To upload your Mass effect 1 save game files, use the game luancher before heading into the game, There is a configure option button, Click this.
After you have the configure panel open, on the left options buttons go to "save games" button.
Press copy Mass effect 1 Save games.

This works for steam and retail copies
My Documents ---> Bioware ---> Mass effect ----> Save.
click save folder and your done

Extended guide if your still lost.

You are given a Browser folder, from here navigate to
My documents expand this folder, Find bioware expand again and just double click on the save folder.
There is no indication that anything has happened but save the settings as you exit.
Start up the game and your imports are there.
