*sigh* still no response from bioware? Probably we need to bump this topic every hour or so

Got the same problem, updated my ATI driver to catalyst 10.1, and lowering ther resolution seem able to prolong playing the game around 2 hours before it freezes.

I got Kim from bioware to agree to look into it. All we can do is wait and pray to our favorite god or gods.

I've been having the same problem in ME1, with the freezing, then screen blacking out, and being able to alt-tab, but only if I'm fast enough.
Win7 x64, AMD X2 245, Radeon HD 3870 x2, 4gig ram
I downloaded rivatuner to track my temps, and things go badly with ME1 when the temp spikes, though it's not gone higher than 60C. I underclocked the video card slightly and that helped tremendously, at least compared to it freezing at the same spot every single time. It still froze after about 30 minutes, but if I can keep quick-saving, I might actually get my first playthrough done.
Most probably faulty hardware.
I've got this laptop and the components (CPU, videocard, motherboard) work fine on 90-100C.
If I had a problem with any other game, I'd be inclined to agree. It just seems odd that I can run anything else and not have an issue.
How many of the games that work are based on Unreal Engine? Just interested in some statistics. I remember I had UT3 crashing for me some time ago, but the rest of the games still worked fine. I RMA'd the videocard, but it turned out to be a driver issue...
UE uses some sophisticated algorithms to maintain a playable framerate, which in turn means the resources of the computer are used... well... as randomly and inconsistently (from the driver's perspective) as it can get, and thus, digging up all possible bugs.

In between I updated my Nvidia driver, at first it seems all ok, but only for half a day, then the problems returned. Now I'm really upset with this and I cannot understand that a problem like this that happens to such many users didn't ever happen in beta-test oder for the bioware tech people.

I would suggest this only for cards before the 9xxx series.

I have a new 4890 so I dont know that its an "old card" issue. For those not having problems, i'm willing to bet you'll find more and more higher end cards eventually having problems. It seems to wear down the gpu. By lowering settings, underclocking, etc it's not really solving the problem and may only do so temporarily. Thats my guess considering the vast wide selection of cards being used and the variability on when it begins to occur. Once it starts occuring though, it doesnt stop.
I havent played since posting here originally and probably wont until a patch is released or bioware addresses it. I wont test my own card at my own risk. That's what we pay bioware for their games for.

Sometimes it will freeze to a black screen 10 seconds after getting into the game, and sometimes I can play for an hour before it appears. When the black screen appears, sound might keep playing for 10 seconds, and afterwords my whole computer will freeze; Manual shutdown is the only way to get out of this situation. I just bought this game today and I really enjoyed the first one, and this major crashing issue is hampering my enjoyment. Joinin' the club sadly.
Specs for reference: Radeon HD 4890, Phenom II x4 940 3.0ghz, 4gb DDR2 Ram, 1920x1080.

I will start a new Shepard soon - I'm curious if it will run smoothly for a while again.
Edit for specs: Win7 64bit - 6 GB DDR2 Ram - GForce 7900GTO (no overheating), Intel Core2Duo.

It seems I've solved my problem. I started windows with the kernel debugger turned on and I played the game for 6 hours without a single crash. Time to keep ruining my life with videogames!!:D:D

Also, try renaming MassEffect2.exe to UT3.exe, as it might trigger the drivers to use some compatibility mode. (I've read that renaming it actually helped some at these forums, just saying in case you missed it)
P.S.
As for my driver number, it apears to be laptop-only, and I do have a laptop.

I'm gonna throw this game out the window and play Minesweeper.
Update time...I upgraded my power supply to a Corsair 650w PSU (old one was a generic 400w), and that didn't solve anything, thought maybe it was a voltage issue from a dying PSU. After continuing to experience display driver crashes with my old games, and even during less instensive activities like playing a video or surfing the net, I decided it was probably my 8800GT that was partially fried. Figured I'd get away from NVIDIA and go with an XFX Radeon HD 4890...from all the reviews, seemed like a very good card at an affordable price. Turns out I needed the new PSU to power this thing anyway, takes 2 6-pin PCI-e power connections and a recommended 500w PSU. Anyway, I installed it the other night and haven't experienced any crashes whatsoever, from either old games or ME2, which I've been playing about 3 hours now with every setting maxed out, smooth as can be.
I still find it rather coincidental that my graphic issues began after playing ME2 for a couple hours...maybe my card was dying and ME2 just pushed it over the edge, who knows. But so far so good with the new setup.

Of course I just read about the problems you had, but I don't think it was necessarily dying. Or, well, regarding the issues were overtaking to other parts than just the game, maybe it was. So, as you said: who knows.
But I've also got a 8800GT, which runs perfectly fine with everything but ME 2. It's really not dying at all. Having read many posts, it seems the crashes occur to a significant number of people with exactly this card.
Plus, my CPU is a Q6600. Which also appears very often.
This combination seems to be fatal with ME2, somehow.

Nothing has been changed on my rig within the last 2 weeks, except for installing ME2.
My specs are:
AMD Phenom 9850 Quad 2.5 GHz Black edition (not overclocked)
4 gigs ram
NVidia GeForce GTX 280 (not overclocked)
Vista 64bit
Drivers are up-to-date and so far I've never had any problems like that with any other kind of game...
