So the Dragon Age twitter page released a stat on who is making what as their Inquisitor and seriously the numbers actually surprised me. I know that in rpg's I prefer to create a female character. I still will play a male character but usually my cannons are usually female.

I am not sure if that is the doing of the current gaming industry as a whole. We have a lot of games that portray a male protagonist and not many options to choose a female character. We have Lara Croft as the Tomb Raider. But then now we have Nathan Drake which is taking the spotlight from a strong female character protagonist..

I feel like I am in the minority because I choose to play as female than the male in games. The chart below says that PC gamers make the majority of gamerss that choose the female role. Now I don't know the specific numbers for each platform so it would be interesting to see that.

Tell me what you think :)

Human Male Mage PS4.

Everyone can play the games the way they want but I don´t get why some male players always create females as their main characters in RPGs and MMORPGs. For some MMORPGs (see Lineage 2) I understand why: ****** ****** ******. But for other games I can´t think of a reason. Well, for fun, and since that´s a subjective reason and everyone is a different world then that´s not something I can or have to truly understand, but I always think "Why would I want to create a female character to portray myself (an heterosexual male) in a videogame"

In Inquisition´s case, Solas romance, being race and gender gated, would be a good reason to create a female elf character, but for most videogames I don´t really see any reason for me to do it. For me, RPGs are about "what would I do if I would be in this world and in this position" so I prefer to play as a male character.

I don't see the point of self-insert. That's why I always play as human instead of qunari. I can never get the horns to match mine

The percentage is a bit bigger than I thought it'd be.  Still like to see it higher.

I loved Croft and the whole exploration gameplay.  Drake irritates the p*ss outta me, though.  His "humorous" wise cracks never fail to make me want to pound his face in with a mallet.

I don't generally portray myself in games. I already play a human male 24/7 IRL, and don't want to do so in games.

my first DA:I character was a female qunari warrior, and I figure about 75% of all the characters I make are female too.

So far in just in this game alone. I have 2 female human mages. One female rogue Elf, One female mage elf, one rogue female dwarf. And one mage human male.

So I have 5 females and one male character. I am perfectly fine with that!

Same here except for the male. Figure I'll have to make one just for the Cass romance.

For me personally I'd rather listen to a female voice for 130 hours than a man's.

Its just how I role.

So far I have a female Qunari warrior and a female Dalish mage.

Nice to see the percentages are coming closer together at least.

I like to maintain balance in my world state. My current canon world is balanced (male warden, female Hawke), so I'm toying with both male and female inquisitors for my canon.

It's just a weird obsession of mine, seems odd to have all the heroes be a single gender.

Yes, that does mean I find the real world odd - or at least the way it's recorded in history books. ;)

Why is it important though? I don't really care if some dude in wherever plays as a male toon or a female toon. The numbers does not reflect reality of the gender of the gamers since not everyone is playing their own gender.

Also set gender games are worse than char gen games imo but that is because I prefer my own characters but I think that it should be up to the developers to do what mian character they want and not care about what others think since the sales numbers will represent if they did a good or a bad job.

PS3 (human warrior gay) female Inq represent.

Warden was straight female elf mage, Hawke was default appearance straight male rogue. Diversity in character creation is good.

Hope to play dwarf or Qunari as canon PC in the next one.

I want people to play who they want to play.  My interest in the number is that a higher female character percentage in games like these might open those options in other games in the future.  For instance, I would've loved to play as a woman in The Witcher or Deus Ex worlds.  Though I know that those are set characters and that's fine, but if a higher percentage of people played female characters, maybe they would've at least considered the option during development?  (Probably not those particular games but still)

A lot of game companies aren't interested in publishing a game with a female lead because they believe it won't sell well.   I simply wish that weren't the case.

There was an article about a game on The Escapist website that had female leads and no one wanted to publish it unless they changed them to men.  Doing so would've changed the whole dynamic of the story and it would've been completely not what the developers wanted to do.

Most important is the character the dev's feel is the best for the role.  Always - I'm not saying they're not, If a male characters who they have in mind I've no objection.  I've played countless games with male leads and they were great leads  I'm just talking about games that wants the player to make choices and shape a world to have the option to include a gender option as well.   Plus, I never said that only woman play woman and men play men in games as that's completely false and untrue.

Yes and that makes the % of the post unusable in the female/male gamer % debate. I agree that people shouldn't shy away from creating female character leads because of fear of decreased sales. A good story is a good story and if the protagonist needs to be a certain gender for the story to work or make sense or if the story they want to tell is one with a male char or female in the lead then I'm fine with whatever.

They're both amazing, but I'll still give the slight advantage to BroShep. Mark Meer is a legend.
