Also, I'm always surprised when I hear how many people play only as humans. I rarely play as a human character if I'm given the choice to play as another race. Similar sort of argument here that some have about only making female characters: There's human protagonists everywhere, why wouldn't you take the opportunity to be something different?

I'm an unapologetic human-exclusive player. Frankly, the body models for the other races have a bit of an uncanny valley effect for me which when I'm looking at them makes me feel anywhere between odd (dwarves) to downright unsettled (elves).

Plus I'm just frankly disinterested in the non-human cultures and lore.

I'll play non humans protags when I think the story fits.. DAO was a good example of being very open ended. I hate it here. They come off as random meddlers. lol. Well, maybe not elves (but even then, their presence at the Conclave is nothing but meddling too).

Well I think in general Thane' character was success to female audience but of cource he's not for everyone's liking.

Well, I'm not a woman, but I am attracted to men and Thane has always done it for me. The deep voice, pouty lips and big, sad eyes are like the holy trinity of "let me hold you and make everything better."

Thane is actually the only F/M romance I've ever managed to finish. Normally I can't get into them. (Although it might have partially been that I knew FemShep would get back with Liara in the next game.)

My thoughts exactly.

DAO would've been the time for me to vary it up beyond seeing the origins stories, but the body types were still rather lame for elves. Better than the **** we have here though. But I wanted to be more fit looking, like the elf in the concept art.

Concept-Rogue.png

And I actually got closer to this as a human, so that's what I went with. Also, Cousland's revenge plot... Cannot pass that up.

I have to say that a race full of lizard-frogs who keep having flashbacks isn't quite what I'm looking for. He's better than Jacob but I'm not a big fan of Thane.

It also seems like the romance that appealed to me the most was the same one that appealed to many men- Kaidan. I really don't think this can be divided into "this is what women want" and "this is what men want", we're pretty much talking about two halves of the entire world population (at least if we mean biological sex) and it's not possible to say that "this half generally wants this" and "this half generally wants that". Some women will prefer Thane, some will prefer Garrus, some would prefer Miranda.

Funnily, in one of the concept books.. I think I recall that Thane first started as bird like. Like peacock-ish or something.

Not sure that's better for you or not :P

I don't care about anyone but Jack.

That...does not help. I think I actually prefer the lizard-frog style over a Thane with colorful feathers in his bum. :P

Jack was definitely awesome. I might've romanced her despite the hair and all the tats, but I felt guilty trying it, to be honest. It seemed like she needed a friend more than a lover. A genuine one. So I stuck to being bffs and staying faithful to Ash/Liara usually. Went with Miranda several times, didn't really like it. Didn't like her, but was curious.

It only works if you're as crazy as she is. Which my Shepard was. Heh

There's a reason why Vega calls you Loco later...

Renegade for life, yo, but nah. Just wasn't for me to do with her. She seemed waaay too damaged. Lucky you though, she turned really hot in ME 3  And not in a girly way either. Still looks badass.

The beginning of my statement was really media in general, but yea it just highlights my point that thinking of advertising for men and women individually is faulty.

However, that also goes for the idea that creating deep relationships if you want or creating your story would be more appealing for women than it would men. Maybe it wouldn't attract the COD squad, but those guys aren't likely playing this much anyway. The guys that are drawn to this series, like the women, are here for story and characters.

Those trailers are generally super misleading anyway for dragon age.

If the product is intended to certain kinds of girls then it might be marketed in a girly way. I don't see any problem here. Of course I might not buy it but then again I probably don't fit in to that group. But those who are in that group might want to buy that product more because of the way it was marketed. But if we talk about DA then I would see that creating and marketing good story and characters appeals to both women and men. But it may be that good story and characters are more important to women than to men. Women might want to see female PCs in trailers but if you show them then it might scare the men off. Or that advertisements are concentrated on how you can customize your character in the beginning of the game and in game. But marketing that kind of game is hard because if you have a very diversive group then creating advertisements that appeal to all of them is quite difficult.

I always play a human but was going to play an elf in DAI, for the first time...until I saw the elf body...no way! Unless that gets changed for the better, I'll stick to humans.

So far I've played one female human and now I'm playing a male human. I've killed 20 dragons (21 because I had to rekill one dragon since it wouldn't officially die).

Some questions for the sake of questions:

What about current marketing, other than the gender of the protagonist, doesn't appeal to women? Why doesn't it? What kind of marketing does appeal to women?

If current marketing appeals to men and not women, does that mean that men and women, on average, just want different things? If so, is it wrong to make games with the things that appeal just to only one demographic? If so, then why?

