Only noobs and scrubs use immolate when there's so many better skills out there.
The pro has spoken people!!! Don't use Immolate. EVER!!!!

Buddhist Monks are gonna self-immolate in protest over being told not to use Immolate!
This. It's a really good ability but it's very situational. In my experience the slow casting time means that this is pretty much unusable in decent groups. The enemies will be downed before you arm the mine and it will be useless, the only time that you have a chance of really using this is at the door on zone 5 and there's much more useful skills to take instead
Having played around with the power a bit more I can safely say its not practical in a remotely competent team simply because most enemies will be dead before mine activates. I had hoped to use the mines at the start of a battle by approaching a spawn and putting the fire mine down, once it had activated I would attack the enemies with my other abilities. However the minute you put the mine down (even if your not that close to a spawn) the enemies will aggro and come charging meaning the mine is rendered useless. Its simply too situational to use a lot of the time.
However in saying that, Fire mine is an excellent ability for solo's - played around on Threatening and Perilous where I would put the mines in key choke-points rather than in an enemy spawn, aggro'd the enemies. In most cases the explosions would kill enemies outright but with more tankier enemies like brutes etc the dot would damage would eventually finish them off. I really did like the synergy between Fire mine, immolate and Barrier, often I could hit Fire Mine followed by immolate in quick succession. The key thing is strategically luring enemies into place, kiting the enemies so they are fairly close together so that they are all hit by the explosion.
...
So whats your fourth skill? I just find it quite safer to solo with firewall due to the fear and chokepoint advantage, and I have to bring firestorm... right?

Fourth skill was frost step, I wanted to keep the mana consumption down and I like the utility of moving in and out of range quickly when required.
Actually on a team that communicates and plans out each encounter, fire mine could be utterly devastating. Tank sits at a chokepoint with their finger on the taunt, you put down a firemine just in front of them as barrier is cast and other traps are laid, the enemies charge in tank taunts, they go to him and all hell breaks loose for them as they trigger the traps just before they get to the tank.
I use fire mine all the time in pug matches, yes, I miss more often then I'd like to, but you also have to pick your targets, if there's a lot of melee types, set it right by you, if there's a lot of archers, well just pick one, and set it under him, you can create major havoc by hitting off mine, then doing imolate, they littler explode twice, one right after the other.
If you have enhanced ring of firewall and fire mine it makes it almost op
I started a new build last night that utilizes fire mine. Perilous oriented. Thinking of posting a video. Had no idea how hard elementalists could hit. My top immo last night was 3200 crit. Top fire mine was 6500 non crit
Try this combo: run into enemies (or wait for them), barrier --> firemine underneath feet --> barrier, with the static charge passive. Enemies get paralyzed as you cast, and blow up as you finish.
It is stupid fun.
I often solo mob groups on Barrier / FW/ FM / Staffing alone. Anything that gets past FW gets blown up by FM. Usually FStorm is added to the mix, but anything is good really. Tempted to add Fade Cloak for even more burst damage.

As many others in here, I have started to use fire mine and I quite like it. For those of you saying you place it under enemies, then they agro and run towards you...... set the mine where they will be running, not where they stand.
I think I crit some arcane horror for just under 8k the other day with it.
It also works great if your the last man standing Kiting the enemies around corners. This is my first run through with the elementalist and I personally love it, Coming from using an Arcane until most challenges were completed. The powers the elementalist possesses as far as healing when enemies die and barrier make this character very fun to use.
