Yeah I have the 10.2xxxxx drivers as of February 16th or so. That got it running much better. Fixing to update patch and see if it helps, even indirectly at all.

Okay so the patch didnt help. Still freezing, tried window mode this time too, no luck. It not only freezes the game, but the whole screen goes black. Sound is continually playing though, and not stopping.

I have a very weird problem regarding ME2. I have Nvidia 8800M GTX and you know, never had problems with playing any games on max. settings etc. And well, my settings in ME2 are also high. My problem is that although the game runs like a charm, as soon as I quit the game my computer crashes - you know, mouse stops working, can't ctrl+alt+del or anything else. After I reboot my PC windows 7 is stuck on the booting screen - after several more reboots Windows actually loads, I can see the desktop etc but it soon crashes again.
The only solution I've found is that after I quit ME2 and my computer crashes, I just have keep it turned off for a bit and then it boots normally again.
Since I have to keep it off for a bit and then it's ok, the only thing that comes to my mind is that maybe something overheats or so, but I fail to understand why does my computer crash AFTER I quit the game, rather than in the middle of playing - if the issue indeed was overheating.

Oh, and yeah, I also lose my achievements next time I play the game, as well as some settings (e.g. I'm not an English native speaker so I rather have subtitles on - but ocassionally I have to turn them on again for some strange reason).

Update: As soon as I start the game Kaspersky says that he found a threat: PDM.Keylogger in kernel mode memory patch, application: Mass Effect 2, which is most likely BS (I've read that it's a common problem in Kaspersky) but I don't know, maybe it has something to do with my problem?

im about to return this game, ive tried off and on to play this and have rebooted my computer maybe 100 times due to black screening. tried everything, 10.2 ati, game patch, updated directx, minimum settings nothing seems to work..... would be nice if someone from bioware at least dropped by this thread and said we are looking into it....

Does it annoy anyone else that they addressed the single core issue (not just commented on but patched) and haven't talked about this? single core is below min spec and most people here seem well above min spec!

ok I have waited until now to buy ME2, hoping that any major issues will be fixed by now. It seems i was wrong. I have the same issue described here by many people. game crashes to black screen every few minutes. the GPU seems to be working really hard, but i had no issues with any other games so far. Lowering the temperature in the whole room to below 15 degrees and opening the case seems to extend the play time to 10 - 15 min. I have Ati x3870x2. I have not been able to download the hotfix from ati or 10.2 CCC because i have no broadband connection so that would take ages. I did download the patch for ME2 ( several hours download time lol). No help there. Might try to go to one of my friends and download the fix and CCC 10.2, but from the posts here it doesn't seem to help much. Im not going to underclock my GPU just for one game or rip out some RAM. I think i will wait for a few weeks and see if the issue gets adressed. Personally i think i have the heat issue, because if i anticipate the crash and save/exit the game after 5-8 min the PC works fine and gradually cools down, no errors.

From what i can tell it was a driver problem (for me at least), i just used Driver Sweeper to clean out my nvidia drivers and i installed the Nvidia Omega Driver which solved the issues i was having (frequent crashing/lock-ups/BSOD), now the game runs fine without so much as a "hiccup", BUT since the Omega driver is based on the earlier 169.25 version of Forceware it doesn't have the "Maximum Pre-rendered Frames" option which makes my game choppy at times (example in the conference room on the Normandy during after-mission cutscenes) other than that i was able to run it almost all day today (8 hours i think) without any kind of crash.

If you ran out of ideas and patience you could try the Omega drivers available for Nvidia as well as Ati Radeon.

Hopefully it's a driver issue and not a game one.

Cheers!

After few hours i managed to download ATI 10.2 driver update. Zero effect, game still crashes after 5 min. Ill have to leave this game few weeks/months alone. Oh well, i guess i can always replay dragon age one more time.

Torham: perhaps try omega drivers too? I think they were mostly creating ATI drivers before they moved to supporting nvidia - who knows maybe it'd help, I'd give it a shot.

Been having the same problems since launch, happens usually during combat, but has happened during dialogue and exploration too.

Phenom 2 955

8gb ddr3 1600 ram (removed half, still crashed)

2x HD 4890 (removed one, still crashes)

Win 7 x64

I've updated the gpu drivers to 10.2, updated mobo chipset drivers, updated directx, ran memory diagnostics, stress tests, tried running it on lowest graphics settings 0xmsaa, 0xaf.

When i load the game, i can barely turn my character 90 degrees before it crashes.

I've seen every colour crash screen imaginable, bright green, light blue, light blue with white lines, pink, black ,red with white lines, even pink ****ing elephants.

Gonna add my two cents to this discussion:

Intel i7 920, stock clocks.
12GB OCZ DDR3-1600 (6x2GB), underclocked to DDR3-1066.
XFX Radeon 4890 1GB, stock clocks.
Vista Ultimate x64 SP2.

