What if...the Elven Gods were spirits, some of the Maker's first children, the ones who shaped and created the world.
But the Maker soon became furious with them as they portrayed themselves and where revered as gods by the People. He created the Veil banishing them from the Fade and the Golden City, forcing them to become...real.
If that was not enough, to punish them further he made them wander the Fade in their sleep, with the illusion of reaching the Golden City just to remind them what they are and have lost. (Mythal says the world was betrayed) They endured and became the first Dreamers.
Between the Dalish some of them are known as the Creators, they made wonders and Arlathan was magnificent, a reproduction, in my opinion, of the Golden City they once lived in.
But there were others, obsessed with reaching the Golden City, they are know as the Forgotten Ones. And they managed to enter the Fade physically (Solas hints that before the Magisters and the Inquisitor others have managed to do it) and while inside the Golden City something terrible happened.
From wiki: "According to writer Patrick Weekes, what Corypheus experienced was on par with going to Heaven and finding it covered by Blight" So, what we know is that somehow...the city became corrupted and the source of the Blight.
The Forgotten Ones returned to the world only to represent some the worst aspects of existence: disease, terror, spite and malevolence, in one word they were corrupted.
Then a war between them and the pantheon erupted and Fen'Harel was the only one who could walk without fear among both groups, he saw the People suffer and...wanted to save them, free them.
We probably will never know what his original plan was but, i say that Mythal was part of it and she was betrayed because of that. (She says I was betrayed) Perhaps she was the chosen one, maybe Fen'Harel wanted to seal all the Gods, even himself, but not her, the Mother, the Great Protector, because the People would be lost without her.
After the murder, probably, he was beside himself with rage and decided to proceed with his plan anyway, sealing the other Gods in two separate realms beyond the Fade, Pantheon remnants in the "Eternal City", accessible through an Eluvian, while The Forgotten Ones in a place known as the "Void", where no mortal nor god could have remained in, or so the legends says. But that was not the end, just the beginning, because the Blight corrupts everything it touches.
The lyrium was corrupted and in the depths of the earth some ancient draconic creatures began to whisper. The so-called Old Gods, perhaps they were created by Ghilan'nain and never fully killed, maybe the Forgotten Ones invested part of their power in them. (kinda like Corypheus and the Red Lyrium Dragon)
What we know is that among the others, the Old Gods whispered to the Magisters of Tevinter, the Imperium conquered much of the land of Thedas and the elven homeland, Arlathan. The Maker's revenge perhaps. (?)
Now, i think the Magisters who entered physically into the Black City were tricked by the Old Gods, they promise power, god status, instead they want them to become corrupted, spreading the Blight across Thedas.
Since the Imperium borders stretched across nearly the entire continent at that moment, it was a perfect plan.
Later Fen'Harel "reappeared" as Shartan, leader of the elven slaves who joined Mythal/Andraste's rebellion, they wanted to free the People but she was betrayed and he didn't live to see the new elven homeland in the Dales. We know that he didn't die but instead fell into the Uthenera and after awakening he realized that the future was way worse than what was before for his people, so he decided to use the power of the Orb but was too weak to unlock it.
Here I think he didn't gave the Orb to Corypheus willingly but was forced to. Then after recovering from the long sleep he began to hunt Corypheus down in order to regain the Orb. That's why he was near the Conclave.
The rest is Dragon Age Inquisition folks.
So, what was/is Solas up to?
1. He says that under normal circumstances the elves can't be saved oppressed as they are now, but there's Briala so he already has an ally virtually.
2. What's with the Old Gods souls? Are ancient draconic souls that important, who or what are they?
3. What's the full power of the Orb? Maybe Solas really wanted to collapse the Fade and reshape reality, maybe it's the only way to enter safely into the Black City and destroy the source of the Blight.
4. Or was the Orb the key? To free the other Gods? They could have helped restoring the elves and fight against the Blight, just like they fought the Forgotten Ones in the past.
5 Since we know it's alive, what is the nature of lyrium?
