I think the game works pretty well till Skyhold. But after reaching it, once all areas are accessible, the game's biggest problems begin. The complete detachment of the main story and villain from the world. There is no pressure on you, no sign of threat. And it's not only the main story. Josephine being the target of assassins? Better start spending weeks wandering through the various worlds. The modular semi-open world approach just doesn't fit well  with the story pacing.

And alas, this is where we simply needed a more substantial and lengthier mainquest or preferably some more main-story central plots to the exploration areas. Aside from the character recruitments and some of the personal sidequests there are more than half of the exploration areas that are not used for any main story content at all, and to me that's a pretty big problem. Sure they all have some notes lying around about Coryphenus and the effects of Red Lyrium or Red Templars or Venatori. That doesn't really add a whole lot to the overarching plot to be honest.

The spine of inquisition's story needed to run across all exploration areas in its major beats to some extent at least.

I also think consensus tells Bioware that their next objective is to create a game that balances exploration and nonlinear progression better with story-driven and cinematic content. That's kind of my takeaway with this game. ME2 was near-perfect in my opinion. It had a straightforward plot which was not good, but everything else, the player agency, the pacing, the sound design and mission length and world building -- all that ****, it was GOOD. They should use that as a template.

@Linkenski:

The main difference is that ME2 had no exploration element at all, so I really wouldn't use that as an example for how future DA games should work. Also, I do not agree that things "break down" at Skyhold. I found the earlier areas quite a bit more tedious the second and third time around, and there's so much happening at Skyhold that it balances the open-world maps out.

On the other hand, I think that all in all, one more main plot mission and two less open-world maps (assuming that balances out resource-wise) would've been a better balance.

I don't really mind the side missions. They give me somewhere to walk to and trigger banter. Although the shards are somewhat annoying. I just collect one to unlock the Oasis, and ignore the rest. When I do my "perfect" canon run I'll probably do everything. The thing that bugs me the most is how much area we travel. I'm going to start doing the Hissing Wastes after the Western Approach and then do Here Lies The Abyss after those two. While clumping Exalted Plains / Emerald Graves / Emprise Du Lion all together before the ball. Rather than bouncing around so much.

And I'll try and limit my returning to Skyhold while i'm way out west.

I still can't believe that people actually do all these side-quests or "fetch quests" as you call them.
If I want "power points" I just go closing rifts and establishing camps and voila no need for any "fetch quest" to be done.

That's...exactly the same thing to me. Go here and kill 3 bears for their claws is the same as go here and kill demons to close the rift or go here and light a fire to start a camp, etc...There's no appeal for me to wander around a big empty world just looking at things. If I want something like that I'll watch the national geographic channel and actually learn something interesting. I miss the kind of side quests that were part of every BioWare game I had played before this (barring ME3 perhaps). Quests with NPCs I could have conversations with, choose my responses based on my personality, end it different ways depending on my choice, etc...

One full playthrough, a half-play through, and a third that is barely started. I've uninstalled the game as its a chore to play for me. Discussions about the game and characters are still interesting to me (similar to how I enjoy discussing a TV show, book, or movie without the need to constantly rewatch or re-read).

The game does decline in excitement plot-wise after skyhold and after doing the fetch-quests once they aren't interestin g enough to want to do again since I already know the tidbits of lore associates with them. Unfortunately it's these that comprise the majority of the game.

I prefer Mass Effect 2/3 s format of primarily story and meaningful side quest missions with fetch quests only taking up an hour or two of gameplay out of 40 to 50. Much better than 85% of a 100 hour play through. That just feels like a waste of time.

I'm just going to say I disagree with the basic premise.  I don't think DA:I works in any capacity.  I see lots of potential, but each of the parts are so incomplete that it is impossible for any of them to come together to make a product that would make me want to suffer through it again.

The story is half-assed, exploration is half-assed, the side quests are half-assed, the differentiation between PC races is even less than half-assed, and so on.  The entire game feels like they started work on a bunch of really cool things and ran out of time/ideas on all of them.

Again have to agree with this.

My second playthrough is feeling a lot more different to my first one now that I am roleplaying a female human warrior. I fashioned her after Cassandra's personality of having a tough exterior in being a leader. And I plan romancing the Iron Bull that will make the game more different. I look forward to this

Society has changed compared to 40 years ago.   Criticism is fine but today solely negatively invested and construed as socially positive participation.

I don't expect a ferfect game, whatever that is supposed to be.  A game I can pour countless hours in is a good game in my book.  Escapism is what I seek and Bioware delivers that in spades.  I like many others have bits and pieces we would ef liked differently.

By the way Ieldra thank you for "Cheat Engine Lua Scripting", didn't even know something like that existed.

One more observation:

I'm coming from a short session exploring the Hinterlands. I'm not sure why, but the prospect of entering that world again when I started made me smile, and I'm coming out of it in a pleasant mode. It has been that way since my first playthrough, except for those story missions with evoked different emotions. I like to be there, do a few small things, follow the story a bit, talk with characters.

Whatever that magic is, it just works. It's like a favorite book. I've written a list of where to find 506 of 510 Codex entries so assume I really have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game world. It doesn't matter that I already know where most things are (some I have forgotten) except for some variations in conversations I haven't tried. It just works.

I do wish Bioware to some more content to some maps. I wish for a few other things. But the bottom line is that I like to play this game.

@Bizantura:

I'm not sure I posted it already, but here's the link for the CheatEngine script collection for DAI.

One weird bug that is annoying is the one where a companion might engage in banter that is meant for a specific companion, but that companion was swapped out with the horn at the camp. This happened with Cassandra for me once, with her saying things that were meant for Sera, after Sera was traded out.

Thank you, I thought I was going crazy. I was fighting a couple of bad guys, when I suddenly heard Sera's fighting banter. But she wasn't in my party at the time. I thought I had misheard it, but it happend again and again. I swapped her at the camp with Cassandra before that, so this might be the cause.
