like many, my choice between hawke or stroud was an easy decision to make, since we barely know stroud.  choosing between my cousland and hawke would be infinitely harder.  however, i actually feel closer to my hawke, since i've played through DA2 countless times (several of which were essentially the same hawke) and i haven't seen my cousland in months and i only had the one playthrough with her.

logic would dictate that as commander of the grey, she would be better off returning to the wardens and helping them rebuild and the local wardens will sorely need a leader to give them direction. my canon hawke is a mage, so i would assume that he'd have a better chance in the fade and (hopefully) making it back out alive (besides, my cousland is an archer and she'd run out of arrows eventually).

despite all this reasoning though, i still can't decide.  whoever i left in the fade would have either alistair or anders, plus their friends, mourning them and i can't bear the thought,

@OP:

This is what I wrote in my blog thread (see sig) after I played "Here Lies the Abyss" for the first time on Nov 26:

I also think Bioware chickened out. And that's very, very good. I'm convinced that at some point during development, the choice was designed to be between Hawke and whoever survived DAO with the priority being the Warden > Alistair > Loghain. That would not have gone well.

I think I would've uninstalled the game and sworn off Bioware games for life had that happened. And I think Bioware knew many would feel like that, especially after ME3, and that's why they didn't do it.

If the situation was different I might be okay with it, I wouldn't have been happy with either of my PC's dying in such a pointless way (I'll distract a giant monster for a few seconds by wacking it with my staff!).

No one hassles the HoF.

I would've sac'd Hawke, just as I did in my playthrough with Stroud. Not because I dislike the character (I actually adore sarcastic Hawke) but because it seemed the most dramatically appropriate course of action. I don't view it as the Inq made the call but that Hawke took it upon himself (kudos to the writing for making the choice interpretable that way). Sorry, Varric. :(

I'm glad to see there a lot of opinions about it. Apart for those who are either HoF fans or Hawke fans, you have to admit a choice like that would provide some headscratcher ; there is not really a better solution here, unlike with the Loghain/Alistair/Stroud scenario. Some of you may take the pragmatic approach (HoF is more useful than Hawke), other the sentimental one (I choose this because I prefer it) but that would not systematically tell wich character would more likely survive.

The HoF would be left to die and leliana would kill me when I returned to skyhold.

I would've been extremely annoyed to be tossed this choice (might as well go Ultimate Sacrifice if it's come down to this), but without hesitation, the Warden would stay behind, because the Wardens don't need anything but a swift kick in the ass.

The HOF would have killed that punk ass demon anyway. I bet Hawkes is still alive if you left her behind too.

It anyone chooses to sacrifice the HoF instead of Hawke if they were their choices.... I feel very bad for the HoF...

S/He could have died a hero, killing the archdemon, destroying the soul of some silly god of the past. Instead, S/He chicken out taking the offer of that selfish Morrigan (Get her laid or she will run off and not even help fight the archdemon) only to die to .... a silly Fade Spider?

That would be lame.

One possible benefit of picking the HoF is watching Leliana crack like an egg.

For me, I would sacrifice The Warden in a heartbeat.

She is already cracked in DAI.

Also, as a nod to Origin fans, the HoF has to ask the spider if s/he can get it a ladder, so it can climb off his/her back.

The HoF could probably beat the stuffing out of the Nightmare demon, but I wouldn't trust Bioware on it, so I'd feed the thing Hawke in a heartbeat and leg it just to cover my bases.

Imagine Morrigan's reaction... and imagine her telling  Kieran daddy got eaten by a giant fear spider.

They were right not to do it. Because it would mean that whatever your choices, one of your protagonists HAD to die. That's not right, so they had to give us a choice. That's why Shepard doesn't die in Red Ending and enough war assets. As it is, the Warden lives and Hawke lives, if you choose it, but both die if you choose Ultimate Sacrifice/leaving Hawke in the Fade.

This! :)

But no doubt they will be back having somehow survived in the fade.

Yeah, I've been hearing this rumour a lot, too.

Does also make me wonder about the outcome of Here Lies the Abyss. We all assume that whoever stays behind in The Fade is a goner. Sacrificing their life so that the Inquisitor can escape.

But that's still a big IF in my book. Unless we see them perish directly I'd not be writing that character off. I wouldn't be at all surprised if in the next game we see whoever was left behind break back out of the Fade and into the Waking World, at an opportune moment.

Knowing that originally it was planned for one of the User's own created characters to be doing this just makes me more certain that this will occur.

You know what would be hilarious:

If some time in the future, whoever we left in the Fade stepped out of it, seriously leveled up in badass, so that we all wished we had left our favorite of the two in the Fade in DAI instead of the one whose absense we would miss less.

I think I would like that.

I'm afraid it would have to be my Hawke, as much as I like her I never had that deep kind of connection I had with my HoF (who is married to King Alistair and looking for a cure so they can live happily ever after).  I actually wouldn't have agonized over the decision, like I didn't when it came to the Hawke/Stroud choice.  Bye bye Stroud, I can't face Varric/Bianca if I let you live.  Now, the one I would have had trouble with is if it had been Hawke or Alistair, it wasn't because my Alistair was king, but in a subsequent playthrough I might go for it, just to see how long it takes me to make the choice and how bad it makes me feel.

Yeah. My wife had her canon playthrough of Origins as a female elf mage, romancing Alistiair. She kept him off the throne to keep that romance going. She worked HARD.

But she also feels she connects more with DA2 as a game.

So you can imagine how well this choice went down. :)

It would depend on which HoF if matched to which Hawke. On my main playthrough though... gah, it's difficult. On the one hand, poor Zevran. On the other, poor Isabela and Carver.

I'd probably have to play it twice, one playthrough with The Warden surviving, and the other with Hawke surviving.

Then I'd go and cry forever.

Oh no!  I feel for her.  I actually restarted my Origins game as I wanted Alistair to be king and I wanted to be queen when it came down to it (I originally started as an elf mage).  My head says that Hawke should live but thinking of that giant spider swooping down on Alistair .... it hurts!

Since i feel more connected to hawke than to the hof I think I would have sacrificed the latter.

Wait, no, if the game had forced me to make this choice I would have closed it, thrown it out of my pc and never played it again.
