Facial animations are pretty bad and actually a step back from DA2. One important thing is the eyes. In DAO and DA2 the eyes make subtle movements to the side, while now everyone is having a permanent blank stare and can only blink occasionally. It's a small and subtle factor and I hadn't even realized it was there in DA2 until I watched scenes from DAI and the dead eyes unnerved me.

Then there's the lack of movement in the faces. Everybody is shiny and their faces are smooth and lifeless as if they've used too much botox. There's hardly any movement of the forehead and cheeks most of the time. When they're supposed to be angry they can furrow their brow a bit when they try really hard, but even simple talking looks weird because they tend to only move their mouth. And mouth movement is not good either. They talk by moving their jaw up and down way too much.

When you talk to someone IRL you don't usually get to stare into the other's mouth like that. Reminds me of a puppet:

It's odd to claim DA2 is superior in anything, but it actually did facial animations very well. They could convey emotions in a believable manner with subtle changes.

They were rather poor early in the game I felt, but got noticeably better the further into the game it gets. It's like looking into the development process, they got better at animating the further they got into the game.

That said, I don't find the animations meaningfully better than Dragon Age 2 or Mass Effect 3. "Serviceable" is a fair descriptor... a few stand out great moments.. a few dreadful moments.. lots of moments where you don't notice either way (which is fine.. it's only when you distinctly become aware of it is animation ever bad.. it should not come to thought if it's done right).

The facial animations are downright nauseating. I expected a lot better from Bioware in that department.

I guess it's not 100% related to this issue but I really hated the character creator in the Mass Effect games, everyone was pretty ugly.  I've seen countless videos and have never seen an attractive custom character.  I'm biased I guess but I thought I created a pretty decent FemShep, however it took me waaaay longer than it should have and I still wasn't 100% jazzed about her in any of the games.  And to me the only way to make her look decent was to give her the pixie cut.

In DA:2 I didn't think the facial animations were bad, it's just that the textures and lighting was so cartoonish and flat.  I really hated the design of that game overall, like a lot.  However Fenris was the best of the bunch animation-wise (and character wise, really).

It's very biased that you always use Fenris as an example of a good animation. Were most animations are filled with uncanny valley.

For some reason, I notice Lelianna's mouth more than the mouths of other characters. There is something very plastic about her face and the movements of her face. I don't notice that gaping black mouth opening on the others so much but with her, I'm always staring at her mouth.

The only problem I really have with the faces is that the "sad-face" or "hurt" expression has the corners of the mouth drawn way too far down, and it makes it look very cartooney. It's very apparent in the moment in the prologue when Cass helps your character back to their feet, but it's also visible in parts of Dorian's personal quest.

Other than that it's pretty alright. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for now.

Most of my screenshots are of Fenris. And I wasn't claiming that DA2 was perfect. I agree it also had its more unfortunate moments.

But I wouldn't say that most of its facial animations fell under that category. DA2 didn't have me staring at a character's mouth because it looked so weird. And they could more successfully move their eyebrows.

I noticed a real mixed bag with the animations. Some of the facial animations on Morrigan for instance looked nice- I think there were a couple times where she had a very nice subtle arched eyebrow and smirk that was really well done. Then she had some where she made the most comically exaggerated frown/ smile that looked absurd.

Probably the one common animation thing that bugged me was how everytime somebody was frowning or trying to look angry, their whole nose would shift up really wakwardly, just sort of messing up their whole face. Just always looked really unnatural.

Leliana specifically has problems because they use the same model for the bad future scenes (just with a different texture) so her whole facial structure is off.

Love it. It would be perfect for a horror game.
