I haven't seen any posts that express this, but I do think that it is a compelling feature of fictional characters for a lot of people, especially women. I think it's one reason why so many female players in particular were drawn to Anders and Fenris. These men are damaged, and so too is Cullen. He has been mentally, emotionally, and physically scarred by the events of the past 10 years. Now, that's not to say that his issues form the basis of the romance (as with Fenris), they do not, but it IS a component.

If that is something you find compelling, I'd say give Cullen a try.

As the person playing the game (not as the PC, because at first, she doesn't realize how damaged Cullen is/was), his past adds a lot to the current story, for me. So yes, that's part of the appeal, that he has changed and we (the player) know that he has changed, is trying to change even more.

I don't remember any other extra flirts or dialog with Cullen as a warrior in Haven. I know there is an extra flirt for mage inquisitors after you get Vivienne and if you ally with the mages there is some mage specific dialog with him asking if he has a problem with her now, but nothing else comes to mind other than if you side with the Templars he's very sympathetic to a non mage inquisitors in regards to envy. Mages don't get any special dialog there. Probably because they are used to having demons mess with their minds.

I enjoyed Cullen romance the most of all of the ones I've played. If you play a mage (and side with the mages) it give nice conflict to the romance that I think would have otherwise been a little two sweet. Plus mages get a ton of extra dialog. From Cullen and the Inquisitors.

I really love it, just the good quantity of everything. Sweet, sometime a bit sad, but it's his unwavering loyalty & strength who won my Lavellan's heart. Best character development in the whole series IMO.

And about lacking content (party banter?), I don't feel any lacking content actually. He got War Table Banter (ok, less funny most times but more than often it's hilarious). And Cullen get lots of cutscenes.

I still suggest you to play mages & side with mages to get the best romance line in game if you want to get the best lines.

There's truth in what nightscrawl said, his dark past add a certain depth to his story. But here's the man who tries his best to atone. In 256 shades of black and white, he changed from more white area to very dark area than slowly back to white once again. That's character development.

I haven't played the whole romance yet. I have three main quests remaining but so far the romance has been sweet. Inquisitor and Cullen are both awkward when they try to approach each others. They are so cute. I haven't seen drama in the romance but that is a nice change because there has been a lot of drama and tragedy in romances which I have liked. Alistair, Thane..

I choose a human mage to romance Cullen because I like that he is a former templar and my PC is a mage. There are couple of occasions where you can choose mage specific conversation options but the main reason why I chose mage was that it gives the whole romance a different feeling. Well at least to me. I would have chosen an elf to romance him but my female elves are going to romance Solas. Maybe I didn't get the feeling that Cullen was so damaged because I had romanced Solas and Fenris before and I think they were more damaged.

Speaking for myself, I was never drawn to Anders and Fenris, I avoided romancing them from my very first pt in DA2, because it was so obvious that they were the "damaged man" ™,  "the damaged man" is something that I do not find appealing on its own, especially since, as you say, the said damage often forms the basis of the romance in these situations and often is the center of it.  DA is full of such men.

One of the things I like about the way Cullen's romance is written is that the issue is there and it always will be there, but it's not the center of his character, it's a part among many other parts and it is as much important to the story as it is to the romance aspect.  Another thing that I find very appealing in the way his character is written is the fact that he tries to have a moderate outlook on things, because he has gone already through  the extremes and has seen where it can lead. In other words, while he is not a perfect person, he is a matured person. A person who despite his nature to be passionate and impulsive tries to be levelheaded and accepting, that's a character growth I have not seen in any other character in DA prior DAI, perhaps it's because he had the time to take this journey, but on the other hand there were many other ways to write him post DA2, I'm glad they chose this way.  It's refreshing.

His romance is very sweet and cute. Unlike the other male romances, Cullen doesn't have trouble committing to you and doesn't leave you at the end of the game. Save for the part about the lyrium addiction, it's very fairytale-like.

