So on each main mission there's a recommended level. Playing on normal or hard I would wait til I was the highest recommended level before starting that quest. Should I level up a couple levels above the recommendation while on Nightmare? Or it will it be alright if I go ahead and do the mission?

For example, In Hushed Whispers recommends level 4-7, well I'm level 7 on Nightmare...should I wait or go for it?

I have done many nightmare playthrough's i actually just stick to nightmare now. I just get the best stuf for the mission and be the same max rank for it.

On that one just craft armor with magic defense get some high dps weapon's and stock up on health regen potions you will be fine. Make sure though by level 9 get emprise de lion unlocked then farm tier 3 armor/weapons after that stock up on tier 3 material's. That way you can rock level 16-21 based gear as a level 9.

You can get deft hands fine tools to unlock the secret doors by level 5 if you give  leliana all her hinterland agents and spend 2 points.

Also grab the T2 schematics from Val Royeaux and fill with the best mats you can find (you can get Paragon's Luster from Forbidden Oasis) for In Hushed Whispers and In Your Heart Shall Burn if you're having problems.  No need to outlevel the content - In Your Heart Shall Burn is definitely doable at level 9 on Nightmare.

I recommend playing the content at the max recommended level or one level over. Playing the content one level over is helpful if your gear isn't up to par as your team will often be a level below you.

depends. DA:I is very gear-dependant. you cannot do much with statics... i mean stats and 8 skills anyway.

NM is not that hard, if you have proper equipment. having proper equipment means RNG gods love you, or you spent some time on farming and exploring - in that case you're way above minimum recommended level (i usually am)

if you're... accustomed to the game you can try it regardless of the gear, main story quests in general are not very hard; Redcliffe castle has 2-3 quite interesting moments imho, just use enviorment and control party very carefully. if you plan to solo it... well, i cannot imagine doing it with crappy gear, but if you manage it - kudos

If you feel you are ready to give it a go make a save and then start it. If its too much for you reload your save gain another level or two then try again.

yeah, I just did the maps at their max recommended levels. Not going to do Nightmare again.. it just felt like a grind. no extra skill required. Ill stick to hard from here on out.

There isnt a difference between playing on the lowest or the highest recommend level. Enemies scale. I think they even scales slightly above whats recommended. Going past recommendation is going to ruin the point of nightmare, and you wont even get experience for your kills.

The thing to go by is your gear. Higher difficulties help players scale their game to their growing familiarity with the crafting system and effective skill combos. If an area is too hard i wouldnt try leveling. I would craft better gear.

if it felt like a grind, you are missing some key skills. Nightmare enemies die so fast against all of the more powerful things the game has to offer. And once a player knows how to find good schematics and materials, nightmare becomes a requirement just to get anything outnof combat whatsoever. Just the masterwork schematics from the inquisition perk alone practically break mid game with tier 2 materials.

I made a save before doing the quest, just in case. Also I've only been able to craft for very few of my companions so far, with the schematics from Val Royeaux and Redcliffe Village. I took the companions with the best crafted gear. Which was BW and Sera (I would've brought Viv, but Dorian was there, so) anyway, at first it was quite difficult with just me and Dorian. Before I even got my first companion back, I went down and ran in circles as Dorian casting spells lol. But it was do-able. Just careful execution and placement.

If you're looking for an easier time, either outlevel the recommended levels entirely, or craft good gear and do the mission as soon as you hit the minimum recommended level.

Since the enemies scale within the recommended range, you'll face easier enemies if you enter at the lowest recommended level. For example, the Envy demon in Champions of the Just becomes immune to more CC at higher levels.

The story quests are pretty easy. I've never done them at level 4 or 5, but the Alexius fight is pretty easy because you can use your mark, so it is doable at level 4 I imagine without much stress. The Champions of the Just might be a bit harder. I always do them at like level 12, because I do all the side content then do story quests.

In your heart shall burn at level 6 or 7 or so would be very hard I imagine tho.

I did Champions of the Just on my first playthrough. It made In Hushed Whispers seem like a cakewalk. There's a pretty huge difficulty difference between the two, IMO. Way fewer supply caches on the templar side + timed elements + that Envy demon.

Which makes sense from a balance perspective, because doing Champions of the Just results in seeing more Venatori throughout the game, rather than red templars, and Venatori are much easier to fight than red templars. Plus, Calpernia >>> Samson any day. ;)

Overlevel. You won't really regret it.

The first time I did Nightmare, I tried to be at maximum recommended level or even 1 level above. Really, it was overkill in my opinion. Nightmare just is not that hard. Like others said above however, you need to keep crafting better and better gear, for you and your companions. So, you need to farm materials etc.

This has been a good guide ty all. I've been upgrading my partys gear as much as possible and finally crafted weapons and armor for EVERYONE. I'll just wait till I get to max recommended level, I just did that in 'In Hushed Whispers' and we barely even touched our potions or grenades, didn't even have to use tactical cam, and finished the quest with ease :). I will continue to farm schematics and materials, I've also been blowing my money on alot of crafting materials. Doing much better on NM now lol.

Dont forget to dupe the bs mats like masterwork materials or dragon bone. On nightmare you only get a couple dragon pices per kill so dupe that **** till they fix it.

Proof here of what i am talking about

That "proves" that a level 15 dragon has crappy loot.  Drops have nothing to with difficulty level, not even one bit.  Higher level dragons drop much more.

I also advocate item duping.

Is it cheating? I prefer to think of it as doing a Cory.

I have seen the throne of your Random Numbers God and it was empty.

.... besides a crappy dagger on the arm rest. Really should have saved before I stormed the heavens.

Really? Never noticed that but then again I have no patience for doing things slowly so I just took them all on while popping barriers etc. Read that the difficulty peaks at that fight but I'm not sure because I ran into a lone apostate that almost had me on the storm coast. Pushed him down a cliff with blackwalls sheild bash and he survived ! A badass that mage for sure hardest fight I've had so far.

He's a hidden boss. You get a key from him that unlocks a cabin door and gives you the awesome Mighty Offence Tonic.

I also managed to knock him off the cliff, with Bull's Mighty Blow. Took damn near all his health away. Not on Nightmare though, just hard.

Still took a bloody age to kill though, even with only a slither of health left. That Barrier spamming swine!
