I have seen countless posts from people complaining about warriors. I figured I should just make a quick post outlining my play style as it is both effective at surviving on nightmare, and doing great damage. This build is more of an endgame focused build, and is very gear dependent. The general consensus on the forums are that past a certain point crafting makes the game so easy it doesn't matter what you do. (Which is true actually) So here it goes:
Two Handed Warrior/ Champion
Primary Build Strategy
The synergy from having a high critical chance and the flow of battle passive. In order to strike enough times and fast enough to make a real difference your primary attack will be whirlwind. Once you get hidden blades enchants you will start putting out spiky burst damage (like rogues can do while half asleep). Later in the game, with both flow of battle, high critical chance, and the upgrade to walking fortress you can almost chain cast walking fortress while whirl winding in a dense pack of enemies. Why worry about tanking when you're immune to damage AND doing tremendous AoE damage yourself!
At this point one might say "But What about single target damage or bosses?" Simple answer TO THE DEATH! use charging bull and combat roll to stack to the death and avoid damage then just pop walking fortress whirlwind for a few seconds so that hidden blades proc and laugh maniacally as you shred some big baddie in seconds while taking no damage. This strategy works well on dragons, especially with the upgrade to whirlwind. Wait until the dragon does its wing buffet and just LAY INTO that dragon with whirlwind. The numbers will climb to insane heights.
Two Handed Weapon
Mighty Blow (and the upgrade): This will be a bread and butter ability throughout the game. Especially early on. You may find yourself neglecting it later in the game, but it will always be satisfying to use. (especially when you stack to the death on a dragon high enough to get a critical for over 50,000 damage)
Block and Slash (and the upgrade): You get a lot with the ability. Defense, guard generation, damage, and CC. This will also be a really effective way to take out tank enemies with shields. With to the death on them, one or two block and slashes will take them out. The fact that it even works on dragons makes it awesome.
Flow of Battle: This is one of the fundamental abilities of the build. Critical hits will lower your cool downs. As I have stated earlier this provides some strategic options that excel.
Shield Breaker: Since you'll be critting a lot, might as well lower your enemies armor.
Whirlwind (and the upgrade): A lot of posts have claimed this is lackluster, and while I might agree, the synergy with the build strategy makes it the fundamental attack. the upgrade however can give you some juicy huge numbers especially when used with to the death.
Clear a Path: Helps with stamina management, especially when whirlwind spamming on a dense pack of enemies.
Champion
The entire tree is required for the real synergy to shine. The last two abilities are the real focus however, with their upgrades.
To the Death (and the upgrade): This is the answer to single target encounters and bosses. The upgrade helps with guard generation to soften dangerous encounters between walking fortress burst opportunities.
Walking Fortress (and the Upgrade): Immunity to damage would be good enough, but the upgrade makes everything work so well together. When surrounded by enemies this along with flow of battle will reset your cool downs super fast.
Vanguard
War Cry: Helps build guard early in the game. It also works to draw enemies close to you later in the game to maximize whirlwind damage.
Challenge (with upgrade): I use this for dragon fights, single target taunt for cutting words and stamina regen
Charging Bull (with the upgrade): One of the best warrior abilities in the game, and a permanent addition to the action bar. Generates guard, does damage, knocks down enemies AND with the upgrade gives you a free cast
Cutting Words: Damage buff to taunted enemies, works great with war cry.
Gear:
You'll need some decent critical chance to make this work. If your not the crafting type then try these axes:
Rebuke of the Sunderland (Emprise du Lion)
Axe of the Dragon Hunter (Bonnie Sims)
If you do want to craft then you'll get the most critical chance out of the Ornate Battleaxe. It has 2 leather slots and one cloth slot and can reach 50% critical chance and 21% critical damage bonus.
There are some armor choices to manage your critical chance. At first I went full critical chance just to see how high I could get it, and i reached over 90% (with Varric) however I'm currently sitting at 65% (solo) and 70% (w/ Varric). I am running Battle master Armor for the metal utility slots to max out Strength. I am also using the Superior Venatori Helm.
+10 cunning necklace (rather difficult puzzle in exalted plains)
+10 Atk% ring (a dragon loot item)
+20 crit damage ring (there are 2, one is in hissing wastes during the tomb of fairel quest. the other is in western approach in the area you unlock with war table)
i did a quest in Emerald graves that was in a haunted mansion. gave me +10 to cunning.
The mask of the grand duchess is a great item to boost your critical chance early on. It can be acquired from the Wicked Eyes Wicked hearts ques tline. I didn't replace it until I crafted my axe as it was such a huge critical boost the damage boost and cool down reduction was noticeable from just wearing it.
My current numbers

Mastercraft: HIDDEN BLADES. Synergizes really well with this build. I run the 5 hit on my weapon and the 4 hit on my armor. It makes the damage output night and day.
Gameplay
Charging Bull > War Cry > Walking Fortress > Whirlwind. Whatever doesn't get simply shredded by the time walking fortress is over will certainly be hurting. You should nearly ALWAYS have charging bull back up. this will let you disengage from the pack of enemies or just knock them all down and get a free mighty blow.
Bosses/Enemy tanks/ Big 2Handed mobs
AoE the lesser enemies first and then stack to the death on these big guys. mitigate their damage with block and slash/charging bull, or just avoid it since a lot of their attacks are slow and easily avoided. Then pop walking fortress and whirlwind on them. you should get one or two hidden blade procs before disengaging. This will tear them apart and if they survive, just rinse and repeat.
I have had a ton of fun playing with this build. I have done a lot of the content both solo and with a group (typically all ranged) and it has always felt really strong. I am planning on making a highland ravager kill video, but I'm lazy. I did solo thing and really fast to, although i think i can kill it even faster by switching a few things so i'll focus on that next. Hopefully someone reads this and gets some good ideas.
Cheers!
