Would love to be able to effectively start the game at Skyhold with a clone of my character before taking a specialization.

This would allow me to try out all the specs without the grind of the first Act.

All you can do is just make a save before selecting specialization, and use Save instead of auto-saves or quicksaves, while keeping track of which Save is for which specialization.  I simultaneously leveled a reaver and templar for a few levels of the same character for a while to get the feel for which I liked, but due to not being able to name saves you have to keep a record of what save number is what.

I mean, you can use quicksaves during individual playthroughs, but don't rely on them for character save states, and don't overwrite your Prime Save right before character specialization.  Track save numbers to specializations to avoid overwriting one specialization with another.

This is what I do, before settling on a spec I just save the game and note the exact date and time so I know which one it is later.

Not that I know of. You can make a save and note the time or do what I did which was to hold off on picking a specialization for my character for a bit and control the party members who has the specializations I want as I would the main until I decided on one. There is a companion for each one and you can respec them to match your style of build.
