Welcome to the completely unauthorized and unwanted Darkspawn Ally discussion thread. If you are interested in civil discussion of THE CORRUPTION OF EVERYTHING YOU HO-I mean, a legitimate darkspawn ally, we encourage you to join our cult! He's surprisingly sophisticated, has a whole bunch of magical enchantments meant to inhibit the spread of his Blight, and he keeps to himself and takes many other precautions as not to frighten people. Hoo-rah for legitimate darkspawn ally!

And for those who want a Darkspawn Romance, yes, you can experience the Taint, the Grundle, the Fleshy Fun Bridge.*

*Cards Against Humanity made me do this.

But what if we want him to rub his Taint on everything?

...Yeah, I'll just see myself out.

Still waiting to see more from the intelligent darkspawn. Guess the Architect was just chilling the past few games.

in my headcanon for my warden when he starts his search for the "cure" although I believe that it is a partial truth, he tries to find a way to stop the last remaining archdemons, and as a party member the darkspawn messenger from awakening ("Herald")joins him.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Architect return, in DLC maybe... he seems far too important to just sweep under the rug and get just a passing mention. Then again he might be, since I'm willing to bet a lot of people killed him off in Awakening. Weeee shaaaall seeeeeee.

As far as a darkspawn companion/romance goes...

-snip-

I knew people were going to ask about it, so I just went with the flow and had some fun with it. Nothing serious.

I would love to see the Messenger again! He was awesome.

Only bad thing is he still kind of spreads the blight everywhere he goes. Maybe we can put him in a hazmat suit.

It's okay, we can just tell Sten to fall in line or we'll feed him to a dragon and he'll approve.

In all seriousness, I would be down with an intelligent darskpawn companion, but I want to stress not the Architect or something like it.  Some things are just a little too "big" narratively to work as a companion.

I agree with not having the Architect, since it's dependent on previous player choice. Now a Disciple is what I'm interested, one of the Architect's before the Architect was "shut down" (notice I didn't say kill, per say) in DAO: Awakening. This Disciple might have spent ten years sentient now, and during that time he's learned about the world around him. He tries to read, but the books eventually rot away, so he's on constant rotation between books so his Blight doesn't ruin them so quickly.

It's one of my most charming attributes... failing to come across as sarcastic on the internet without the use of smileys. :D

I'd say go with The Messenger.  If you defend Amaranthine and set him free afterward, the epilogue establishes that he stays on the surface and becomes sort of a wandering hero.  If you defend Vigil's Keep it's assumed he goes back to the Architect, but who says he doesn't end up staying on the surface and just doesn't get mentioned?  Or that he doesn't come back to the surface later?  Obviously this runs aground on the players that killed him, but perhaps make him an optional companion based on that choice.

Why is this called the cult of lightspawn??

I agree. His epilogue slides were fascinating. Although I do hate for things to be retconned, I feel like keeping the Messenger around is worth a retcon. Most people probably don't even remember him, unlike the Architect.

Although, I suppose they could easily just give him a new name that he adopted, and make it ambiguous as to whether or not they were the same individual. Presumably the Architect 'uplifted' more than a few intelligent darkspawn.

As interesting as he is, I'm generally against retcons that alter player choice, when one of the major points of your game is the ability for the player to make choices.  If you do it, there needs to be an internally consistent "out" that doesn't require straining credulity.  Your workaround would work nicely, though.

If you opt to have him killed, does it show on-screen?  Especially if you have him fight with you first?  They could always say he got away.

One theory based on what Armaas said in Awakening, about being promised "protection," is that they can choose not to spread the blight.  Possibly the Awakened can make a conscious effort not to, but it wouldn't surprise me if certain "special" ones, like the Architect, Corypheus, and even archdemons (who probably aren't going to want to) are the only ones with that power.

Huh.  I'd always read Armaas' protection deal as just your typical "we won't rip off your face and eat it in front of you" deal.  I'd never really thought about it as protection from the blight, but that's a really interesting idea.  Good thought.

Like minds all, regarding being against player retcons at least. There were undoubtedly other Disciples that belonged to the Architect, and I believe that's our best chance of a darkspawn companion right there. Again, I still want to know what people think about what I've said. He has enchantments meant to slow the Blight, can't stay in one place for too long, and tries to read.
