Everything the people above me already said, but also:

All the greys, in politics and justice alike. Galaxy-spanning criminal gangs weren't always bad, sometimes you had to negotiate with them, and possibly even found some of them likable. Politicians rarely being straight forward with their intentions, but having their own agendas. It was messy, but it was brilliant how it all meshed together.

The setting and atmosphere is what initially drew me into Mass Effect when the first game came out all of those years ago.   The characters, music, gameplay, and overall story arc is what kept me coming back.
