How would people know that without playing the game first?

Same as I did, reading, friends and so on. I imagine a lot more people in this day and age come through here than you think, even if they just lurk like I did up until recently.

Well. The BSN doesn't really reflect the actual fanbase. We are just a small, very vocal, dysfunctional part of the fanbase.

Don't forget mentally unstable, lol.

Nah it's balanced out by the horrible male elf body and freakishly large head that drives a lot of would be elfers away.

I am totally like that about the female too. I keep trying to make the head smaller in the character creator. Not that I must have a "mostly human" look (I adore qunari for example), but it looks too strange, especially if i compare with my DAO elf, or even DA2 ones.

I'm playing through it now to romance Solas and experience it as an elf, but especially in Infamous Inquisitor Pyjamas do I find the proportions odd... :)

I don't like surprises. I know all about the game before I play it. I don't mind happy surprises but I'm not up for having heartbreak in a video game. Although, knowing what I know about Solas and how the game goes concerning him, if the elven bodies are ever fixed, I'll play my first non-human. I'll play her as very suspicious of Solas (and he does give reasons to be suspicious) so when the breakup time arrives, my PC won't be completely surprised it happens.

That's pretty much what feel many " casual gamers " actually, those who play once or two times with DA. That doesn't mean that hardcore gamers can't feel the same, or that as a casual gamer you can't play the opposite gender or both gender. It's just more a trend in their group than with the hardcore fans.

My brother is a casual gamer of DA, he never wanted to consider playing a female pc, he has just no time to play Dragon age several times, he has other favorite games to play, so he goes with what he identify with for his only playthrough as always, his gender. He did the same with Skyrim, Oblivion.

i know casual female players, who play once and only play as guys.

I thought I was the only one who noticed that the elf female looks like a bobble head.

It's awesome that Bioware is sharing these statistics with us. It's actual evidence of what the fan base is like, and it will be beneficial to the industry as a whole. If anything, this will encourage other game companies to include more options when it comes to gender (and race if they share it) in games.

LOL Typical EA marketing padding bullshit.

I think I've made about 30 inquisitors but I've only played through once.  And most of them didn't even get to Haven.

And now we know why there isn't a way to change your character's face once you start the game!

But what does that have to do with the gender ratio? I imagine that male and female Inquisitors would be equally likely to be instantly abandoned because they look fugly under the in-game lighting.

You know, women like those things, too...

Listen to Panda; she knows best  ^_^

I was talking in general. If we think about female gamers as a group and compare them to male gamers we can see that women gamers in general value different things than male gamers. I would say that in general female gamers value more story, characters and relationships than male gamers. It is possible that there are women who don't care about story or characters as much as gameplay or boss fights. People can still value boss fights and gameplay while they still like story and characters. I can forgive bad gameplay if the story and characters are good. I can play a game which gameplay is the best that there can be but the story and characters are weak but I don't consider it as good as the game with good story and characters and possibly bad gameplay.

Because I'm pretty sure many people rolled male elves and then realized how broken their bodies looked and rerolled female.

Honestly though you are only testing for one variable. This argument would only fly, for instance, if the sex of video game characters was equally represented across all games. You also don't take into account that the MP experience is extremely hostile towards women; therefore, you don't see as many women playing FPS like Halo or COD.

Women, men, blacks, whites, little kids (**** them) and your mother.

Multiplayer is hostile to everyone, lol, and is not for the faint of heart. And if you're one of those people that think anything even remotely sexual is sexual harassment... then....

Spoiler

You're gonna have a bad time... LOL... A very bad time.

I'm not sure do I follow you. What variables are you talking about?  Do you mean that if you could choose your gender in games or there would be more female PCs in FPS then you can make conclusions what games women really want to play? Because women can choose to play male characters in games even if there are female PCs available.

I don't play MP so I can't really comment on that. I'm just not interested in it. That is my reason.

I mean the playing field isn't equal. Imagine if the majority of characters in FPS games were female. You start up COD and 90% of the NPCs are female, and your character is female, too. Imagine also that in a COD MP game, women dominated the airways. They made sexist comments towards any male player who dared to speak up. The entire culture of COD MP centered around female gamers getting together, having a great time, and occasionally taking verbal pot shots at the minority male players.

In that scenario, you would very likely discover that more women played COD (a FPS game that emphasizes strategy and teamwork over story and character) than men.

Actually I don't want the majority of the characters to be female. I don't believe that is the reason why women don't want to play FPS.  Sometimes I play FPS but because they are so linear and I can't affect on the story or the characters I usually don't like them that much. Because in the end FPS is the game where you shoot things and a lot. The gender doesn't mean so much in them than in RPGs.

I have been thinking how much it means to me to play female characters. Would I play more different games if I could play female characters instead of male characters? I think I would still prefer story, characters and romances. I would still prefer a game where I could choose a romance while playing male PC over FPS with a female PC. because there is so many games with male PC it's nice to play female characters for a change but if the situation would be different then I might want to play more male PC.

I believe that many women don't play MP because of the reasons you described. Although I believe many women still will create a male character and still play MP if they want to play it. You could get an impression that more men play MP than females but actually you can't know that for sure. But I think majority of people playing them are men. So only reliable way to know what games female prefer to play is to make study about it.
