I have plenty of power too. Running a Corsair 750 PSU. Zulu21, do you think it is related to the unreal engine with just the Radeon cards? I have a support issue open with Sapphiretech.com and I am awaiting some kind of feedback. I am so fed up that I am just about ready to go back to the Green team (I loved my GeForce 6800GS)!

A poll to try and find out what graphics cards are having a problem with this game (frequent black/grey vertical line crashes and hangs)...

Ok, I've been playing for a couple of hours and no crash... I've followed a few Terminus Pi steps and it seem to be working. In my case:

I haven't realy disabled Asus Aitwek (overclock) becouse it has no off option so, I tried to manually input the numbers following most of the factory specs for my CPU and GPU chips.

Then, I've disabled ATI Catalyst Overdrive and had to set my GPU fan speed to 80%, keeping the GPU under 60ºC (Since the avarage day here in Brazil is 34ºC!!!)

Still in Catalyst Control, I've manually set all the 3D options half way up, only, and tried to keep the game settings under that configuration (e.g. A-Filtering x4 in Catalyst Control, since my max is x8 and set x2 in the game config tool).

After 3 days tests, I came to a Conclusion that this is the same kind of crashing some people (like me) were experiencing with Storm of Zehir, the NWN2 expansion... all the symptoms lead to that.

You could try looking at our discussion over here: http://social.biowar...56735/2#1703784

Let's wait for a Bioware position on this!!! Bioware???

I have now applied a hotfix for Mass Effect 2 (Hotfix to force Anti-Aliasing support for ATI Radeon™ HD series of graphic cards when in Crossfire Mode for Mass Effect 2) and disabled Catalyst AI. For those interested, here is the website for the hotfix...

http://support.amd.c...-Crossfire.aspx

Fingers crossed... I played the game for 4 hours without a crash. I hope I haven't just jinxed myself!

Update: Looks like dropping the anti-alisaing down to 8 and turning of dynamic shadows did the trick. No crashes at all despite heaps of gameplay. Was even able to go back into native resolution with these settings.

What I don't understand is why these things were causing crashing in the first place...shouldn't they be just causing lower FPS? I have a new system, but with my older system, if the card wasnt able to handle higher settings all that happened was a slower framerate...no crashes.

Anyway, the lower settings resolved the issue so Im happy again!Image IPB

It seem that Bioware games have something that causes random sudden FPS drops at the same time they make the CPUs and GPU work at maximum capacity for no explicit reason.

You see, I´ve had the same problem with NWN2: Storm of Zehir and I couldn't believe that NWN2 would be heating up my PC, but it did. Now, Mass Effect 2 did the same thing and I don't know if it is really the same problem but the PC crashes just like it did with NWN2.

After all the steps I've posted above, it stoped crashing, still, I'm not convinced that I really solved the problem. The only thing I really did is making my PC run smoothly so whe ME2 push it to the edge for no known reason, it doesn't crash right away. The game is still buggy...

FINALLY FIXED MY PROBLEM!!! This game does put a lot of strain on your video card, which just revealed my Sapphire Radeon 5770HD card problem. I like many others just got a defective card. Just got it back from Sapphires RMA process and been playing the game for two days with no problem. RMA your cards!!!

I really hate to jump into this forum, but I am really new. I just bought Mass Effect 2 and my PC definatly meets specs. I have downloaded a patch, went into the bios and changed to two processors and restarted. The problem I am having is I cannot even get ME2 to even start. It immediatly crashes. I think in this forum I was reading about changing mov files etc... I am going to try that but if anyone could help I would appreciate it I really wanna get into this game!

I'm new here and have spent almost 2 hours looking through these threads in order to find a solution for ME2 either crashing or more commonly causing my screen to go all pixelated/fuzzy. I use an nvidia 9500 GT, my drivers are all upto date, and I only recently purchased said graphics card and even more recently re-installed windows vista. No game is worth all the hassle that ME2 has given both me and others who have experienced similar or worse problems, no matter how awesome it is. Its a shame too, cause what little I was able to play of it looked brilliant. I am really quite gutted.

Why would you take the time to shop for a video card and not get one suitable for the current crop of games?

That is a three year old design, being essentially just a renamed 8600, and you could have bought a one year old HD 4670 for less money (stateside, anyway).  If you are a dedicated green team player, determined to use Geforces, even when they are trailing behind, you should have gotten a 9600 GT or a  GT 240.

You will note that I've not claimed the 9500 is the reason that ME-2 is giving you a lot of trouble, only that IMO, you would have less difficulty with a more-decent video card.

