Technical problem: frequent display crash, black screen.

Besides the usual fixes of going minimalist in the Game Launcher Video tab, disabling the two intro movies by renaming them, and updating my video and audio card drivers...
I went to AMD/Catalyst and updated my MoBo's Southbridge Chipset drivers. I run a 790GX/ SB750 chipset. The driver download for that chipset is HERE. That driver works for both Windows 7 and Vista and it is good for 32- or 64-bit versions.
Again, while I haven't extensively tested to see if this is a complete fix, directly after I updated, it allowed me to play for over an hour when I have never been able to before...

Here is my set-up:
-Win 7 64
-ATI 4870x2 with latest drivers
-Q9550 2.83
-4G DDR3@1333
Basically sometime I am able to play for about an hour before de game crash randomly. Only happended once so far that I was able to play until I got fed up (I was really surprised) Anyway the game is awsome but it sad that we buy a game that is not 100% ready. I will be waiting for the patch

It seems pretty amazing something that is so wide spread is something that BIoware is missing to find. I'm kind of hoping EA/Bioware will work together to help the PC community out, I know they seem to have this great love for 360 but we bought the game on PC and the PC version needs aid :-/
I stated earlier and still belive that if the 360 was having this problem EA and Bioware would be all over it it would probally have been fixed already. I still can't believe that someone from bioware stopped by to say they werent going to fix this.

I've gotten stuck again at the Krogan place and now seriously don't feel like moving on (since I need to finish up this paper).
Perhaps the apparent silence is due to a mix of 360 favouritism and PC variation. If there's a serious bug on an Xbox version... well pretty much everyone has it and all Xbox players are unable to use the game. If there's a serious problem with the PC version... not everyone will be affected, and judging by the fact that none of these reviews seem to point out the game killing bugs, it's probably a very small percentage of players that experience the issues.
And then there's the fact that not all PC's are the same. A patch for PC has to somehow account for all of that variability. I read somewhere on this forum that either ATI or NVidia was working on an updated driver specifically for Mass Effect 2 (not that worthless "Hotfix" being thrown around)... the word "weeks" or "months" was thrown out.
I guess we our lot is to just be patient and keep complaining?
PS: One of the few things I haven't tried is reducing my memory. I believe I have 12GB of RAM... and I really don't feel like physically taking out enough to reduce that to fewer than 3GB like I've read in certain places (especially since my i7 won't be happy with that arrangement). I was wondering if there was a way to limit how much RAM a specific program can be allotted? (I imagine there is, just I'm quite bad at hunting for it on the net)

I've been able to play ME2 just fine without issue until I got to the part where I board a disabled Collector Ship and the game keeps locking up, making odd sounds, screen goes black, and sometimes it comes back and I'm able to play for maybe two or three minutes until it repeats this problem. I haven't been able to get pass this part and the issue continues and out of the five times I've tried playing at this part my PC has rebooted itself or crashed needing to be rebooted. Any thing I could try to fix this?
PC specs:
Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Ultimate Service Pack 2 (6.0.6002)
DirectX 10.0 (Mar2009) or later
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.59 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 4870 1gb of VRAM
6gb of DDR3 RAM
I have a physical copy of the game and its the Collectors' Edition if that matters

Simple their hoping to sweep this under the rug. Bioware has made it clear they dont want to fix this.duskl1ght wrote...
Why hasn't this thread been stickied? Why hasn't bioware given an official response about this?

There is a new Catalyst Version available, 10.1. Try it, maybe then it works.
Installed the new drivers, and same problem happened.

Eh, they made a patch for the first Mass Effect and they'll make one for this one. Whether or not it will fix ALL problems... that remains to be seen, but it will happen (probably a while from now =/ ).

I do hope so!
Thanks! Deus Ex is my absolute favorite game!

That way we can knock out nonfunctional solutions and allow others to test possible avenues that they hadn't tried yet.
On my front...
I have an Intel Core i7, 12GB RAM, Vista 64-bit, dual monitors, and Crossfired ATI Radeon 4890s with Catalyst 10.1 drivers.
I get the game freeze/black screen problem usually during cutscenelike conversations.
What I've tried:
Disable one monitor -> appeared to work, but in the end was not the issue
Disable "AI" under Catalyst -> did not work
Download CCCP (codecs) -> appeared to work and make the game stable... but likely was not the problem (still crashing)
Disable VSync under Catalyst -> did not work
Keep internal GPU temperatures around 50C, general temperature cooling issues -> possible increase of stability, but really did not help much
Lower settings: Cinematic Lights 3 -> 2 | Anisotropic Filtering 8x -> 4x | -> did not help, perhaps further decrease?
Download drivers and ATI Hotfix -> worthless
Lower RAM from 12GB to maybe around 4GB? -> probably not going to attempt unless I can find a way to work it in software rather than physically taking memory sticks out
I may have tried a few other things, if someone mentions something and I've tried it I'll update this post. (then I'll remember) Whatever possible things I've done besides listed... well they obviously have not worked.
The CCCP was the most promising... but since it still crashes likely not the solution.

Wait, doesn't that hotfix only help you if you have more then one ATI GPU?

In my case it's possible that the Hotfix doesn't work because for some reason my Crossfire is not truly devoting two GPUs to one process. (if that's the case then I don't know how to fix it).

Although the Windows RAM Diagnostic Tool told me before, that the stick should be ok, I am not sure if this is really the case. Now I play with 4GB RAM and no crash until I removed one stick. I play now with max. settings.

@andinin - So... is there a way to disable an amount of RAM for a specific program? I have 12GB of it and my computer would NOT be happy if I took out the majority of that.
I do not think that this is possible but I am not an expert. I really do not know if it is a RAM issue or only the Windows Tools does not check the RAM correctly. This is something BioWare has to answer. If you think it is a RAM problem then maybe try to use a different diagnostic tool to check your RAM. A small error on your RAM could cause this problem. I have played DA:O without removing any RAM and had no problems. But for Mass Effect 2 I had to remove one stick.... strange....

I played DA:O with occasional crashes, but nothing every really serious or computer stopping. Diagnostic tool like what?
For the record I have never had problems with RAM before... except for on a different computer related to Gothic 3 (and in that case it was the fault of the game for taking more RAM than the computer had).
@IcedDog -> Have you tried reinstalling the game? Or did this start happening at a specific point in the game? I dunno much about NVidia drivers...
