NEW Update!!: Highland Ravager Kill video 1:35 min!!

Update: Highland Ravager kill video. under 3 min!

https://www.youtube....h?v=64OX-VYnjZo

I have seen countless posts from people complaining about warriors. I figured I should just make a quick post outlining my play style as it is both effective at surviving on nightmare, and doing great damage. This build is more of an endgame focused build, and is very gear dependent. The general consensus on the forums are that past a certain point crafting makes the game so easy it doesn't matter what you do. (Which is true actually) So here it goes:

Two Handed Warrior/ Champion

Primary Build Strategy

The synergy from having a high critical chance and the flow of battle passive. In order to strike enough times and fast enough to make a real difference your primary attack will be whirlwind. Once you get hidden blades enchants you will start putting out spiky burst damage (like rogues can do while half asleep). Later in the game, with both flow of battle, high critical chance, and the upgrade to walking fortress you can almost chain cast walking fortress while whirl winding in a dense pack of enemies. Why worry about tanking when you're immune to damage AND doing tremendous AoE damage yourself!

At this point one might say "But What about single target damage or bosses?" Simple answer TO THE DEATH! use charging bull and combat roll to stack to the death and avoid damage then just pop walking fortress whirlwind for a few seconds so that hidden blades proc and laugh maniacally as you shred some big baddie in seconds while taking no damage. This strategy works well on dragons, especially with the upgrade to whirlwind. Wait until the dragon does its wing buffet and just LAY INTO that dragon with whirlwind. The numbers will climb to insane heights.

Two Handed Weapon

Mighty Blow (and the upgrade): This will be a bread and butter ability throughout the game. Especially early on. You may find yourself neglecting it later in the game, but it will always be satisfying to use. (especially when you stack to the death on a dragon high enough to get a critical for over 50,000 damage)

Block and Slash (and the upgrade): You get a lot with the ability. Defense, guard generation, damage, and CC. This will also be a really effective way to take out tank enemies with shields. With to the death on them, one or two block and slashes will take them out. The fact that it even works on dragons makes it awesome.

Flow of Battle: This is one of the fundamental abilities of the build. Critical hits will lower your cool downs. As I have stated earlier this provides some strategic options that excel.

Shield Breaker: Since you'll be critting a lot, might as well lower your enemies armor.

Whirlwind (and the upgrade): A lot of posts have claimed this is lackluster, and while I might agree, the synergy with the build strategy makes it the fundamental attack. the upgrade however can give you some juicy huge numbers especially when used with to the death.

Clear a Path: Helps with stamina management, especially when whirlwind spamming on a dense pack of enemies.

Champion

The entire tree is required for the real synergy to shine. The last two abilities are the real focus however, with their upgrades.

To the Death (and the upgrade): This is the answer to single target encounters and bosses. The upgrade helps with guard generation to soften dangerous encounters between walking fortress burst opportunities.

Walking Fortress (and the Upgrade): Immunity to damage would be good enough, but the upgrade makes everything work so well together. When surrounded by enemies this along with flow of battle will reset your cool downs super fast.

Vanguard

War Cry: Helps build guard early in the game. It also works to draw enemies close to you later in the game to maximize whirlwind damage.

Challenge (with upgrade): I use this for dragon fights, single target taunt for cutting words and stamina regen

Charging Bull (with the upgrade): One of the best warrior abilities in the game, and a permanent addition to the action bar. Generates guard, does damage, knocks down enemies AND with the upgrade gives you a free cast

Cutting Words: Damage buff to taunted enemies, works great with war cry.

Gear:

You'll need some decent critical chance to make this work. If your not the crafting type then try these axes:

Rebuke of the Sunderland (Emprise du Lion)

Axe of the Dragon Hunter (Bonnie Sims)

If you do want to craft then you'll get the most critical chance out of the Ornate Battleaxe. It has 2 leather slots and one cloth slot and can reach 50% critical chance and 21% critical damage bonus.

There are some armor choices to manage your critical chance. At first I went full critical chance just to see how high I could get it, and i reached over 90% (with Varric) however I'm currently sitting at 65% (solo) and 70% (w/ Varric). I am running Battle master Armor for the metal utility slots to max out Strength. I am also using the Superior Venatori Helm.

