Someone should make a "If you think ME2 fried your video card, sign here" thread.
(Would probably be deleted within minutes)

Probably wouldnt do much good, but with a glaring title like that, and with enough people signing they had this happen, it might spur BioWare into some kind of response. I am betting they will not post much, if at all, in a thread of this sort, for the same reasons they would never admit any fault in the game causing these issues. Legal Repercussions.

The automotive industry recalls their products when there is a defect that could affect life or personal property (Theres a major one in the news right now!). Why dont software developers do the same?

They wouldn't delete they would just ignore it. Look at what it took for Toyota to recall their cars. Many corporations seems to believe that they shouldn't be held responsible for the state of their products.

If you want to start the thread I'd gladly sign it. But I'm not quite sure if ME2 was totally responsible for my GPUs demise or if it was a combination of age and stress put on it from ME2. Or simply age. It was three years old.

I didnt have my GPU fried from ME2. Luckily I figured out my issue before that happened, but am still afraid the integrity of my card may be effected in the long run from it getting so hot. So I dont feel it should be me who starts the thread, atleast not rightfully so.

I am interested in see'ing those effected by this getting some official help with their issue though. I think the response to this would be different if it were Xbox's that started dropping like flies.

There really is NO reason anyone should ever have to underclock their card from factory settings (factory OC'd or not) to play a game and keep their card from overheating.

I would start it but I really belive that my card died from old age and ME2 egged it along. I agree if this was a 360 issue EA and Bioware would be swarming around trying to fix it.

slightly different crash issue, but same result. doesn't go black, I get red squiggly artifacts covering my screen but the sound still works. Still freezes though. I found it only crashed in cut scenes in the beginning but now it is crashing more and more often. In combat now as well. everything driver wise is up to date. I find this same type of crash has happened in 2 other games I can think of. Dungeons and Dragons online and Bioshock. Everything else seems to be fine.

2.3 intel duo

2 gigs of ddr3

8800 GT Invidia

Asus MB

This feels like i need a bigger hammer... to hit bioware in the kneecaps with for making a bugged out game

Stop playing ME2 IMMEDIEATLY, artifacting could be a result of severe overheating of your GPU.

I finished the game on first playthrough without any crashes, delays or errors.

Halfway through second playthrough, the game crashed with an error message about a display driver that stopped responding.

Now, after I loaded any game, the screen flickers or goes black a few seconds later, with sound in the background. The current error message is: Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has succesfully recovered.

I monitored internal temperatures, and it doesn't seem as if any components are overheating.

Changing resolution from 16:10 to 16:9, lowering graphics settings to an absolute minimum,

updating drivers or changing settings in Catalyst Control Center has not worked. The video card has never been clocked.

Specs:

2,83 Intel Duo

Vista 64-bit

4 GB ram

ATI Radeon HD 4870

From what I can make of the other posts, it seems that ME2 does not like certain nVidia or ATI Radeon cards. Are there any solutions or updates?

There haven't really been any workable solutions. And bioware has been silent. There are supposed to be some ATI drivers coming out at some future point in time but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I dont know how much drivers are going to help with this. I got through the game still using the 9.12 ATI drivers.

Underclocking GPU's works for some

Using a fan to blow air into or suck air out of your PC case works for others.

Removing RAM has worked for others as well. (I dont believe this to have been the real issue)

For anyone who has had the frequency of the issue increase, STOP PLAYING ME2. You are going to permenantly damage your GPU from repeatedly trying to play and crashing.

Well, I got Kim Stolz of Bioware to say he will look into this and send it someone's attention. social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/810431/3

That's great news! Big thanks to you ... so far, lol.
So I didn't touch ME2 for over a week now, it was hard at first, but better safe than sorry.

Btw: Been playing games like Modern Warfare 2, Tropico 3 etc., all stuff that really gets my PC sweating. Guess what:
Not a single crash, temperatures are cool and nice, PC works like a charm.

Your welcome, I felt like I had to do something.

I know, same with me all the other PC games no problem, its not temperature related.

In my case, accessing the Nvidia control panel and under "3D settings", where the Nvidia logo appears spinning, I pulled the slider all the way to "performance" instead of "quality".

The result is that GPU-Z now tells me that my max temperature never went over 73ºC (it went past 100ºC earlier) and the crashes haven't appeared yet (maximum I played straight was 4h).

I had a problem where I was about 10 hours into the game and it would start to crash after playing for only 5 minutes. It was really frustrating. I tried lowering my graphics settings, window, update video and sound drivers, to no avail. I then backed up my save games and reinstalled. Now everything is working good again. *shrugs*

I've had unbelievable frustration with mid-battle crashes. Most are related to my Sentinel shield I think (duo core, radeon 3400 series).

