On the net rigth now are circulating a set of rumours concerning the whole "Here lies the Abyss" plot path, stating that, in Bioware original plan, it was supposed to be the Hero of Ferelden who would revealed to be Hawke contact in the Grey Wardens instead of Stroud/Alistair/Loghain. It would later be forgotten due to the Warden implying to much of physical/personnal variations, unlike Hawke, and that it would be too difficult to take all these variations into account.

Now, apart from the idea that it would have been awesome to see all of the PCs at once in the fade, it made me thinking about the end of the quest and the sacrifice that has to be made. And I wonder, what if... ?

Yeah, what if, at the end of the quest, YOUR inquisitor was suddenly force to choose who, between YOUR warden and YOUR Hawke, which one would be left behind to fight Nightmare ? Take this choice into a whole new light, isn't it ? Is your choice would have been different ?...

See, in my party, after a short but not hard reflexion, I allowed Loghain to stay behind, partly because I found it rather poetic to finally give him the redemption my warden denied him 10 years ago for his acts in DAO, also because I think that even without a senior with them the orlesian warden could reconstruct themselves, but much more because after all he's been through I wanted to give MY Hawke a chance of living Happily Ever After with Merril.

But if this warden would be MY Cousland ? Damn, I don't know !! Would I had to break Merril's or Leliana's heart ? Would I consider my HoF to be sacrificable due to the joining gaining on him ? Or rather considering he has a lot more political weight than Hawke (he is the Hero of Ferelden, commander of the Grey and personnal friend of King alistair and Queen Anora after all), let the Champion dying himself ?

Now THAT would be a hard choice that could have left me in tears, I confess. What about you, guys ? If it would have been YOURS characters involved in here, what would you have done ?

If it were a choice between the HoF and Hawke?

I would choose to save the HoF each time, easy choice.

Would vary on a plathrough basis, but, for my main world state? probably sacrifice The Warden, they're dying of the taint anyway. Hawke deserves a break.

Hawke would have died no question. Only reason Hawke survived this time was because I had no attachment at all to Stroud, but my best friend said his choice was Allister or Hawke. I would shave chosen Allister, so I know I would have chosen my Warden without a thought.

The minute I played that quest I felt like "Yup, if the HOF was going to be in this, this is definitely where he was gonna show up." As much as I love my Hawke if it came down to her and Stephen Cousland... Hawke would've died a very heroic death.

I can't imagine how they would actually bring in the HoF. Would they be fully voiced? What kind of voice would they choose?? Can you imagine the outcry if the voice wasn't good enough? Yikes...

Honestly I just wanted to see him again. As long as it isn't half assed I've got no problem with The HOF returning. I'm getting worn out on new protagonists every game.

I think I would have done a Cassandra and thrown the controller up the wall and stormed off.

I think this was their biggest issue getting the voicing of the character right. They could have always put in a comprehensive CC to let us make our HoF the way we wanted but they wouldn't have had countless VA for a small part like that.

Leave the hof. She has a better chance of surviving.

Edit. Although I would be terrified of leliana shanking me after

Also, the hof would have to have text dialog. No voice :)

If the HoF was there, I'd probably save the Warden 90% of the time. I loved my canon Hawke that romanced Anders, but even so, I still sacrificed him when Alistair was with him in the Fade since Alistair was with my Warden together. Broke Varric's heart too, but there really wasn't any way I could be convinced to not sacrifice Hawke  :P

I saw a cool post on tumblr that said how awesome it'd be if that guy that just grunts and doesn't say anything in Bull's chargers was the HOF. Like you made your Warden at the beginning of the game or something and you were wondering why they wouldn't show up and then they show up in Bull's group midway through the game. Fun.

Not sacrificing Loghain however seems silly to me, since he should be going on his Calling regardless of events soon anyway and is an old warrior by the time of DAI. And we don't know Stroud, so sacrificing Hawke instead of him seems only a choice for those that never connected to their Hawkes, didn't play the game, or are committed to their roleplaying by doing what their inquisitor would do or want drama.

I'd probably play it differently on different world states, with different Inquisitors. But for my personal canon playthrough I may have had the Hero of Ferelden sacrifice himself, despite being more fond of the Warden than Hawke.

In part it would depend on Leliana's reaction though. She was the Warden's LI, so if she ends up completely broken by it I might feel too guilty to have that result be canon. Alternatively if her reaction was underwhelming, I might be more inclined to sacrifice Hawke to get the better 'Where's Hawke?" reaction from Varric. So I suppose for me Leliana's reaction would have to fall somewhere into the realm of appropriately sad and emotionally impactful, but not crossing over into soul-crushingly depressing.

Coudnt they like add a small character customisation to make your warden look like you remember him haha, and Have like 10 voice options, cause be real he would not require alloth of text.

Choosing between my HoF or my Hawke (canon two)... HoF hands down. Not even a debate. Sorry Isabela, but I felt more a connection to my HoF than I ever did Hawke.

I saved stroud numerous times because the Wardens need him. No one needs hawke, as much as I love her snark

I think I would almost always choose my Warden, even if I had owned DAII and therefore had created Hawkes I was attached to.

Yes, maybe the original plan was to have the HoF in the fade. But I also think the original plan was for Hawke to be the Inquisitor. So.... maybe we had HoF and Alistair/Loghain/Stroud. Choosing between HoF and Alistair would have been heartbreaking. Once again... Sorry Stroud!

The thing is if you save Stroud he doesn't stay in Orlais to help keep the Wardens there on the straight and narrow (since it says they are still at risk from Cory) but heads off to the HQ in the Anderfels, just as Hawke does, so the argument given that he is needed to rebuild was a bit redundant anyway.   Given he was getting on a bit and probably nearing his calling anyway, I prefer letting Hawke live - particularly after seeing poor Varric's reaction and have him comment on having to give the bad news to the LI, in this particular case, Fenris.    There just doesn't seem a strong enough reason to choose Stroud over Hawke and no emotional one.

It did occur to me that originally it was meant to be a choice between HoF and Hawke and that would certainly have made it far more difficult and I would probably have gone with the HoF more often than Hawke, just as I will probably save Alistair over Hawke.   I haven't used that version in the Keep yet where Alistair stays in the Wardens.     The HoF always felt much more my character than Hawke did with the individual backstories that provided plenty of scope to make the Warden your own.

I'd choose for the Inq to stay.  Seriously, the Inq's so bland compared to all the other Bioware characters I've played.  :(

Between the HoF and Hawke, though....I don't know.  I'd probably alternate each playthrough while experiencing heartache each and every time.

HoF or Hawke... is that a serious question?

HoF would stay, she'd kill that demon twice and march on the Black City
