Was Hawke originally the Inquisitor all along?

The thing is that the role of the inquisitor could have been either hawke or HoF. They could easily jump in and it would made no difference

Actually the Inquisitor couldn't be the HoF since the HoF sometimes dies at the end of DA:O.

DA:2 suggests that Hawke would be the Inquisitor. It wouldn't make sense for DA2 to begin in medias res the way it did unless Hawke was going to be the protagonist of the next game as well.

Thing is, Bio doesn't really ever write ahead too much. Even if they intended to bring Hawke back in DA3 at the time DA2 was released, it's highly unlikely that they had a firm idea of what they were going to do with him when they did bring him back. And whatever ideas they had for that return had gone away before Legacy shipped, back when Exalted March was still going to happen.

I likely would have skipped the game if Hawke had been the Inquisitor.

I can't imagine my Hawke being the Inquisitor. It wouldn't have suited him. I'm a big fan of his but I'm glad we got a new protagonist. In fact, I'm a big fan of starting every game with a new character. The HoF played her part, Hawke played his, and so on. I loved Mass Effect, but for me the entire-whole-universe-revolves-around-this-one-awesome-person thing began getting a little long in the tooth by ME3 (as did playing the HoF during Awakening).

Ha, according to some here the series still revolves around the HOF despite him being absent for 2/3 games.

but i agree with you.

Weren't a lot of the details of Exalted March absorbed into Inquisition? I remember the Temple of Mythal being mentioned as a reconfigured area. Could be the original concept for Inquisition had a very different plotline.

Yeah talking about Hawke in the current setting of DAI is pretty much pointless.

It would have made interesting baggage to tote around when the Inquisition attempted to gain favor. No matter your choice in DA2 (and it should matter) there would be thousands who'd blame you. Imagine having crazy Anders hanging around still and trying to gain Templar trust--or Chantry trust for that matter.

I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't the original plan: provide a continuing hero. Then DA2 disappointed so many people that Hawke became tainted by the memory.

I just wished that Hawke could have helped me take down Cory. He really wanted to deal with him but then never gets the chance.

Yeah, Hawke getting shipped off to Weisshaupt bothered me a lot, just as much as how they can be unceremoniously offed in the Fade?

You'd have thought that thought someone who has racked up victories against the Arishok, Meredith and Corypheus (who only survived because he soul-surfed) would have been a huge asset to have in the Inquisition, even as just an agent?

Instead Hawke is forced to play messenger for a task that any of the surviving, non-crazy Wardens should have been left to carry out? It kinda seemed like a contrived, really ham-fisted way to get them out of the story? If they really didn't want Hawke's presence to interfere with the Inquisitor's story, what was the point of even having them appear and not just having them be referenced as doing something cool offscreen, like the Warden?

Hawke definitely should have been there during the final battle to provide some closure to the story they began in Legacy, especially because they had such a personal stake in wanting to take down Corypheus?

It's another reason the ending seems so disappointing, especially after the massive, epic build up of the entire game until that point? In Origins and DA2, during the the final battle you had a ton of characters join in to help fight the Archdemon and Meredith? Yet in Inquisition, with the stakes much higher and a boss who has repeatedly attempted to destroy the world, you have a mediocre battle with only a tiny squad? It really should have been an epic battle with all hands on deck or at least a few Inquisition members present to help you fight Corypheus?

I've been think about this lately and, as other people, I'm starting to miss Hawke  :( (sarcastic Hawke, more especifically) and it's true, she would had fit perfectly in the Inquisition plot. The idea of a new PC in every installment has some benefits, but I enjoyed having Shepard around for the whole trilgoy, it made care more about her than about any other PC in a BW game, and the truth it's I'm starting to think that I'd have liked something like that for DA too. And I have no trouble with the Inquisitor, but I liked Hawke much more  :( even if the RP felt very limited, but again, so it did with Shepard and I got super attached to her... I'm missing a lot DA2 in general, lately  :(

Hawke as the Inquisitor would have been fitting and awesome
(reusing Corypheus as a major villian would be more understandable etc, same with Varric as a companion, Hawke solving the Mage templar war would be fitting etc.)

as much as Hawke haters and race fanatics don't want to see it DA I's story is basically made for Hawke its just such a shame that Bioware dropped their plans and instead
we got the lamest and most boring Bioware protag ever

The Inquisitor is also the most limited (regarding RP) oh the irony (people whined about Hawke because of that)
but of course since you can choose different races (pure fanservice) its all forgotten

I think that having Hawke as the Inquisitor would have been a mistake. You would be stuck with one character to play as and Hawke has plenty of haters, so that would have effected sales for sure. Where Bioware failed was having Hawke either die in the fade or shipped off to Weisshaupt. The latter doesn't even make sense, Hawke is no Warden and even blames them to a degree so why would he leave with them?

What Bioware should have done was have Hawke at the Inquisitor's side in the final battle with Corypheus. When Corypheus is almost dead it goes to a cutscene having Hawke deliver the blow that brings Corypheus to his knees and then the Inquisitor opens a rift inside of him finishing him off. After words Hawke returns to Kirkwall with Varric and Blackwall under goes the joining and survives. He leaves with the Wardens to Weisshaupt finally becoming what he wanted to be. That would have been an amazing end to the game. Instead we got what we got.