I've narrowed down my lockup problems to any game built in Unreal Engine 3. That is, I have the same lockup problem in Mass Effect 1/2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Global Agenda. I've been trying various fixes with varying results but the best success I've had so far was disabling ATI PowerPlay via a fix for similar problems (freezing/black screen) on newer ATI video cards. Again, varying results: by forcing the idle, 2D and 3D clocks to 850 and the idle, 2D and 3D voltages to 1.313v, I was able to play the game for about half a day before it froze.

The thing about the freezes is that they are not total system lockups UNTIL I attempt to alt-tab/ctrl-alt-del into Windows. The way I can tell: caps lock is a function of the BIOS, so when the system first locks up, if I press caps lock, the keyboard's capslock LED will light up. The system is still technically responsive, but if I attempt to force myself back into Windows, that's when the system as a whole locks up - caps lock no longer responds and the only way out is a hard reset.

Again, ME1/2 are not the only games I have this problem with, it's any game built in UE3.

I tried bumping up the core voltage further and saw no improvement at 1.35v, and texture corruption at 1.38v, so it's back to 1.313v. Next approach will be underclocking the core and/or memory.

Bookmarking this thread for later reference/discussion.

Anyone having this problem, underclock both gpu and memory by 50 MHz. Solved the problem for me, and I didn't lose any performance.

Yeah, I'm running 800/975 right now (stock clocks are 850/975) and if it still gives me grief, memory clock's going down 50 MHz, but no crashes yet.

Same problem. I've been lurking the forums for a while now looking for a solution but nothing has worked.

I played around half-way through the game, and then restarted as I think the default choices are stupid, and then got around half-way through again when I experienced my first crash. The screen freezes for a few seconds, then it goes to a black screen, but the audio stays on briefly, then my monitor says 'No Video Input' or something and then the sound gets frozen, and repeats the same thing over and over again, forcing me to restart. If I try to play the game again, I get less time before it crashes, and if I leave it some time I get a longer time playing the game next time I try to play.

It's not a PC issue, it was built less than a month ago by a very trusted source. Nevermind the fact that this is the only game it happens on.

I've looked around but can't find a way to actually do this, can anyone help me out? I'm really desperate to finish this game, and would try almost anything now - but I don't want to risk breaking my computer.

I have managed to solve the crashes. It seems the game didn't like the Catalyst AI. I have switched off the crossfire on my ATI card and switched off the catalyst AI. The game now runs fine, no crashes, no lockups. I am now 15 hours into the game and haven't experienced a single crash. Its running on only half the card ( i have Radeon x3870x2, integrated onto single GPU).

Smorejack: with ATI its built into the CCC ... look at ATI overdrive (last option in CCC) not sure about nvidia

Smorejack: if you're using a Mobility Radeon you wont find ATI overdrive in ccc because it's been disabled for mobility radeon cards. Use RivaTuner and follow this tutorial

Hi guys

Getting the crash issue as well, as are friends that have the game, but not all of them. But what I have noticed is that the game crashes less frequently as I lower my screen resolution. At native resolution, I kept crashing at the EXACT same point at the Intro - ie when i go through the door to goto joker in the cockpit...only avoided crashing when i lowered resolution a notch, but game crashed frequently afterwards. So continued to lower resolution. Still crashes but nowhere near as frequently.

Unfortunately, the game looks NOWHERE near as good at the lower resolution.

Power not an issue as I have a brand new rig and have played several games without a single issue.

First time Bioware have let me down with a game in terms of reliability, but I'll keep the faith and hope they notice this thread and realise they have a problem...and develop a patch if it can be resolved.

Setup (not overclocked)

Mobo: Striker II Extreme

CPU: Intell (E8500) Core Duo 3.16 Ghz 1330 Mhz

GFX: ATI ASUS 4870 HD x2

Memory: Corsair 4Gb DDR3 1600 Mhz

Case: Cosmos Cooler master with a 850 w PSU

Im running with ATI HD 4870x2 and for me i get the crashes around every 15-20 min. It starts out with some of the textures getting streched out over the screen. f.ex. the chin of shepperd goes into a long spike in X direction. This can go on for 1 min, then the gfx card crashes.

I can log out the game at that point and restart, so it dosnt go into total black crash mode asap.

Maybe some lighting feature that i can try to disable?

Problems are back for me. I am convinced this is some type of ATI Radeon driver issue with the Unreal engine games. Other games are no issue for me. Come on ATI!

Hmm, are other unreal games acting up for you?

Mass Effect 1 is.  I am working with a new build.  No problems with anything other than these two games so far.  I have played Halo, Star Wars Force Unleashed Sith Edition, and Fallout 3 (small amount of time just to finish) with no problems.  My system specs for your reference:

Intel i7 920 (stock)
Asus P6T motherboard
Corsair 6Gb (CM3X2G1600C8) currently running at 1069MHz
Radeon HD5770 1GB from Sapphire, Catalyst 10.2 Driver
Windows 7 -64bit

Maybe I should start a poll to try to define this problem better.  Very frustrated right now I can't play more than 15-30minutes of time without a crash.  It usually happens in a non-graphics intense moment-- in a menu or scanning for elements.  I know it is not an overheat issue. My PC is clean and wide open.  Temperature is never a problem.