I don't think this is a ME2 or Bioware problem. I have an 8800GT on Win 7 64 bit now, but with the same card I was having this problem with 32 bit Vista as well. It started doing this in Tranquility Lane in Fallout3. Cannot get past it - end of game. Then COD4 (that stopped though). Then Oblivion outdoor scenes. Now for the past 3 tries, ME2. I have a 650W BFG power supply in the machine but the signal integrity over the so-called dual 12V rails only provides 18-24v constantly under load and the 8800 requires either 26v or 28v. I think this may be the problem but I don't want to go buying some 1000W Silverstone unit that puts out 36v only to find out the card is garbage. I paid over $150 for the power supply I have.

Le Sigh. :crying:

I'm late to the party, but I've finally gotten around to playing (and finishing) Mass Effect, and was now looking forward to playing Mass Effect 2. But lo an behold; I can't, because it causes my machine to freeze and lock up completely, leaving me with the last frame stuck on the screen and .. chirpy distorted sounds coming from the speakers.I've tried playing four times, and only managed to manually exit the game once. The first time this happened as Shepard was drifting in space after the destruction of the Normandy; disturbing, but also an ironically appropriate time for a critical system failure. The subsequent two failures happened at Lazarus Station and Freedom's Progress base; the only common element is that none of them happened during fight scenes.

As for what I have done to fix the problem? I've installed the patch and updated my graphics drivers (after the second, but before the third and final crash). I've also read through this thread and reduced the video settings, but haven't tried playing again. Frankly, I'm not too keen on trying; I don't like having the computer fail on me, and this makes me quite upset. It's one thing to have a game that's more than the card can handle, but it's quite another for it to overload it to such calamitous effect... :/

My system settings are:
Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz
4 GB RAM
nVidia 8800GT 512MB

A typical setup for people in my unfortunate situation, in other words.
Le sigh indeed... :(

Wow, read though all of this thread and there's a lot to try.

Like everyone I'm having the same problem: Can play for random amount of time, then black screen, sound keeps playing for a few seconds then it stutters and the full thing locks up. My specs are:

XP Pro SP3

Athlon 64 7750+ dual core (2.7gig)

4 Gig Ram

HD 4850 512Mb (XFX brand)

On board sound.

The thing is, as other people have pointed out, I seem to have this problem on other games that use the Unreal 3 Engine. The Last Remnant is especially bad and I had issues with the original Mass Effect as well, although I managed to complete that.

Now if it was just random crashes, I would probably suck it up and move on, but there were some areas where the crash could be replicated. One was the Mass Effect core on the Derelict Reaper, which I got past by standing as far away from the damn thing as I could, the other place, which it's now happened 3 times in a row, is leaving the Geth ship. It's a shame because I'm really getting into it but I'm worried that I'm going to damage my card.

As others have said, I've not had any other problems with any other games. I can run the likes of Dragon Age and Left 4 Dead 2 at full settings no problem. I've also used Furmark to stress test my card and had no issues even though it made the card hotter than any game I've played, and even then it was barely hitting 80 celcius.

Ah well. I'm worried that it may be damaging my card, so I'm not going to try one of the suggested solutions at a time, I'm going to throw them all at it at once and hope it works. It only needs to make Mass Effect 2 work, after that everything can go back to normal.

A quick update: I tried underclocking the Graphics memory (for some reason ATi overdrive doesn't let me downgrade the GPU Clock), I reduced some of the graphical settings and I tried setting the affinity to one core, but that made the game really choppy, so I set it back to 2.

Black screen crash at the exact same spot. I'm getting annoyed now. There is nothing wrong with my system, why is it doing this?

Update: I tried turning the resolution down to 1440x900 and disabling bloom, anisotropic filtering and dynamic lighting. No dice. I still only managed to play for less than ten minutes before it all froze up again. It seems I'll just have to resign myself to not being able to see the game through... :(

Are any of the people who originally posted here still around? I'm just wondering, could it be a sound issue?

An interesting thing to note, when I was trying out things with The Last Remnant (another game that shares this problem), one of the things I tried doing was disabling the Azalia Codec in the Bios.

Before I go any further though I should explain something. For some reason as well as the VIA HD audio which I use, my computer also has an ATi HD audio driver and a NVIDIA HD driver. I disabled both of them, because I assume they are if I wanted sound through speakers attached to the HDMI sockets that are on both the ATi card that I use and on board GeForce GPU (which is disabled, or SHOULD be disabled... damn Asus BIOS is not helpful at all).

Anyway, back on track, with both of those HD drivers disabled, I could play The Last Remnant up until I completed a battle, then the game would crash to the desktop without fail. With them both enabled and Azalia disabled, I could get past the battles but still suffer from the same black screen issue.

