I keep meaning to, but then rush through them and tell myself I'll just go through the codex later, which I haven't yet. Next playthrough for sure though, since I'm over the rush of finding new things.

I read everything and have a friend who didn't. This morning we were skyping and

Spoiler

He blazed his way through the game and wondered why he didn't understand anything.

On my first couple PTs I don't read any notes/letters or codex I find, I'm too anxious to play the game to stop and read. But after I've played a few times all the way through I'll slow down and actually read the codex entries. They're actually pretty interesting (most of em) and I've learned alot about Thedas and its people from just reading the codex...I did this in all the DA games, tho I noticed some codex is repeated. I'll find the same entries in all 3 games. And as someone who's invested HOURS of gameplay in each game and has read all the codex I'd really like to see some new ones. Maybe even extended codex entries (for the repeated ones) with more info.

I read them, but I agree the font makes them terrible to look at.

*sigh I miss Origin's interface*

I would have read them if they put them in a larger font. But since they didn't, they were difficult to read, and so, got skipped. Next.

I don't like to struggle with trying to read fonts when I'm playing a game. Please, while I know they're trying to make them look nice, they should understand that we might actually want to see what they spend a lot of time writing. Who makes these decisions, anyway?

Oh and since someone brought up the codex.....

Next time, while I know the cards are pretty and all that, please understand that my brain doesn't organize things in pictograms. I think I took a look at the codex to look up something once, then went out and bought the guide. Stuff is in the codex but I can't find anything. Make it simple. Is it possible for Bioware to have a decent codex anymore? Mass Effect 2 was the last decent codex.

You find out both of those things in the game itself, not in notes

Well, he didn't know who the Dread Wolf was, and I've known that since Origins. And I think he just didn't talk to Morrigan after the Well of Sorrows.

They were better in Origins, but they still add greatly to lore and are often fun. I read them all

Sounds like he had bigger problems than just not reading the notes on the ground lol my brother is the same way, he doesn't pay attention at all, skips the dialogue and cutscenes and then wonders what's going on

I like reading them. Most of them are tragic, which adds an emotion to the environment.

I'd rather listen to dialogue than read. Im just not the type to add reading as part of my immersion in games. Less reading. More action. More loot. More places to discover. More crafting. More audio dialogue.

Edit: What I really appreciated about the ME franchise is that they implemented a voice for everything in the codex. I wish they did the same in the DA franchise

That works for me

I don't read codex entries on history, books, creatures, etc. Those show up in the actual in-game codex and can be read any time you're feeling bored.

I DO read quest-related ones though; letters that lead you to go here or there. These do not show up in the in-game codex, so if you miss reading them they're gone, the same applies to all of the landmarks. There are quite a few plot related letters connecting the Western Approach, Exalted Plains, Emerald Graves, and Emprise du Lion. These primarily show the progression of the Venatori relic hunting as well as the Red Templar mining activity and I think are worth a read.

I wish I could've read the codex in this game but too bad the text is so ****** small I practically need to put my monitor under a microscope to know what the **** is going on.

I play on PC and it's right next to me, so size isn't an issue...but I wish they weren't in all caps...that hurts legibility and doesn't add anything to the flavor so...no idea why they did that?

Sometimes. Not as many as I should. I feel a bit guilty about that.

First playthrough I absolutely read everything and it was well worth it in my opinion. I think they add a lot to the various areas.

I've not read a lot and I think this was due to the inflated amount of notes and the unified, loveless presentation. It does not matter if it's a book, a note, a confession letter or anything, it always looks like an email.

I'd suggest to put less clickaway prompts into a game and design a more suitable presentation for the ones you carefully pick. They were clearly inspired by Skyrim I think but they neglected this very matter.  It was a good choice by Bethesda that you can read all this unnecessary background information in books that are well placed in the level archicture. Nevertheless, I think the Codex is worthwile and should not be removed.

A different background for letters like a paper texture would harm the clean look of the game but it would certainly serve the immersion which was not the biggest goal I assume.

After all, it was surely a lot of work to write this stuff so it should be handled better to excite ppl to read.

The ones that are actually notes and letters, yes. The Codex entries, not usually - I figured I could look them up later if they were important.

I try to read them, though not the second I pick them up (unless it seems intriguing). Unfortunately, something about the font, colours or whatever strains my eyes if I read more than one or two at a time. So I'll probably end up reading all of them, but it will be across multiple playthroughs, not on the same one.

I would like to but what ever font they used that makes everything in capitals makes it painful to actually read them. Thats why i stopped reading them.

All I find, most of the time as I find them instead of later. Unless they're a repeat from DAO and DA2, and even then I might quickly scroll through it.

I think they should have gone the Assassin's creed route and just had a narrator voice it over once you click on the codex section to read it.

Of course not when it pops up after first collecting it but if you go through the codex section.

I would have liked to have just collected everything then head to my room to hear Varric read over Hard in hightown. lol!

One of the ME games had a narrated codex, and I hated that - the voice was entertaining enough, but I found it distracting overall since you could read faster than he talked.

That said, having Varric narrate Hard in Hightown would be brilliant, so I'd totally be in favour of a few exceptions like that.
