High point: attempting a Plat solo, had 5 waves survived medal, all my ops packs, medigel and missiles.

Low point: losing three missiles on an invisible wall on Giant, shortly followed by having a Phantom sneak up from behind and execute me.

WHO are the people who enjoy that style of busywork crafting gameplay?

There MUST be some people, or games wouldn't keep including it.

Conceptually it's not that different from what one does in any RPG, is it? So the game makers could say that they are giving the public what they want, with the players having the added opportunity to say "Hell with this, I'll just buy the hat I want." It clearly works for Valve. The TF2 store turns several million dollars per year, and you don't NEED anything in there to play the game at all.

Highlight: MRAWRRRR!  Took my KroSol pUUGing, landed in a lobby with two Infiltrators, to be joined soon after by a Krogan Shaman. The two infiltrators both changed their kits to Krolords. We got London Collectors, and while it was a patchy game, there was a lot of headbutting and MRAWR! between waves, and many A-Bombs were launched across the map.

Here's some Krolord-on-Krolord between-waves action:

High: Took my KroSol into a Hazard Glacier/Collector/Gold game with Nat's Krogan Sentinel for what essentially might as well have been a Thunderdome duo.  Halfway through Wave 11, Nat had 130k, I had 110k, pugs had 30k and 20k.

Low:  It was right then that Nat got kicked off Xbox Live for a forced system update.

Well I also hate RPGs with busywork crafting systems, so there.

(For example, in Far Cry 3, you can slaughter a lot of animals so you can craft bigger 'wallets' so you can... carry more animal hides. It's f*cking retarded how pointless it is.)

Basically if at any point in any game I am not kicking ass, responding to a BRIEF cutscene in which I can choose to either be moustache-twirling evil or rainbow-farting good, or taking ONE crafting action to create a more uber weapon (like, combine hilt + blade = ubersword)... then I'm f*cking bored and your game sucks.

F*cking hell I don't know why I'm swearing so much.

Wait, JR, I think you may have misunderstood me. You posed the question of who likes this stuff. I was agreeing with you that no one likes the busy work aspect, but that a lot of people like the results of it, and are prepared to pay cash to make it happen easily and quickly. Which is why the game developers put it in there.

As an aside, it's probably not a good idea to swear for the next few days, since the usual gang have been stirring stuff up the past couple days and as a result the mods have been looking more closely at the forum. It would be nice if this thread could survive the wave of deletions and locks that's already started.

Back on topic:

Highlight - I got my PC account to go over 10k CP this week :D

Lowlight - I swore I'd never care about challenges on PC :( :(

Well the 'crafting' system such as it is in ME3MP is not *too* terrible. It's a long, tedious grind but at least you see incremental gains along the way.

The crafting system in DAIMP is like seven layers of busywork, with no incremental gains. It's hideously awful.

Of course there are entire games build around pointless crafting, like all those iOS games where you run a cake shop or whatever and at first you can only bake one cake at a time, but if you craft a bunch of stuff you can eventually bake 20 cakes at a time and... that's it. That's the entire game: grind, grind, grind so you can craft more so you can get faster at crafting. A crafting fractal if you will.

= = =

Back on topic, I forgot one:

High: all Biotics game with Brannigan and Drake, Human Sentinel, Asari Adept, and Asari Justicar. You know it's a good game when the biotic explosions are so frequent that the sound glitches out. Take that, Praetorians and Scions!

Scoring 14k without even being near the controller speaks of skills way beyond the commonplace level.

Highlight: Apparently pleased the RNG gods because I unlocked the Wraith V and the BW IV today.

Highlight: Accidentally completed my first Gold Solo on Reapers/Jade with my handy dandy Havoc, who was only lvl 15 at the time.

Lowlight: Didn't actually get credit for the solo because some scrub joined Wave 3 and left Wave 6 after they kept dying.

Lowlight: Nearly got sync killed by a Banshee at the end of Wave 5, but a fire explosion finished her off before she could gut me.

Highlight: Got 20 headshots medal on the first wave.

Spoiler

High:  Next game, the Venom launched the Abomination directly at the TGI, and exploded on him

Low:  Next game Xbox froze

Highlights: Some games with Andy_3_913 and Balbock and some awesome awful normal pugs. One game was White Hazard Collectors. I managed to headbutt a Possessed A-Bomb to death on the back stairs, it took me down, Balbock revived me, we ran upstairs to the ammo crate where there was another Possessed A-Bomb, so to thank him for the earlier revive I backhanded the A-Bomb so it landed on him and blew him up. I revived him out of a lingering sense of gratitude. Andy had to leave, so for the last game Balbock and I were both Claymore FQE and we got Condor Reapers, where the spawns went weird on some of the waves. I had 3 Marauders spawn in a ring around me, which did not go well for me. But we got full extraction, aided by some extensive rage missiling. I won't mention names to avoid embarrassing the party involved.

Low point: In the Collectors game we had an escort on wave 3, I had the Cobra in my hand, a Possessed A-bomb ran into the escort circle, and I batted it out. I knew I should have missiled and taken us all out, but some sense of mercy stayed my trigger finger. How did any mercy get there?

High: my first 3 Gold PC games with The Techno Turian.

Highest of the High Never To Be Surpassed: unlocked the glorious Turian Sentinel with the credits earned from my first Gold game.

Low: I am not ready for Gold on PC. Much herping and derping.

Edit: and with all those credits from the 2 other Gold matches I just unlocked the glorious Turian Soldier. Truly this is the greatest day of my life!

Edit 2 Electric Boogaloo: and the Phaeston. So much glorious Turian goodness I can't stand it.

Speaking of turians...

Highlight: Topscored twice with the Turian Soldier on Gold today, which is quite an achievement as I normally suck with pure gun classes. Talon is master pistol. Just had to line up my shots and watch heads pop.

Lowlight: Trying this loadout too much will kill my trigger finger.

Lowlight: Got beaten by a Claymore Soldier on the third match.

Highlight: Killed the Claymore Soldier with a Possessed A-bomb.

Highlight: Another UR unlock, the Lancer IV.

Low: an evening of playing Gold so hideously badly that it was as if three months of progress and improvement just never happened.

High: three Collectors games without my PS3 crashing.  Yup, that's the most positive thing I can think to say about yesterday's games.

High: helped some low N7/CP pugs getting some hard-fought gold credits; not by carrying (not good enough for that anyway :) ), but by learning to keep moving, stay together, accept going down, and cleaning the area before reviving...

Low: I was joined in my efforts by two consecutive Reegar AIUs... starting to understand the annoyance many feel for this kit-weapon combo; while it could be a valuable team asset... well, let's just say it fits perfectly the needs of scoremongering lone wolves. Difficult to teach team play when one is around ;)

Low: My U/U/G lobby rolled Rippaz. Fortunately, I was playing the greatest anti-armor kit evah. GE/GPR.

High: Still outscored two Reegar AIUs. Felt like I needed a shower afterward... in addition to normal decontamination.
