What does everyone have set for shadows and AO in the in-game options?

 

I ask, because sometimes I see someone post a shot where Sera's hair doesn't look like straw, and I suspect it's down to the AO but I suppose it could be shadows as well.

 

I have a feeling that if you use no AO her hair will look a lot better. Unfortunately, it makes the rest of the game look blah, so it's not worth the sacrifice for one character. SSAO isn't usually very sophisticated. I use HBAO, and apparently there's meant to be negligible difference between it and HBAO full, but that could be what gives her nicer hair I guess. I might experiment, but I don't want to risk too many more fps just for her hair.

I use HBAO Full. All of my in-game options are at max. Not sure what you guys use for textures, but I did notice that some hair textures don't load fully unless you are using Fade-Touched. I noticed this especially with shaved hair. 

 

I don't have any screenshots of Sera, but I think her hair looks decent. I'll pay closer attention next time I play.

Very niice indeed.

I don't have Deluxe package, as usually I can not be convinced to buy any deluxe upgrade unless there is additional in-game content (character or story-wise) 

 

This horse is from a promo campaign, but I am happy with the looks:

Thanks.  It's the only shot I took in Bad Future Thedas that I liked at all.  I'm rollin without any mods or sweetfx or anything except the free cam from Cinematic Tools.  All the colors look washed out to me now.

Okay, I may be flamed for this but... In regards to the amazing detail on that skeleton bowl statue, I think DAI might have benefitted from a first-person view option. There are a LOT of structures and landscapes that have an INCREDIBLE amount of detail poured into them, but due to how far the camera is from the pc and the lack of major cinematic focus a LOT of that fantastic detail gets lost in the background of the excessive fetch questing.

I agree actually.  That is one of the reasons why I play with Cinematic Tools free cam.  I can use that to zoom up to anything, or back way off for a long view.  I use it for screenshots but also just to look around at the details in any given setting.  I do wish that the game had that option for those playing on console but that is one of the reasons I spent too much time and money building my own pc.  Games are my main source of entertainment (well, after books) and I like to be able to customize them to my liking.  It does seem a bit of a shame that so much effort went into the little details and most players cant even see them too well.

Case in point, I saw an open book on a dead red templars desk.  Hmm, I wonder what he was reading?

I've actually been using freecam to screenshot books and papers too ... I keep intending to see if there's any actual symbolism/significance going on with them.

 

@Melissa: Templar is my next playthrough planned ... really looking forward to it if the animations are that great. :)

The combat shots I posted earlier in the thread were with everything in game set to max settings except for the textures and I had those set to ultra.  I turn those down a notch when I am taking alot of combat shots to help to smooth the flow out.  Here is a closeup of her hair when I have my textures at fade touched.  Both the earlier and this shot were shot at 2376x1485 rendered down to 1680x1050 using the better colors sweetfx preset.

Thanks for that, uncleanspirit - there's really no difference I can see between fade touched and ultra as far as her hair is concerned.

 

I was partially correct: I did some testing and the shadowing on the hair makes a decent difference between HBAO and HBAO Full. Interestingly, despite the game saying changing AO type will only take effect when you reload the game, it actually works immediately, meaning I should be able to switch between them when I want. There's also a massive difference in grass and to a lesser extent other foliage, so I'm definitely going to be using that when I can get away with it. I was lagging really, really badly in The Hinterlands a short while ago, but I restarted the game and performance shot up. That happens every so often; it's like everything gets backed up. I can tell when that's happening, rather than it being an fps issue, because menus and the search radar and sounds start to lag as well. I push the game to the maximum my laptop can handle, so I have to try to balance things out, but now I know I can change AO on the fly that's pretty great. Vegetation doesn't work in the same way - I'll test tomorrow to see if it 'recompiles' if you quick load after changing the setting I get an fps boost in The Hinterlands if I turn vegetation down to medium - which only changes the distance at which it renders, and not the quality of it - which is likely because of all that HBAO (full) that is rendering on the individual blades of grass. Vegetation on its own isn't meant to have that much of an effect on performance, but AO does. As does tesselation - one of the biggest hits along with meshes, AO and MSAA as far as I'm away - but I'm not prepared to sacrifice ultra meshes, and while I compromise and have tesselation at high rather than ultra I don't want to go lower.

Ok, I gave it a shot and swapped between Ultra and Fade Touched. Sera's hair looked the same, but to prove that I'm not crazy, check out my IQ's shaved hair. All other settings remained the same, including HBAO Full. Even Fade-Touched shaved hair looks terrible up-close, but it's way better than Ultra:

I've been using the free cam to look up close at bioware's elf designs and realize how badly I designed mine, especially the nose.  I can't wait until the Mirror gets into the game so I can redesign the face and flatten out the nose features, ala bioware.  Finished with Haven last night in my latest run.  Here are a few shots I grabbed.
