(for the record, go into the prestige page or whatever of the menu (bottom right tile), and look through your challenges. the completed ones with a double star are ones with a title/banner/portrait. Scroll over those stars to see said cosmetics, and press the indicated key/button to apply them.)

Aha! It's not always the "5 Star" rank, you actually have to use the stick to move left until you reach whichever rank awarded the title! This explains why I could never find one that I could equip.

If I were only playing with friends, I wouldn't care about appearances at all. I've put on some mediocre banner and title because I pug often.

The banners for the most part are pretty bad and the titles are total crap. I find understandable that some players want to ditch them altogether.

Actually some are pretty cool. The one million gold one is probably my fav, but havent seen all 250 character extractions yet... but most.

The banner (etc.) setting menu is one of the worst, least intuitive pieces of user interface I've ever seen.

 

I've actually submitted it to some of those "bad U.I." websites.

Since Bioware thought it was a brilliant idea not to let us check each other's loadout, banners/portraits/titles seem to be the most reliable way to judge a player at first glance. Therefore, not using either may lead to you getting kicked more often. Such is the prize of being a hipster I suppose.

You could even do N7 40, if you only started say Vanguards and Adepts, and never opened any other classes.  Nothing like PUGs/BSNers who get confused by the "n00b" with low N7 topping the score board