As far as I'm aware however, all the drivers are up to date. As for the ATi and NVIDIA HD, I can only disable them. If I uninstall them Windows just reinstals them using basic drivers when I restart.

Update: I found a tip advising me to go to the task manager after the game has started and set the core affinity of the Mass Effect 2 process to use only core 0. I did so, and have since been able to play 2 ca 1 hour sessions with no crashes. I have turned Bloom, Motion Blur and anisitropic filtering back on, though I am still running in windowed mode and 1440x900. A promising result, nonetheless.

The flipside is, even if this is the solution to the issue, it is not a _good_ solution, since a) it's tampering with the windows setting to make the program work properly and B) it's something I have to do every time I want to the play, as the program (or the task manager) doesn't seem able to remember the core affinity override.

An official response on the issue, and a patch to fix it is still requested and will be appreciated.

Final (?) update: I haven't experienced any more crashes. Important amendment to my previous report; I had also, for unrelated reasons, uninstalled AVG Free and installed Microsoft Security Essentials instead. The internet claims that crashes has been associated with AVG, so it is possible that that was the root of my problem all along.

Also; the game, once I managed to get it going, is amazing! Yay!

Short version:

Underclocking the GPU apparently fixed it for me.

Long version:

I got ME and ME2 from Direct2Drive a couple of weeks ago and last week I started with ME. BSOD crashes with looped sound would occur after 15 to 60 minutes of playing. I thought it's ME related, so switched to ME2, only to get the same crashes after even shorter playing times.

I tried most of the tips listed in this thread, and the one thing that worked to me was to underclock my GPU. I set the core clock to 500 from 550 stock setting and the memory clock to 1500 from 1700 stock setting. Smooth playing ever since :-) I used MSI afterburner to do the tweaks - the software seems light and the interface is quite intuitive.

PC specs:

XP Pro SP3

Athlon 64 X2 5400+

2 Gig Ram

GT 240 512MB

On board sound

All video/sound drivers up-to-date

Good luck to those still struggling! Sure is a shame that those great games cause so much frustration to people who wanna enjoy them!

I got black screen after starting new DLC, never had any problems before. I start chat with Liara, tell her about Shadow Broker and got black screen. I hear in game sounds of her office but nothing more is happening. Video drivers up-to-date.

I have the same exact problem!
Game crashes at a random time, screen goes blank, have to hard restart.
Seems to me that Bio-ware needs to fire those sloppy programmers and hire some people with brains. Also, it pisses me off that Bio-ware hasn't addressed this issue yet. And its been like 8 months......

Rarrrrrggghh!!!!!

Fear not, it's not an angry lion - it's the noise I make when ME and ME2 blackscreen randomly and frequently!

I have an ATI HD 4600 series GPU on a Phenom quad core system but the fact that it happens on good Nvidia cards as well has put me off 'changing teams' as it were. I have tried driver updates, Windows updates (XP Home 32), game patches, RAM diags and even system wipes! The problem persists on both Steam and hard copy versions though.

Sixteen pages of this thread later it's about time Bioware stepped up to the plate...

Knights of the Old Republic 2 was a cluster f**k programming wise and Neverwinter Nights 2 has a reputation as one of the buggiest games ever in the history of gaming! Bioware have a history of totally awesome game design crippled by sloppy programming. Issues like this have dealt such a blow to the PC gaming market; if ME2 were already out on PS3 I'd whip it up in a shot.

I finally paid attention to the repeated advice of IFREAKINGLUVME earlier in this thread. I went into ATI ccc, checked 'Enable ATI Overdrive' and reduced the values for 'HighPerformance GPU clock settings' and 'High Performance Memory clock settings' by 50Mhz. For added security I checked 'Enable Manual Fan Control' and set fan speed to 70% then I disabled Catalyst A.I.

THIS SOLUTION WORKS!!!

I've been playing ME2 all day without a single crash! Cheers FREAKING, geat advice!!!
(If you have an ATI mobile or Nvidia GPU without this kind of option Google Rivatuner, a free programme which will help)

I believe the crash with bars on the screen may have a different cause though and is in some way related to the infamous ati3duag and ati2dvag .dll system failures. I used to get this on all manner of games and found that the installation drivers that came with my ATI GPU were at fault. They installed some freaky masked sub-routine on my system which prevented the core .dll drivers from being deleted or replaced. Old drivers which refuse to upgrade cause system conflicts and a whole day picking through my system registry with several methods still did not purge the crazy anti-upgrade routine.

In the end I performed a full system wipe, reinstalled Windows, binned the ATI installation disc and installed the very latest drivers from ATI's web site right from the get go - it worked!

Anyway, good luck guys and gals x