Is "separate but equal" okay for video games/marketing (e.g., most companies make games aimed specifically at either men or women)? If not, is it okay for other products, such as shampoo, deodorant, shoes, etc. to be "separate but equal?" If so, what's the difference?

I usually don't watch trailers or other advertisement material because I can't find information that I want from there. But because I know what I want then I can use google to find games where I can play female characters. Romance is always a good thing. I also check games where the protagonist is a male but I'm not that interested in them. Then I usually watch a review and/or someone playing the game. Then I decide should I buy the game or not. With DA and ME series I know what to expect so I can just pre-order the game without thinking too much.

It's not wrong to make a game to only one demographic. DA series already contains content which women might like such as good story, characters and romances. There can still be tough boss fights and the gameplay can still be good. When the game contains all of these properties then it can appeal to both women and men. But marketing this game to women who don't play is difficult, because you see the male PC and you don't get the impression that you can play female characters and you can play this game even if you haven't played other games before.

These are bit hard to answer cause to certain amount of women the marketing already works: female gamers. Maybe the problem is to how to rise amount of female gamers, how to get more women to play games which is much harder than getting women who already are into games to get intrested in particular case.

I think some ways game developers could better market their games would be simply doing game content where they considered women as well and then market these. Male and female gamers intrest aren't necessarily different either, I believe many things are same that we want. However it's important to game developers to listen female gamers as well in things they want and don't like if they want to attract more female gamers to play their games. Some easy things are including good female characters to games, turn down ridiculous sexy armors and treat women characters respectfully, let them play as female characters etc. Other than that female gamers in general like good story and good gameplay in games like everyone else.

I don't really like exclusion and I think too many products are gendered. There is no need to many shampoos for example to be gendered at all. There might be some smells women (in general) don't want that men (in general) want and in other way but that doesn't mean all products should be gendered especially if same product is sold with two different packagins just for different genders.

I think games even more should be more inclusive than exclusive. Cause otherway around it easily goes in the way where females are forgotten completely and most games women would love to play like DAI would be just done with male protagonist etc. although there is no need, the game works well for both gender of gamers.

Problem there is seems to be that what female gamers want doesn't meet what game devs think we want in cases like these. Of cource female gamers are all different too but I'm talking what we in general want. For example for case where I think what devs thought female gamers wanted met what they in reality wanted was with Thane since at least I have heard him and his whole race was created in female gamers in mind.. and they really got me with that one :P

Yeah, the Thane romance had girl bait all over it. Stuff like that makes me head for the hills Vakarian.

KAIDAN :P <3

Funny enough Kaidan was actually the only male I wanted to romance, period. Lucky for me he was available to BroShep by ME3 :D But I'm not even sad I couldn't have Garrus, Vega, or OMG I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT JOKER NO I TAKE IT ALL BACK Shep x Joker 4-ever *weeps*

Baahhh, can't do it. I don't know what's wrong with me, but unlike a lot of other guys, I can't stand her. First, she's just too obviously meant for the male protag, and they didn't even try to hide it, lol. I know I'm gonna get whiners, but I'm sorry. That outfit believe it or not was a turn off for me.

It's really ridiculous for anyone to be fighting in something like that, and her voice puts me to sleep, lol. I didn't care about her story much. "Boo hoo I'm perfect. Daddy gave me everything." zzzzzz

Yes I'm oversimplifying it, but I'm sure no one wants my life story, same as I didn't want hers, lol. Anyway, more power to you of course. But Miranda just wasn't for me.

He's another one whose voice puts me to sleep, lol. Which I guess if I was a chick... (or gay), this would work for him... lol.

I did like him well enough though, especially in 3. Made for a better spectre I think. But, Garrus is my ultimate bro. Sorry dude.

Garrus, and Wrex. Grunt may as well pile up in there too.

Nah we are just individuals like male gamers as well (although some of them sometimes seem to want to appear like geths with consensus when it comes to romances and attractiveness of female characters ^^;)

I only played DAO, for the first time, in July. Played 3 characters. Then I played DA2, 3 times. And now I'm here, playing DAI. (I'm a completionist so those games can take a lot more hours to finish for me than for a lot of people).

I know nothing about Thane, except for what I read and saw on the Wiki page. I can't imagine wanted to romance Thane at this point, but I do realize how voice acting and a good story can change a person's mind. I guess I'll have to visit Youtube in order to see what the attraction is with Thane.

BTW, I'm female and I love good battles, good stories, and challenges. I can't stand huge boobs and skimpy armor/clothing. There comes a point where too much of the skimpy armor/clothing can over shadow the good story and other good things, for me. That is where modding is valuable. It allows each of us to tailor our game to better suit each of us. I loved modding Oblivion, Skyrim, and the first two DA games. I esp love mods that actually add quests and more story to the games.
