I have noticed that there are several options for the followers in DAI and i have not been using them all. Plus i just need some help with correctly setting up a good party.

My main is a one handed warrior, i use abilities like Lunge and slash, Grappling chain, Mark of the rift when needed, War cry at the start of fights, Charging bull, Payback strike, Shieldwall and Combat roll. I like combat to be fast paced. Not too slow and with these abilities it's quite fun so far. And so far it seems to be doing its job too.

The ones NOT exactly doing their jobs are my followers, too many times now they easily die and i am 100% certain it's because of a faulty set-up, so to speak. Since i am a one handed warrior, i'll make sure to make my other warrior two handed. I don't really like to switch much to followers, so i'd like to set them up so they can handle the job themselves. Except of course for things like grenades and tonics now and then, cause they don't seem to use those automatically.

I'd like to know what abilities are recommended for Varric, Dorian, Sera, Cassandra, Cole, Vivienne, Blackwall, Iron bull, Solas. Also, what abilities of theirs should be set to preferred and enabled in the tactics? Also....i was told to go to behaviors and put Mana/Stamina % reserve: 20%. Healing potion reserve is 2 and Healing potion HP % threshold is 20%. Is this good?

Back to tactics. I decided to let my rogue defend a mage, so that when the mage is reviving someone or using barrier, he'll be defended, but so far this is not working too well. So what do i set 'Targeting behavior' to for warriors, rogues and mages?

That's basically it.

If you find your followers are dying often then you should probably focus on crowd control, defensive abilities, and aggro management.

A good idea is to give them all escape abilities for when they are in trouble. Invest in Fade Step for your mages (it's in the Winter tree), Combat Roll for your Warriors, and Evade (in the Stealth tree) for your rogues. Archers can get away with Leap Shot but it's not always reliable.

Give all your mages the basic Barrier ability (no need to fully invest in Spirit). Disable it by default if you'd rather control its usage yourself.

All your warriors should have War Cry. Disable it by default if you wish but always be ready to taunt off your squishies. Make sure your warriors and dual wield rogue (Cole typically) have block abilities. They use them automatically when being attacked one by one.

The only time you need to manually control your characters is when enemies are doing AOE attacks.
These include "Charge", "Whirlwind", "Dragon Breath" etc.. attacks.
The AI isn't programmed to be able to dodge indirect AOE abilities and while they always attempt to avoid persistent AOE ground effects they sometimes step on them if there is no short path so you should pause and direct them safely.

Also if you have your allies set up to attack whoever you are attacking, make sure they don't have their backs toward ranged attackers.

If you sheathe your weapon despite enemies being around, you are disengaging and this disables tactics. If enemies are still attacking you your allies will do nothing as long as you remain sheathed.

That's all there is to it really.

Oh I was just about to joke that it was amazing no one had chipped in with a dig about how rubbish the followers were, seems that predictability won the day, however...
OP, I'd advise you to open a thread in another of the sub forums, this one will just get clogged with people telling you how much better DA:O followers were.
I surprised it took as long as it did to be honest.

For Tactics, I recommend setting defensive abilities as Preferred; for Behavior, most recommend setting Follow to themselves. I also can recommend setting ranged NPC's to Follow the Warrior of choice. The rest that was posted seems good to me.