His romance also has just as much content as any other romance, despite being an advisor, so don't listen to anyone saying otherwise. If anything, he has more content than the other male romance options, as he has a lot of standalone romance scene (as opposed to a romance scene being tacked onto a normal conversation).

I'm just starting it and I already like it. Although I don't know if kissing Solas in the fade ruined it. I hope not. Talking to him in the courtyard at Skyhold had me in total   mode. I think I might have to skip Solas and stick to Cullen for this playthrough. lol!

With all the romances I went through - which are far from all - Solas seems to be the most passionate kisser.

Cullen is different, but... well... worth it. Also made me scream 'kill the messenger!' (which I wanted to yell for years ;))

Cullen is your stable, healthy relationship. Honestly, something I feel more people should strive for in real life.

But since this is a game, and not real life, I can see why some people find it too perfect (Disney). Still, the romances that I personally enjoy the most are the ones that are the most dissimilar to Edward Cullen as possible, and strangely that is Cullen.

If you want your character to discover the pits of despair face first, then go for Blackwall. I'm not a fan of secrecy and constant self-loathing in romances though. It gets tedious. Still, I am trying to create a female dwarf for Blackwall because I want the RP experience.

Or create a character that is diametrically opposed to the romance option. I made an atheist, disciplined, practical Spock-like qunari female, and she had to break it off with Sera after the Arbor Wilds quest. She was sad, but that's what she had to do.

Bittersweet. Really, had me gasping and gushing "awww" so many times. And plus that look he gives her when walking away after kissing her (kissing scene on battlements) DAAYYUUUMM

I never did as many kissing scenes as I did with Cullen. Just because of that look ;)

IMO*** the cullen romance is the best one for DAI...but who knows whats to come with the DLC's then maybe I could appreciate Solas' more.

*Unpopular opinion* I found it kind of boring and hard to connect with. Romanced him with a female elf mage and, while it was pleasant enough, and stable, and there were some individual scenes that were cute or compelling or romantic, the overall progression left me cold. It felt... normative, like he's the kind of guy all women are supposed to find attractive. I kept waiting for more of his character to get revealed, and then finally realized that this was all there was. No hidden depths, no secrets. What you see is what you get. I can see how this would be appealing to some people, so if you're looking for a kind of default, trope-y romance (and I don't mean that as a bad thing - it's iconic for a reason after all), go for Cullen. If that's not what you want, choose a different LI.

Damn, I can't find the source anymore, but some Bioware writer (even Patrick Weekes, I suppose... but really don't know) said, they'd make it up to the player if they had or hadn't. So... just because I didn't see it, doesn't mean it didn't happen :-p

Didn't see 'it' with Cullen either. Could be, my rogue kicked him from the table, ran away and came back the next morning to stalk a man, who likes to sleep naked ;)

Best. Romance. Ever. Loved the scene when Quizzy return from the final battle - so beautifully appropriate and normal!

Sweet, simple, fairly healthily uncomplicated. Not a good romance for people who like drama.

A bit of advice - never have a relationship with an Apostate... doesn't seem to end well. :P

Please. When you Romance cullen, he adores the **** out of you and the ending ...oh man...sorry but even if I didn't see them banging ..you got more than 3 cutscenes ..which is what resumes the solas' experience .. but like I said..maybe more is to come and that would explain the limited Romance with him.

Okay, so what I really meant is:

If I want my Inquisitor to bang anybody, it happened in my own little Dragon Age World. Even Lace Harding.

Besides, when it comes to Solas, I've got a backdoor. When a DLC or the next DA tells me that nothing happened, then Solas seduced her in the Fade and made her forget. Case closed ;)

I know...no DRAMA ..that was more than welcome.. knowing Bioware and their love of breaking our hearts ( ME3 anyone ) I was expecting Cullen to die and breaking my Inquisitor's heart..or maybe I'd die .. or maybe he ran off  .. but then It was like " welcome home sweetheart, relieved you survived, lets go practice making babies" ... ;)
