How to keep ranged at range?

For example Sera.

Disabled any abilities requiring melee range. Set Long Shot preferred. Tried defend herself, follow herself and pretty much all permutations of behaviour options.

Silly ****** still runs in and shoots point blank.

Only option is put her on hold at range. That soon gets old on every single fight.

Suggestions?

set ai to defend tank and disable sleep powder. That worked 90% of the time for me. Also, set jumping shot to preferred.

First I've seen of this.  I gotta try it.  I tried all other suggestions, none of which have worked.  Hope this does.

The ai is stupid, no matter what you do they will run in and try to tank the dragons, why they removed the tactics from previous beggers belief..

Setting tank to defend self and ranged to follow self, works in a fashion but its no way near as intuitive as DAO tactics was.

disable all traps.

set nothing to preferred

only use long shot and explosive shot (not recommending full draw and never ever leaping shot)

if you are archer/mage, set tactics as default, no need to change anything

if you are tank/melee, set tactics to follow any range members such as solas or Vivienne, etc and not controlled character.

And, set the ones you want to stay at range to DEFEND the one they follow. They will only attack what attacks the one they follow and, will stay close to that one but, it keeps them at range most of the time and, makes for a gang up of ranged on whatever might rush into them.

Alternately, respec Sera as a Dual wield and let her rush in as she is wont to do anyway.

Thanks for your suggestions folks, I'll try your recommendations, however I won't be letting AI control DW any time soon!

Lord I miss DA:O & even DA:2 tactics.

Anything to make simpler (read 'cheaper') programming I suppose!

I tried, playing as a mage, Defend > Me figuring I am smart enough to not run into a fight so that means my defender should follow suite. That didn't work because the ranged types, in particular, could defend me from a long ways away and so they'd not move even if I did (you really have to go a long way) OR if I wasn't being attacked they'd do nothing. Follow  > Me command was bad because, especially as a mage, my opening stanza in those fights was Barrier>Cage>Mine none of which counted as an attack so my follower did nada and then you still had the "won't move away from danger" problem.

Well, they were doing as they were told. I run a mage and, I open with Barrier then basic just to get my follows fighting, then add the rest. My defender doesn't need to attack unless I am being attacked.. I can keep barrier rolling on my melee team and, toss a bit of damage in there between barrier casts. They will be fine, it's when I go down that we'd have a problem so, that's when someone needs to be handy to make sure that never happens.

I also put my Quizzy mage in heavy armor as soon as I can convince Cullen to bring me some silverite - he can get it before I'm leveled up enough to get it myself and, I am KE so, if either ranged or melee goes down, I can either revive them from afar or, do their job to finish the fight, depending on the situation, enemy resists and such.

I just have them follow themselves. I disable all trap skills, and I put Evade / Stealth on prefer. Those changes helped me lots.

Make them follow themselves, seems to fix majority of the problems for me anyhow. Also use of the tactical camera, if you character requires close up moves then make sure if they do use them to move them back.

For Sera or a Rogue archer I also set the 'leaping shot'? I believe to preferred to help with spacing.

Possible fix might be setting the specific Archer or Mage to Hold Position while in Tac-Cam; seems to work fairly well as long as there is a line of sight to a target.

Why does putting her on hold get old? It's one command that's done relatively quickly and is a solution to the problem.

Also, LOS doesn't break hold.

Varric has always loved cqc. I remember he would spend ages trying to dry hump the ancient rock wraith's legs. I'm pretty sure he was trolling me, since the only time he'd disengage from mêlée range was if he could get a better angle for more friendly fire with archer's lance. I still can't not have him in my party though!

Set them to follow themselves and leaping shot as favorite. Works for me every time.

I have had better luck with the second one, and set Defensive abilities to Preferred (eg; Stealth, Evade, etc.). The problem with leaping Shot for me is that this will often take the Rogue out of Barrier support range, but it still is an option.

This works.  It doesn't even matter who they follow honestly though as long as it's not a melee fighter.  I set them to follow my inquisitor who is ranged and put on Evade and Stealth as preferred.  Everything else is off.
