Also bear in mind that even if you card is running properly and your CPU fans are spinning nicely and heatsinks clean and shinny new, you could still just be recirculating hot air around the inside of your case if it naturally has poor ventilation. Or if case fans haven't been installed incorrectly ie: both fans sucking or both fan blowing. Or just not enough RPMs.

Just wanted to note that.

It's better than nothing, and i - for one - appreciate the help! It's definitely a great starting point, at least, whereas before we were just shooting in the dark.

Anyway, i'm not getting that EXACT error (xxx.dll blah blah), but it IS the error i used to get in the Long Ago before i had my computer serviced and replaced the video card, and while i haven't had an issue since, this problem is reminiscent of it. So, that's kind of my leap. Still, who knows. I just want to solve it!

Still, counting down the minutes and crossing my digits.

Pfft ATI released new drivers today with their "Known Issue" that there is a grey screen issue. Still no fix from them, thats 3 driver releases from them with no fix.

And there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth!

Well, i still hold out hope that we'll get some kind of official response soon, whether it's telling us there's a solution, one is being worked on, or that we're screwed. Just like to know for a certainty!

I've had similar errors, but one thing I noticed is that I'll get black bars around the subtitle text. I've learned now that if I get the black bars, then I should quit the game immediately. I have had no crashing issues in ME1. It could be that my card is overheating...the temperature seems to be pretty high (it was about 75 degrees Celsius while playing, with the case open). Here's my system info:

when mine crashes it resembles that of a GPU overheating with the graphical corruption and what not, but i alt-tab and i dont think ive seen my GPU above 90 C and i have a 9800 GX2 and i live in Texas so playing at a constant 100 C is normal for me. i dont really see that as overheating but i have a feeling my newly installed windows 7 does.

actually now after watching the temp really closely it is hitting like 105 C in outside combat situations and the temperature goes up and down very rapidly, so after opening up my case and putting a huge fan beside it im actually able to play the game without those crashes now. So i hope that helps some of u guys, good luck.

Alright, I changed two things at once, so I'm not sure which one broke the camels back and made it work, but here's what I did. The first thing was turning down a few of the graphics, motion blur for sure, but I don't remember the other setting. One of the shadow settings. The second thing I did was use WinThrottle to cap my CPU usage at ~50%. Those two things together stopped my CPU from overheating, and made everything work gloriously. I wish I knew WHY I had to do that, but I won't sweat it too much.

I hope that helps some of you. Cheers.

PS - My steam overlay is also disabled, but I don't know if that matters.

The random black screen hard lockup happens to me only in Mass Effect 1 and 2 (ME1 from Steam, ME2 retail).  All other games are fine (L4D2, Crysis, MW2, and a bunch of older stuff).  I have all Vista updates installed, latest Nvidia drivers, latest game patches, and no background stuff (no Steam, no Fraps, no antivirus).

It is definitely not a heat issue.  My fans are on full, my room is cold, and again, even more intense games don't cause a complete system lockup.

No permissions issues.  Registry utilities report no problems.
Same specs as most people on here:
Quad Core Intel Xeon @ 2.66Ghz
8800 GT 512 MB
4 GB RAM
Vista Business x64 SP2
DirectX version 11

2 monitors @ 1680 x 1050 and I play fullscreen

Some other crap from dxdiag if it makes a difference:

yeah it is weird, cause crysis would run at constant like 105 C but never lock up. But the weirder thing is that i still have Vista installed and i played Mass effect 2 on that to and it still locked up, so its gotta be some safety thing in the game. But i actually brought my card down a whole 10 C sitting on the desktop so mass effect hasnt crashed for me since.

I also have some technical issues, but the problems started after about 5 hours playtime.
Now I'm able to play about 5 minutes, then the first few times my pc crashed competely, the graphics became colourful and it restarted automatically. Sometimes a blue screen appeared before it starts to reboot.
Well, I've updated my graphic drivers (8800gt, latest driver) and now the game freezes, again after about 5 minutes, for a few seconds. After that it runs normal for a few secs and then it freezes again. Sometimes a few graphic errors appears, just like overheat graphic errors, but all temperatures are normal.
One time, I was able to tab out of the game and I noticed an error on the right bottom. It was like "NVIDIA kernel mode driver doesn't react" or something like that.

All my other games are working, so I don't think that my graphiccard has a defect :/
Maybe somebody is able to help me :(

EDIT: I reinstalled the game it seems that the game is working now. But all my achievements are gone, all my headshots are resetted. Does anybody know why all my achievements are gone?

I have a similar problem which started once I flew out after talking to the Illusive Man (the first colony). So far, I pretty much get a crash at a certain point, but I've been able to move that point forward somehow, up until killing the armored mech. I have to hard reset every time.

AMD Phenom II X4 940

4gb RAM

XFX Radeon 4850

Vista Home Premium x64

Awaiting a possible fix with kimchi'd breath!

Disabling motion blur didn't work. Still with the same issue. The game seems to be crashing more frequently now.

Ideas in this thread which have not worked:
- Task Manager -> Set Affinity -> CPU 0
- Motion Blur -> Off (just for fun I also turned off High Quality Bloom and Film Grain and still it locked up my whole system)

As I try others I will log them.

Try going into the video settings and turning all the video settings off plus motion blur off i think the problem is that it keeps using way too much of the cpu so keep disabling things until it chills out

turning all the settings off and/or setting them to the lowest possible setting does not solve or help anything one bit.

is it possible that our Video Cards got burned out after playing Mass Effect 2? I'm noticing the same driver crashes is other games now as well.

Unlikely. But there is always a chance that one stressful session can damage a video card so from that point on you would most certainly see a level of degradation in game play experiences.

However it's important to note that the GPU is not the only culprit in the case of display driver crashes. As I've already stated, it just where the fault was tripped.

All I know is that my GPU can't even handle anything beyond video now...

Seeing similar problems here as well. Tried all the known solutions (latest video, sound & motherboard drivers; removed video codec packs, min video settings for the game) to no avail. Seems like the game is doing something that stresses out video cards causing overheat issues, but the crash happens sooner than just an overheat shutdown so there is something intrinsically wrong with how the game is using the video drivers.

Similar to how Neverwinter Nights 2, Mass Effect and now Mass Effect 2 have all started. Shortly after launch a patch will release and NVidia will release drivers along a similar time frame.

Shameful that compatibility testing didn't catch this, but exceptionally difficult to get all system configurations.

FWIW, running an Intel DualCore 2.7Ghz chip and 2 8800 Ultras in SLI.

Well, thought i'd finally check in with my only working solution!

Which is, basically, that i'm keeping my house at it's normal cold temperature, removed the side of my PC case and have a fan blowing colder air on the guts, constantly.

Not surprisingly, this is literally the only solution i've found that works beautifully. I've been able to run an almost full eight hour session today (followed by a shorter three hour block, after a brief shutdown period while i showered) with NO problems whatsoever. Not even a hiccup.

Now, what does that mean? Obviously, it's not the ideal solution (THAT would be having it run perfectly without having to screw around), but if anyone's still having similar problems, it's worth a shot. Just keep any small animals or children away, and patrol for dust.

PS: I'm still not convinced this means it's some random or general overheating problem. As i've (and others in this thread) mentioned, the ONLY time this problem happens is playing ME1+2.