Do you want to know how fun it is to be in the final battle (or any of the unnecessary overlong battles, hello, playtesting? ), that has already take me15minutes (on Insanity) to have a winning battle disappear with a no-warning ctd.

Trying again setting everything at lowest (and why does it mean the intro screen is blurry beyond recognition?)

Sigh...

Leave FPS to Valve, kthx

No.

... What would/should that do? :/ (bought off steam, which was wholly unhelpful as you never see the preload screen, and the root directory is then hidden, and on top of that, you can't uninstall it using the loader screen -_-)

HOw do I reinstall without having to re-download :/ (just to see the 5mins at the end which keeps crashing).

thx

PS i should mention i never had this problem with ME1, playing same char  through all three high difficulty levels etcetc

Having the same problem here guys. The screen goes black during gameplay and I have to reset the PC by holding the power button.
Using a Vaio laptop FW-550 F/B
- Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53 Ghz
- Mobility Radeon HD 4650
- 4 GB RAM
- W7 x64

At first, like everyone, I suspected overheating. It's summer where I live, and my desk is next to a window. But after running a GPU-Z test, I saw that GPU temps never went above 70C. So I lowered the settings, with no difference. I can play Crysis and Far Cry 2 at high settings just fine, and they are much more demanding than ME.
Something I noticed, crashes became much more frequent during the Noveria mission. The music keeps playing for a bit and then it's replaced by a loud buzzing.

I'm gonna throw this game out the window and play Minesweeper.

Same problem here. The game freezes random, but i still hear the music. There is no overheating issue, the latest drivers are installed.

Speccs:

Core i7 920 Scythe Mugen 2 (idle 30 load 60)

4870x2 with Arctic Cooling Extreme (Idle 40c load 60)

Catalyst 10.1 Hotfix

MSI X58 Platinum

I haven't any problems with ME1, but now i really gettin frustrated.

Same problem here.  I barely get five minutes to play before a crash, any place, anywhere.

I have the following (all new):
  • EVGA x58 760 SLI classified motherboard
  • Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Quad core with HyperThreading, 3.2GHz
  • Two EVGA GeForce 285 1Gig in SLI configuration
  • 12Gigs of OCZ DDR3-2000 RAM
  • 2 Patriot 32Gig SSD's in RAID 0 for Windows Boot drive
  • 3 Maxtor 1Terabyte HDD's in RAID 5 for software and data.
  • SATA Blu-Ray burner
  • 1000W Corsair Power Supply
  • DAS Keyboard
  • Logitech Wireless Laser Mouse
  • Benq 1920x1200 LCD monitor as Display 1
  • Samsung 1600x1200 LCD monitor as Display 2
  • Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (legit)
All run at stock settings, no overclocking.  I spent a lot of money on this system and am not going to screw it up by overclocking.

No problems at all, even with ME1.  HOWEVER, ME2 crashes and crashes and crashes no matter what the video settings.  The case is a veritable tornado of air circulation with large fans and a very large CPU heatsink and fan.  The room is cool.  Up to date drivers for all devices.  The problem here is the game.  For such things to be happening, the obvious culprit looks to be poor QA and a need to rush it out the door.  Being a programmer myself, I'd be embarrassed to release code in such an unstable condition.  This game was not ready.  This attitude of "release it and we'll patch it later" has got to stop with all software companies.  Believe me, I know it happens.  I also know unknown issues can sneak through undetected, but man this one was just too obvious for such an excuse to be believed.

I am a bit peaved, but would be willing to assist in diagnosis.  Perhaps some day I'll actually be able to play the game.

I've been experiencing total computer freezes (the computer locks up, sound loops itself forever, keyboard and mouse don't respond to input) while playing ME1, but strangely, it doesn't always happen. However, these problems only started after I installed ME2 (which I haven't started yet, as I want to get my ME1 playthroughs squared away before I start ME2), which leads me to believe that something that was installed with ME2 is the source of the conflicts.

To all the people who've been having similar crashes; did you install the DirectX upgrade that came with ME2? My suspicion is that there's something with THAT installation of DirectX that's causing the GPU to malfunction, and possibly overheat, based on people's stories. And because DirectX can't be uninstalled once it's on your machine, all other kinds of upgrades like installing new drivers for your video card won't fix the problem; the problem is with DirectX, not your video card.

Last night I installed the latest version of the DirectX End User Runtime (dated 5th Feb), and did a complete driver clean and re-installation. I'll continue monitoring my computer's performance and let you know what the results are.