+10 cunning necklace (rather difficult puzzle in exalted plains)

+10 Atk% ring (a dragon loot item)

+20 crit damage ring (there are 2, one is in hissing wastes during the tomb of fairel quest. the other is in western approach in the area you unlock with war table)

i did a quest in Emerald graves that was in a haunted mansion. gave me +10 to cunning.

The mask of the grand duchess is a great item to boost your critical chance early on. It can be acquired from the Wicked Eyes Wicked hearts ques tline. I didn't replace it until I crafted my axe as it was such a huge critical boost the damage boost and cool down reduction was noticeable from just wearing it.

My current numbers

2w4kar7.jpg

Mastercraft: HIDDEN BLADES. Synergizes really well with this build. I run the 5 hit on my weapon and the 4 hit on my armor. It makes the damage output night and day.

Gameplay

Charging Bull > War Cry > Walking Fortress > Whirlwind. Whatever doesn't get simply shredded by the time walking fortress is over will certainly be hurting. You should nearly ALWAYS have charging bull back up. this will let you disengage from the pack of enemies or just knock them all down and get a free mighty blow.

Bosses/Enemy tanks/ Big 2Handed mobs

AoE the lesser enemies first and then stack to the death on these big guys. mitigate their damage with block and slash/charging bull, or just avoid it since a lot of their attacks are slow and easily avoided. Then pop walking fortress and whirlwind on them. you should get one or two hidden blade procs before disengaging. This will tear them apart and if they survive, just rinse and repeat.

I have had a ton of fun playing with this build. I have done a lot of the content both solo and with a group (typically all ranged) and it has always felt really strong. I am planning on making a highland ravager kill video, but I'm lazy. I did solo thing and really fast to, although i think i can kill it even faster by switching a few things so i'll focus on that next. Hopefully someone reads this and gets some good ideas.

Cheers!

Great stuff.  When i got Rebuke of the Sunderland is when my game started to get fun.  Still don't have a schematic for a 2H Weapon that can beat it yet.  All I get when I farm chests is Tier 3 Dagger sh*t.  I can't seem to get lucky.  I really like Pommel Strike.  I can't not have a build without it.  It stuns and for some reason it does well over 1000 damage for me.  Cools down fast.  Gonna try this out for sure.

I wanted to be kind of different so I decided to play as an elven 2handed reaver. I think it is good dps! Why people complain about warrior ? With the 2h you can stun, damage and even burn your enemies like a mage. It is a great skill tree and ofc.it is better to combine it with some champion skills but if you want to drink dragon blood and fight injured - gogogo reaver build ! it is really fun ! You just need to have some critical chance and some crit dmg + a lot of str.

Thank you for that.  I might try this out once I get high enough level.  But wouldn't your damage suffer due to going for cunning rather than strength?

I Still stack strength on my armor and helm. The point of getting a high crit chance is the synergy with flow of battle and resetting the CD on charging bull and walking fortress. This means you can stay in the fight longer and survive easier. It also means an easier time surviving once you've stacked to the death up to a decent amount.

Was thinking about this myself. Ranged characters like archers and mages seem to be the only problem, but that's true for all warriors, even with grapple and chain.

Hmm so i was not the only one to think the best skills in 2 handed tree are mighty blow and whirlwind and then the passives. Block and slash while good is something i am absolutely terrible at using.

Don't sleep on Pommel Strike.  It's damage is really good and really quick.

pommel strike is ok and it does not help that slots are kind of limited.

Yeah, I may remove War Cry.  I already took of Mark of the Rift....didn't really use it.

This is bizarre. My current Qunari character, Khaos, is a two handed Champ that plays almost exactly like you suggest. I even have Hidden Blades on my Maul (I usually prefer AOE weapons, but found a tier three schematic in the Still Ruins... at level twelve!! Level sixteen now, and still haven't found better). This is the first warrior run that I really enjoyed. Still not as powerful as a rogue, but a blast to play regardless.

