This is the Qun, so I think the answer is likely to be incredibly simple... If a woman gets into the Antaam, they're magicked a penis and become a man.  And if a man is determined to have the skills of a craftsman or farmer, they get their penis magicked away and become a woman...

It does not work like that. Castration has nothing to do with  efficiency. It's about dominance. There is no reason to throw away good potential solder stock.

Qun are leading a lean, mean, optimized war machine not a puppy mill. Navasha is correct that if we were going for true efficiency, most male Quns would be castrated.

Anyways, to the topic. It could very well be that assessment is strongly influenced by physical and mental acumen as well as birth bits. I could very well see them having some baby girl Qun version of Brianne of Tarth, and essentially ruling her an abnormal man of some kind and ship her out be a warrior. It's done that way with animal because they have no way of communicating and controlling them other wise. That way different then people. The people of the qun are taught self control as a staple.  With thinking people is never done for efficiency. It's only done for doninace. Added on the fact the qun is curretly trying to boost there number for war the act would be self destructive.

The Qun is all about the "true" identity and role of people. That they would have a less rigid notion of gender even as they have a very inflexible view of gender roles is not surprising.

 

 

It isn't about "true identify" in terms of belief. It is about true identify assigned by nature. And nature wouldn't make someone a woman if it didn't want them to be a woman. Thus Bioware completely changed and destoryed the Qun in DAI by completely forgetting that the Qun is based on the roles assigned by nature.

As a side note, I disagree with your statement about astronomers not producing tangible results. Astronomers chart the positions of the stars, which helps ships navigate at night. That is very useful to the Qunari who rely heavily on their navy.

Sure, and the person is picked out for you. The guy is just there to give the sperm, he's not going to have a concern if the woman get pregnant.  But Bull only sees thing on the guys end, not the woman's. He has no idea what her intentions are in the meeting. Added in the fact i'st unprotected sex with a woman who's job is to raise and teach kid. To do that it helps to have the kid first.

Notice the bolded part. If the only sex that is happening is for breeding purposes the guy would be selected as well as the woman, with no regard whether he is currently horny or not. Secondly the female partner would not only be a Tammasarian or otherwise the Quanari would soon run out of bakers and other female only roles..
