I don't know where to go in the Hinterlands.

Hello all.  I'm new to the world of RPGs and the Dragon Age series.  This is my first play in the genre so I feel like I'm struggling to catch on to how this game works.

I've been spending many hours in the Hinterlands, and I think I've completed all the quests that I can.  There are a few Rifts left, but they're guarded by Demons that are higher level than me, and I can't kill them.  I'm level 8.

I'm wondering if some one could give me some specific advice on what to do.   I can post images of anything requested or answer any questions about my character or clan, but I don't know what to share right now.   Here's the map as I have it now.  The red circles are the Rifts I can't beat.  The blue circle... well I just can't even find that one.   Some one suggested I go to Haven so that I can move on with the story, but I have no idea where that is.  When I select anything in the Journal and it has the eye icon next to it, I don't see the eye icon any where on the map.  I'm completely out of ideas and I would appreciate some help.

Thanks fellas.  I hope I got this in the right forum.   I'm sure there are some moderators that will move it if not.

If you only have rift quests left then head to camp. There will be a pedestal thing that will take you to the map and you can go to Haven. It's been a while since I've played DA:I (cuz im currently restarting the ME trilogy atm) but if I remember right any camp should have a map pedestal. if not then find the main camp, the one where you first start at in ach area. Good luck and ask if you need anything! DA:I is a wonderful game so cheers!

I would recommend checking out the following article:

First time I played this I did exactly what you're doing, trying to complete everything on my 1st playthrough.  Later I learned to just get the necessary 4 Power to unlock Val Royeaux and then move on.

The Crossroads seems to be the main camp in the Hinterlands.  I don't know what the map pedestal looks like.  There's a Quick Travel pyramid shaped statue, but I don't see it giving me any access to another area.

Haha Good Article.  Point taken.  I didn't really do it on purpose, I think I just got caught up in trying to find the right way to go.   I see what you're talking about with the 4 Powers; it's under Inquisitor's Path / The Threat Remains.   Why does it say I have 4/4 but with the diamond to the left of it empty as if I don't have all 4?

The red circle rifts tend to need around ~level 11 to be doable, unless you've loaded up on crazy crafted hardware. I personally did them as a test run for my specialisation just after I'd gotten it.

The blue circle rift is in a cave along the cliff wall, it's accessible only from one direction.

To access a new location, you need to bring up the map, click the 'world map' button in the top left, and it'll show you a country map with unlocked locations. Just click on one of them and it should give you a local view, including fast travel markers you can select and travel to.

Go to map- back out of local map to world map- Haven is on the Fereldan side between Orlais and Fereldan. Fast travel to Haven. Advance main quests from the war table. Thank the maker you're out of the hinterlands!

Because those top 3 requirements will be fulfilled at once.

You will:
Go to the War Room.

Choose to go to Val Royeaux.

And spend the 4 power you've gathered to be able to go there. The bar is full because you have the 4 power that's required, you just haven't done what's required with that power yet.

As far as The Hinterlands.. yes, as others have said, the zone isn't made to do in one sitting. Most of the zones in the game are the same. You're seldom intended to 'complete' a zone before moving on. Maybe a quest further down the chain will bring you back at the appropriate level, or you'll decide that 'now I'm high enough to handle those rifts' (or 'that dragon'), or a specialization quest/companion quest will send you back. Some zones have gaps of just a level or two, some have larger gaps than that. Hinterlands is just the most noticeable one.

Also, don't be afraid to progress the story. Trying to get TOO much done before you choose to progress with the main story might mean that the story quest you start is set for someone several levels lower than you are.

Your goal on the Hinterlands is to get enough power that the Val Royeaux clerics agree to talk to you. In game terms that's 4 power.

The idea is that the areas have a ton of stuff and you decide what to do and what not to. Think about what your characters would do, you give them reasons. I think this helps you develop an attachment to your characters and increases replayability as well.

Ah hah.   It's like it was hidden in plain sight.  I didn't look at the world map.  I knew it would be something seemingly obvious, or at least easy for some one better seasoned with this type of game. :)

This game is really adept at making me feel inept. haha.  Historically, I've played first and third person shooters and other kinds of action games.  The last games I beat recently are Max Payne 3 and The Last of Us.    I suppose it's the non-linear qualities of Dragon Age that leave me room to get out of whack -- not having a clear, obvious path to follow.  BUT, that's partially why I got this game... to try something new and spend lots of time playing it.  I took me 18 hours to get out of the Hinterlands.  ha!

The scale and scope of Inquisition can be overwhelming sometimes, especially now that I've found a new area.  Phew.  I guess just one step at a time huh.

This would be a fair point if you were given decent info over what quests to do. I never knew whether I was letting myself in for some daft fetch quest or something like valannamar ( or whatever it's called)

I actually appreciate the Devs for granting the Player the choice on how they wished to precede. No need to hold me by the hand; simply grant me several options on how I wish to further the storyline.

Indeed, but either you're given the info to decide which quests to do, or the quest system has to assume you'll do the majority of them. It can't have it both ways.

I remained in the Hinterlands until it became problematic to progress further. Then I hit Orlais and the Storm Coast until I could return. Nothing else was required.
