I re did him as an Archer Assassin.....and I must say I like the results. reminded how much I liked my DA:O Archer Grey Warden. I know the AI would have gotten him killed as a dagger rogue, so just to give him a few runs with the crew I figured I'd try this. Might do Archer Assassin for my next Character. Good stuff.

I also made Cole an archer and had great results... personally, I felt that the safety of making him a ranged stealth character made up for any change in DPS. Less babysitting overall, except for when the AI occasionally got into melee range of enemies and decided to stay there (generally this happened in the early hours more than towards the end...). Plus, it worked well with his specialization, although I would have preferred an "Assassinate" power like in DA2.
Edit: Actually, I probably shouldn't complain about his spec... unlike Iron Bull and Blackwall (and possibly Varric?), his Focus power actually works regardless of weapon type.

The passives in the Assassin tree are good. With stealth I used the 12 shot Leaping shot and hit for so much, I was amazed.

Have you tried setting Stealth and Evade to "preferred" in his tactics? Once I did that he hardly ever died on Nightmare as a dagger rogue. I put guard on hit on one of his daggers as well. He use to die to Rage demon aoe all the time, and now his health hardly every dips below 75%. My only complaint is I can't get him to Mark of Death anything worth marking.. he always marks something then switches to a different target LOL.

Yeah I got him set up with those preferred abilities. To me he seems like an Archer, and Sera seems like the killer assassin.

Except the part where sera does nothing other then talk about arrows...loudly, while cole is legitimately able to disappear in the shadows.

DAI was my first PT as an archer in any game; I warmed up a bit before release with DA2 as an archer, but I tried it in Origins, and I found them absolutely blah and underpowered. Do you have suggestions?
Don't know if it matters, but I tried an archer Dwarf, since I never completed the Orzammar intro before, only noble, city/dalish elf, and Circle mage.

The Assassin passives are good enough to work with daggers and bows. Stealth is a good idea along with most of the archer tree. i didn't get poison. Evade would be good too. I never played a dagger rogue in any DA game. So I figured if I was gonna make use of Cole it would be an archer. Not to say I wont use V or Sera more.

You're right, archers in DA:O are pretty underpowered (and frankly somewhat boring). That being said there are two abilities in the archer tree that are absolutely incredible, Scattershot and Arrow Of Slaying, focus your stamina on using these too abilities, you might also occasionally use shatter shot as well, the rest of the abilites are frankly quite useless because their effects are ridiculously underwhelming considering how long it takes to fire them (critical shot is a bit decent early on though) and I suggest you just pick them up to just to reach Scatter shot and AOS. I recommend you use aim, and pick up the bard specialization with the song of valor( or courage, I forgot what it's called but it increases damage and crit and stuff), with both of them on and enough dex/cunning you'll end up critting on your every shot. Use a bow with Rapid Aim enchanment because you won't be using the sustain.
*Archers in Awakening though are pretty powerful, like REALLY powerful,
