@Bob Walker: Guilt. According to Leliana, she wields it like a knife.
Anyone else think that the advisors overshadow the companions?

If by overshadowed you mean made me want to launch them out of a trebuchet more then any companion, then yes Cullen overshadowed all of the companions.

Correction *coughs* "Leliana overshadows everyone" would be more accurate thing to say.

I think the larger problem was that all of the companions (save Cass, Solas, Varric) were optional. I think that made it harder for them to involve them too heavily in the plot. I would rather not be able to kick out whomever at any time (since I very rarely do anyway, Sera and Blackwall were the only ones I ever did and it was because they wanted to leave), if it meant they could be tied in more closely.

I think having 12 people with companion content is simply too much. I didn't like it in ME2 where I forgot about half the crew after doing their mission and I don't like it here.
I think they could easily have 2 or 3 companions less and flesh out the others more and connected them with the plot.

Maybe they have 4 cutscenes, but 2 are optional (too high approval or too low), so in 80% of playthroughs they only have 1 cutscene or something like that... It is awful

Some companions were overshadowed slightly I think. In my game Vivienne would have ended up like (the real) Cole, as I pretty much forgot she existed. On the other hand I wouldn't have like my advisers schlepping alongside me because they have their jobs to do and that requires them to be at central command.

I think the companions who seemed a bit like outsiders in the inquisition were important for my protagonists who all were far from being humans or nobles.
And I think the characters who made most impact were the ones you took everywhere with you. You could ask their input and so on. Not sure how much approval affected their reactions, but anyway I tend to take along the ones who seem to approve each quizzy the most, since they'd make a good team, and feel like friends (helping defining the main character).
Some of your more optional companions had a chance to affect the tone of your inquisition in some way, if you let them. (Sera and Cole at least...)
Though I think there was room left for DLC, which I hope we'll see eventually. ![]()

This is probably due to the fact that advisors are inherently connected to the main story, while the companions aside from Cassandra perhaps are not at least not to the same degree.
That said I feel that i have very minimal interaction with Josephine and Leliana or at least in the same amount I have with some other companions. Cassandra is the one who outside of her quest and romance has the most interaction with IQ.

I think the advisor are certainly more important than some (most) of the companions. I think such a wide array of characters were cast as companions more to appeal to a wide range of audience values. I can easily name 3-4 companions that could have been dropped from the game and I personally would have had no objections. However, everyone has different tastes and my 3-4 will be different than many other people.

Just my 2 cents, I think the advisers are supposed to feel like equals that you have a connection to. These are the people that you are running the Inquisition with. I count Cassandra as a de facto adviser since she started the Inquisition. I am very happy overall with how the advisers worked out.
Being someone this powerful is supposed to feel isolating, hence Bull calling you boss, and Varric telling you that it can be hard to remember you are a person.
That being said, it would of been amazing for different companions to tie in with different major plot lines, like Vivienne at the Winter Palace (I think the Winter Palace should of been more fleshed out and tied into the Exalted Plains, as someone who didn't read the books I was a bit lost). How cool would it have been if you had turned down her offer to join the inquisition for it to affect you later in the game when you see her there.
I also think Bull's personal quest should of been a larger one/tied to the main plot, I can't believe none of the advisers had anything to say about gaining or loosing such a large ally. I definitely feel like there should of been a war table meeting to hear everyone's opinions on the matter.
Would anyone else just prefer to not have optional companions in favor of more content that ties them into the plot and lets them interact more. My favorite scenes with Cassandra are with her and Varric, I loved seeing my companions interact with one another.

Well I believe how one feels about the companions depends if you have the banter bug. My connection to the companions would be a lot deeper if I got to know them better but they are almost silent in my PTs.
