Is the spirit blade ability considered "physical" weapon damage and therefore would it be affected by armor penetration?

Is the spirit blade ability considered "physical" weapon damage and therefore would it be affected by armor penetration?
As it says in the description of the ability, Spirit Blade does Spirit damage. Spirit damage ignores armour. In other words: Armour penetration is pointless.
