It all comes down to your build. If you are built for rocking criticals, your TC will do a lot more damage.. if you are speced for Auto attacking.. not so much.

The health bar seems to be slow and a bit buggy sometimes, so it's possible that it's close to death when 1k Cuts ends, but the health bar still shows it as around 50%.  (Dragons typically have 150,000+ health, so you shouldn't be able to bring it from 50% to dead with just 1-2 Deathblows.)

Also, my daggers are the master work dual blade daggers from the hissing wastes. But in this save, they aren't dragon bone yet. I'm just using tier 3 metals. Also, I only have the tier 2 hidden blades master work. But that shouldn't matter.

This makes a lot of sense. In my test, I tried with and without pitch grenade and saw the health bar drop to 50% and called it quits. But if there's some UI lag in the health bars, then the pitch grenade test might have done more damage and I would have reached the wrong conclusions.

It's also possible that dragons are immune to the vulnerability effect from pitch grenade.

1st advice:  wait a little more ;)  I did it when I was level 15-16, it was tough, but I didn't know all the I knew now :)

2nd advice: make sure you have chosen to upgrade your number of potions so you have 12, not 8. (it's in the war room, when you get enough points to choose new perks)

3rd advice: Bring Iron Bull as a reaver. The dialogue is awesome, but he also has some cool abilities.

4th advice: Bring Vivienne she is a knight enchanter and they have some really cool spells to use against dragons, just search the forum for a proper build (I spec'ed her correctly, but I haven't played in a month, so I don't remember, sorry :( )  You get close to the dragon and use her abilities, she does massive damage and the fight is over in a few minutes.  Cold spells will help too, but nearly as efficient.

5th advice: Use the potions the reduces fire damage.  Make sure you upgraded them too before going against this dragon.

6th adive: When the dragon flaps his wings, you got to move closer to the dragon, not away, to avoid damage.  As soon as he stops, move away a little bit as he tends to use some aoe abilities to damage all your party.

7th advice: Attack from multiple fronts.  Try to stay on the side of the dragon, one warrior to each side.

8th advice: since you play an archer, I'd bring 2 warriors to the party and Vivienne.  That means, Iron Bull, Blackwall, Vivienne and you.  Use Blackwall's abilities to reduce damage, don't care about doing damage, just make him the focus of the dragon attacks and have the other party members damage the beast.  I hate archers in DA:I because they always go way to close to the ennemy and they are difficult to position correctly, unlike DA:O and DA2.

Hope that helps.

Well, I managed to beat the dragon following your advice. Thanks for that! Specced Vivienne as a Knight Enchanter with Spirit support and she basically solo-ed the dragon, spamming Spirit Blade. That didn't feel very fun, honestly. I'd hoped to be a bit more tactical, using Blackwall to draw aggro and Iron Bull and Vivienne as damage dealers. Blackwall did his job, but Iron Bull died way too quickly, and used up all my healing potions in the meantime.

So I've found a way to beat dragons, but I need to do a better job so it's not just Vivienne wailing on them with Spirit Blade. It would help if tactical mode was more user-friendly. The camera sucks and I really don't like it doesn't center on the chosen character. Hopefully I'll get used to these limitations.

For what it's worth, I learned that using the health bar can be unreliable when estimating damage. Last night, I killed the fire dragon in Emprise du Lion. The final skill I used was Thousand Cuts. At the end of the animation, the Dragon's health bar read 25% even though the Dragon was clearly in its death throes animation (i.e. dead). So i was clearly wrong. There's is nothing in the game engine preventing an ability from doing more than 50% of a Dragon's health. Still not sure if Dragons are immune to Pitch Grenades however.

In my experience, the thing that kills party members in dragon fights are Wing Buffet and Dragon's breath.

Some tips, keep all characters within the wingspan of the dragon. Just have ranged stand to the side of it (not behind because of tail swipe). The Dragon doesn't move when it does its wing buffet so use that time to pop all your most powerful abilities. When the Dragon flies in the air, keep moving in wide circles and have your party members follow you. That will help dodge breath attacks.

Against fire dragons, have party members drink regen potions as soon as the start taking ticks of the fire damage. That will slow down the rate at which they pop healing potions.

Finally, use raist tonics and dispel hatful effects. Especially on fire and lightening dragons, dispel can save your party from a lot of damage.

I take Blackwell on front right leg.
Cassandra on front leftt leg
Dorian back right leg
My reaver on back left leg.

Hit until leg is bleeding then help the other members with their leg... When all legs are bleeding hit from the front and enjoy the death of another dragon.
