Pants/boots color bug

Anyone else encounter this and know of a fix? I've changed in and out of the armor, reloaded, changed zones, and nothing seems to work. 9/10 times, the legs are a light brown color.

I'm not sure if its the same thing that you're talking about, but playing as a rogue, when I look at armor in the crafting screen or when I switch between sets, it will often look black or navy, but when I think go outside it looks brown. I was thinking that it was a lighting issue.

You can turn your mesh quality down to medium if you're playing on PC and truly can't stand it (the effect requires high or ultra shaders), but the rest of the game will look worse as a result.

But it's wildly inconsistent (in terms of which areas it occurs in) and really aggressive (it only takes a few steps for the color to change completely). BioWare hasn't said anything about what they intended or why it works the way it does, so we just have to guess at it.

It's normal (whether it's intended or not, nobody can say for sure). It should only affect leather and cloth below the waist, and only in certain areas on certain terrain.

Yeah, if you turn that setting down below "high", you'll get the ultra-shiny helmet-hair to contend with instead. Which, I think, is worse.

Mike Laidlaw said that it was to simulate dirt during your travels. He showcased it in one of the streams prior to the game coming out.
I think it looks horrible and is not really working correctly. All it seems to do is drain the color from the lower half of whatever armor you are wearing. Working as indended? Hope not.
Either way, it should be something you can turn off, similar to blood splatter.

Since this was described as intentional, I doubt this is going to change sadly.

Yes, this "feature" is horrible and should be either removed or given a toggle.
It ruins the look of the armor, and having to save and reload before each cutscene to avoid looking like a hobo is annoying.

Basically it just means you hardly ever get to see the proper color of your armor. Which is sad.

I agree, it doesn't really come across as dirt. To me it looks like they put a beige gradient from the boots up to below the waist. It doesn't bother me that much though.

My inquisitor must constantly roll around in dust/dirt while in Skyhold then. My pajamas always have that faded beige look. (joke).

OMG even in Skyhold, with the black skyhold outfit retexture mod, it still happens. Top half is completely black and the pants and boots are basically like khaki's. It's so ugly.

I want to get rid of it it really annoys me that feature.

Yes, it should simulate the dirt on your armor - the funny thing is, my Inquistior was in a party with Cassandra, Sera and Vivienne... and only my Inquistor got dirty within seconds. Cassandra - I'm not sure but Vivienne, she always had her wonderful black boots... must be a mage trick. And Sera - maybe some elvish thing (and now she will hate me for that...) ![]()

Popular opinion is that it's meant to simulate dirt and dust buildup on leather and cloth.
But it's wildly inconsistent (in terms of which areas it occurs in) and really aggressive (it only takes a few steps for the color to change completely). BioWare hasn't said anything about what they intended or why it works the way it does, so we just have to guess at it.
I think this makes the most sense from my observations as well. To add another example, if you are outside and notice this effect and then run through some water, it goes away for a short time because the water washed off the dirt. Then you get dirty again later on.
I think that the problem lies in the fact that, as you say, the effect doesn't appear to be consistent among areas or material of the armor.

I really like the feature. It adds realism. If I'm running around in dirt and mud I'd like to see it on my boots and armor.
Some dirt on the shoes I might not mind, but having my whole legs covered in so much dust that you can't even see their original color anymore from three steps through a grassland is too much.
