Can't you specify that with the materials you use to craft the item? I can't remember and I'm at work so I can't test it out. :P

Correct, the material effects do change appearance in most cases with a modest change to improve that aspect -some still don't work. But there are errors in the crafting system where attributes are often wrong - there has been a feeble attempt to fix some issues, but it requires a rather large DLC to correct - still TBD.

I only recently got into DA after Watching my girlfriend playthrough Origins, Origins-Awakenings, and DA2 and what initially drew me in were the cutscenes.... Then I started playing Origins after she was done and am now on my 13th run through. I also picked up all the DA Novels and the Boxed sets from Green Ronin Publishing and thought wow when a DA3 comes out it will be awesome!!  Though I do admint Im not as keen on DA2 as DAO and put DAO-A below DA2. Be that as it may, I have tried to get into DAI but after 100 hrs  and in the Draconogolist Quest was what really made me shelve the game for an undefined time (I was clearly far away from the abyssal high dragon and they made it a quest to complete!-should have had the dragon attack instead on laying down the 5th meat trap. IMO) . Though for specificty sake when I say DAO I exclude DAO-awakenings.

What an rpg allows and this comes from the pen and paper side of my gaming knowledge is CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT in that I take the basic framework of a character and go my own way with it. What I mean by this is that as a mage in DAO I can essentially choose all the support abilities and non of the active combat spells which is where DA2 and DAI went- combat mage. (F'in PERIOD) Likewise with the Warrior and Rogues similar options available in DAO not so in DA2 and since I havent played DAI as Warrior or Rogue they shall remain as TBD. I also liked the Skill options in DAO slick talking rogue and a kleptomaniacal mage, warrior that knew herbalism-you betcha (all Character development).

DAI as an open world concept is great but it is lifeless and made lifeless by having to kill creatures for crafting materials.

In terms of Storyline, Origins is truly great, with DA2 a far second  and DAO Awakenings a farther third and the DLC entertaining short filler between each. This  and with the novels led me to believe that the DA3 (DAI) would focus on the Mage/Templar War   and instead we get Coryphy-fish <_<. I mean how cool would it be to create your character as a mage/rogue/warrior and then with the keep have the user set all their choice with the last being "where is your allegeince: MAGE CHECKBOX or TEMPLAR CHECKBOX" then in the MMO everybody is grouped by sub allegiences (ie mages have loyalist, aequetarians, isolationists, etc) for rogues (be they dwarves or not) there would be the option to be carta members, warriors could have the blackstone irregulars, and etc.

I do like that in DAI i could play a Qunari. but with the inability be qun-loyal or tal-vashoth that kinda put a damper on things.  I do feel that there should be more party banter while questing or at least comment on how the quest could go (if it was a search and destroy or fetch or whatever).

As a product test for future DAI excels as a product release well lets just say maybe the anticipated/actual sales will state the truth. (im being politely sarcastic here at the end of the sentence.)

There were a few days after launch when Bioware was trying to show their proactive side after "some" of us made such damningly accurate posts.  I don't think Bioware expected programmers, modders, technicians and writers among others to be so critical or constructive.

I read over the Top Dog's comments to folks and had to bite my tongue then drop my jaw at the blatant honesty in some of it. :o  So much missing material and simple surface bugs are simply unacceptable for a retail product, especially one touting GOTY!

Fraud came immediately to mind, so I doubt the lawyers let that stay up.  If any of you just think DA3 is simply weak -think again -it was way behind schedule (several months at least) and many of the bugs were well known -frankly it shouldn't work at all, thankfully frostbite is stable.  This is the reason behind the RPG game mechanics issues that cause so many errors.  Every module w/in the RPG system has its own peculiarities and this is why errors vary in outcomes.  New material is one thing, but the big question for future DLC is should we pay to have it finished?

Instabilities cover a lot of territory, but I will grant some slack - many of these are a tough nuts to crack!  Most are not easily repeatable and this makes them hard to understand let alone fix.

They can focus on the most widespread and repeatable ones, add some of the things players have commented that should already be in the game, and make it free for the sake of sheer decency. I'm not holding my breath over here. Mark Darrah's tweet today was borderline condescending, and overly cryptic, Pythia style.

Well, Octarin most of the other bugs should have been caught in the BETA - but I don't want to start a rant -The Beta was simply implemented poorly and not a people problem.

There is a long list of errors with an effort to consolidate -jeffzero reads many of them -some indicate fixed or some other status in the comments -its in the technical area last I looked.  I have some of them if you can't find it

What bug is keeping you from continuing the game? I just read the wiki about some of them. . :(

First it was one where conversations stopped progressing. I was told to wait and it would solve itself. 45 minutes later it had not solved itself. Had to restart the whole game. 25 hours down the drain. Now I am 50 hours into the game and I am stuck in Orlais. During that quest at the ball, where you chase assassins. I head up to the balcony and some cutscene is supposed to happen. Nothing. That bit also sendt by Support rating down to almost zero, because it drops when time passes. Pretty sure that savegame is ruined too now.

my worst bug I've found is my game froze on a loading screen. I do play the xb1 version by the way so it prolly isn't as bad as the pc version if what I hear is correct. but anyways I had to delete the game and install it all over again cause resetting the console just put me right back at the fricken loading screen! A thing to note for the PC users is BioWare supports the consoles a little more than PC. yea it'd be nice if they kind of spread the work on developing the game equally on all game systems (it doesn't help they worked the game for old gen as well which spreads them a little thin. (not being mean but imo they should've focused on next gen stuff and the PC) I doubt the next game will support last gen which may make the PC users a little more happy.

@OP

If you'd said this 2 months ago I would have gotten mad.

But 250 hours in-game and I agree with basically everything. It's really sad, and I'm ashamed to admit this--but I had more replay drive for DA: 2.

:(

My biggest issue is that the story and open world are not balanced properly.

I enjoyed the story of DA:I, but it's biggest weakness was the open world. The writers tried to build tension, but because it's possible to explore of hours on end between story missions, that tension was lost.

During my second playthrough, I'm balancing the story and exploration myself and I'm having a lot of fun.

Perhaps gamers have become too used to being lead around or being able to complete everything in one playthrough for a game where you need do this balancing yourself or perhaps BioWare's way of telling a story doesn't suit an open world as much as they'd hoped.

Litlte bit of A and B and some unmentioned C's and D's.  Skyrim alone sold just as much or more than all of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age games combined(20+ million Skyrim units sold compared to several million each from ME1-3 and DA1-3).  Would have been a fair assessment from the developers that open world exploration and interaction is what people want.

As much as I looked forward to the open world exploration, it didn't appeal to me as much as I thought it would when I sat down to play.  Was considering putting aside my OCD to collect and accomplish everything and focus more on the main story, though i've lost too much interest to start up a second playthrough.

is exactly right.. Much of the play, is just waling, picking herbs, and very boring time waisted in between the missions the 'feel' good.. Its been said many times, that a good 3/4 of the missions (im being modest) is just empty, flat, filler! Anmd its true.. Over a dozen plays of Origins, and im struggling to finish one of Inquisition.. Even when i try to focus on themain missions, i get side tracked by emptying inventory, or rafting... Filler.. Instead of it complimenting the game, it ends up being the game!

Don't call multiplayer pure garbage. It's actually the best performed part of the game.

Lol... And yet 3/4 matches are bugged, player frozen, closed game entirely, keys not dropping, maps and enemies going invisible, character walking as if he is on a merry go round...

Though, i guess i would agree with you.. Running much better than Campaign...
