Nope, we are stuck with that jerk for the entire game.

What's wrong with Varric?

Woa, well that's a bummer. I mean I have no real interest in kicking Varric, and I suppose if he dealt with Hawke, he can deal with anything ...but I really thought he could leave.

Didn't you know? Varric is Thedas' Public Enemy #1, mostly because he wasn't psychic and didn't realize the expedition would unleash red lyrium, that his best friend's apostate boy/friend would blow up the Chantry, and that the Grey Wardens were dumb enough to be keeping a darkspawn Magister with the ability to taintsurf on blood magic lockdown without telling anyone. Clearly, any rational person can see that these things are entirely his fault, and thus he should be executed/murder-knifed/permanently relegated to the darkest timeline.

In my last playthrough, I didn't recruit Vivienne and after I did the Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hearts quest, she was no longer available to be recruited.

Casandra described him best: He is a lying snake who is only ever looking out for himself.

But... she's trying to make a potion to save someone's life.  She won't tell you what it's for, but as she said, she'd keep your secrets if she were doing the same for you.

She's not, actually. In the follow-ups with her and Duke Bastien's family you find out that his condition was diagnosed by the Circle as incurable years ago. I've never done this, but apparently she recognises if you give her a fake wyvern heart but continues anyway. That's because the whole point of the series of events was to make her look good for Bastien's son who's now on the Council of Heralds, and for Bastien's sister who's a Grand Cleric. She used her lover's death to secure support for herself (and presumably for her candidacy for Divine).

Oh, for ****'s sake. Not even Cassandra actually believes this.

But nobody sees her attempt the cure except the Inquisitor, and she's secretive about it until that point.  The book you find in her room also suggests the cure is rare, difficult to make, and unstable, not the sort of thing you'd try if you were just half-assing something for show.  She may spin the funeral and everything so she ultimately benefits, but I do not believe her goal with the cure was purely selfish.

I am not. Varric was meh in DA2(or however much of DA2 is actually true) and is despicable in DAI.

Woah, I take it that you didn't like anyone in DA2 crew then if even Varric was meh to you, but seriously as much as I love Varric. Cassandra got the point, and hell I was little upset to learn that he's been keeping it to himself the whole time.

In DA2 I liked Aveline, Bethany, and Merrill. Was meh on Fenris, Sebastian, Tallis, and Varric. Didn't like Anders, Carver, and Isabela.

All of this complaints on Varric when we had a bigger snake than him and I'll give you two hints: has pointy ears and is bald.

It's worth recruiting Viv just for the satisfaction of telling her her personal quest (wyvern heart) sounds like a completely irrelevant waste of your time and you're not doing it.

****, I even collected the Circle books for her because at least that seemed something that's not entirely self-serving. I've made cross-country trips to help my peeps because their or someone else's life was in danger or their requests are Inquisition-relevant (Varric's red lyrium stuff, for example), or even because their self-serving interests were, at the very least, fully explained and obviously meant a lot to their peace of mind or future well-being (like Josephine's family quest before you find out her life actually is in danger).

But "limp, backhanded flattery" + "fight this incredibly deadly creature because magical ingredient" + "no, you don't need to know why but chicks b4 dicks amirite"? **** you, find another chump.

Sorry, needed to vent. I did laugh at her reaction, though.

You know, I don't have a major problem with Viv personally (aside from her forced wins in every argument) but this is too true and funny as hell. In my recent play through I just went out and killed the common Wyvren, said "**** this place", and gave it to her. She asked why I did it and I picked "because I hate you." because it dawned on me that this particular IQ really did hate her.  Her reaction was priceless though. I should have just turned her down to see her response.

As for Varric, yeah when the little guy joins up you're never getting rid of him. Hawke couldn't get rid of him and neither can the IQ.    Seriously though, I hope he doesn't show up in the next game.

Over a third of our companions this time were snakes in the garden that is our companion roster.

Leliana is a lying snake who looks out for herself a lot, but even she occasionally attempts to help people. Varric is a "worse" spymaster because he cares about people. He's got your back. In fact, the only reason he's a liar in the situation with Cassandra is because he's got Hawke's back.

By the way, who are the other snakes you're referring to?

Your list of despicable things re: Varric are literally all things that he could not have foreseen going bad. Also, almost all of them were meant to benefit people who were not him. Even lying about Hawke- Varric could have washed his hands of everything had he just given Hawke to Cassandra. His lying put him in a far more dangerous position, but he did it anyway because he cared more about his friend than he did himself. Then, the moment he realized that Hawke was actually definitely needed, he brought her in, despite knowing that Cassandra would try to kill him. Anyone who thinks he only looks out for himself is being willfully ignorant of his overall characterization.

Relevant to the topic: I mean, Cassandra basically tells him to get lost the moment the Herald proves herself a competent fighter, and he insists on staying with them. Then, even though there's really no reason for him to be in the Inquisition, he commits anyway and remains committed, no matter what.

In addition to this, post game he volunteers to help Kirkwall rebuild. In other words, after the Inquisition has done its job, he leaves to go help more people.

Screw Cass, I actually agree with Varric about keeping Hawke secret.  He's been through enough BS. Although I would have preferred Hawke to the IQ overall but I liked that Varric would rather be imprisoned than give up his friend who is going through other problems than to be sitting at some Mage/Templar conclave and following around some Herald.

He was whooping ass at Adamant though. I would have loved to at least have him as a companion.