My armour has guard on hit, and charging bull tops it up fully. I start with said charge, hit mighty blow on downed foe, pop walking fortress and then spin like a mental case. Works a treat. Haven't got enough points for To The Death yet, namely as I used some to get the Sword/Shield passives. I'm starting to think that might have been overkill, and will probably re-spec to complete my Champion skill tree.

I don't use mark of the rift. As for pommel strike, it is a great ability. I used pommel strike a lot pre sky hold, but i found myself just not needing it very much or not finding situations to use it after the build was finalized in later levels.

Does your positioning need to be precise for Block & Slash, or is it all in the timing?

I've not got the hang of that skill yet.

challenge > warcry

since you wont be tank plus the upgrade and getting stamina every second feeds into charging bull ;D

Thanks for the tips. Only level 5 at the moment but charging bull makes me feel like a Vanguard from Mass Effect. I love it.
Could this high crit build also apply for a reaver tank to spam devour? Or is it wasted since I can't go for as much strength?

Actually, when i play in a group (which is rare) I am the tank. I run Sera/Varric/Solas. Also, Warcry is aoe and applies the debuff from cutting words, and helps keep enemies on you while whirl winding. Challenge would be superior in dragon fights for stamina regen, although i don't feel stamina regen is much of an issue with the CD reduction on charging bull (from flow of battle) and the passive gore and trample.

I can't find the Schematic for the Ornate Battle Axe.  I can buy the Hossberg Twainer.  I got the Serrated Greatsword and that's what I am rolling with now.  I used Dawnstone...kinda got a purple look.  But I wanna make the highest Crit Weapon I can.  Great Bear hide is the best for this right?

Got any ideas for a Weapon and Shield Champion DPS build?

My idea would be to get all the skills in the weapon and shield tree, get passives and gear that increases attack and strength.

My strategy would be: To the Death -> Shield Wall -> Payback strike -> Lunge and Slash, with Walking Fortress for when things got hairy.

The ornate Battle Axe is simply a random T3 schematic drop. Got mine in Emprise du lion in some random chest. You'll want to get the 2h haft and the pommel that use leather offense slots as well. Great bear Hide is the best material. All in all you'll get the highest critical chance using that weapon. (I got mine up to 50% crit, and the cloth slot got me a 21% crit damage boost) This will allow you to stack strength on your armor and helm in order to balance out the crit chance and the atk %.

Ornate Battle Axe

T3 Schematic, random loot drop

2 Leather offense (great bear hide)

1 cloth offense (dragon webbing)

Bound Two handed haft

T3 schematic, not sure location

2 leather offense (great bear hide)

Firm pommel

T2 schematic, val royeax shop

2 leather slots

this weapon guide is just to maximize critical chance, the purpose of this build is to get critical chance high enough to reset the CD on your major skills like walking fortress.

I haven't really played around with Weapon and Shield, however there is a really interesting thing about them, THREE masterwork slots. Weapon/Armor/Shield. Since the different tiers don't overwrite each other you could conceivably get the T1, T2, and T3 versions of the hidden blades enchants on your gear. If you could focus on both critical chance to feed flow of battle and stamina regen to feed into spamming your attacks you should be able to proc those enchants consistently.

synergize deep reserves with the challenge upgrade to keep stamina regen high, then use the flow of battle passive with a high critical chance to keep challenge and your three on use attacks off CD. you can be spamming lunge strike, shield bash, and payback strike constantly while refreshing challenge. this will help to keep your DPS going and maximize hidden blade procs.

I think I might need some more testing on this, maybe a guide for the future

Got my Highland Ravager nightmare solo down to 4 min 30 seconds. I think I can drop it to under 4 minutes. If I do I'll try and post a video

This is awesome.  I always wondered if it was possible for a 2H build to be durable like this, and you've proven it is.

I like the build, but I just gotta say you got those numbers on the dragon shows me that this is more effective when in single target use, although whirlwind is an AoE centric attack. You got such high numbers in the video because of the (I'm assuming) superb dragon-slaying rune and the to the death stacked debuff. This is something that I think you did very well to emphasize and support in your build as no other warrior besides champion has something even close to the damage potential to the death can give to a warrior.
