For the sake of maintaining the overdramatic essence intended, we shall pretend that these do not exist...
I'm kind of trying to forget that Ultima's 8 and 9 do actually exist...
No worries there, my friends are LARPers. Lightning bolt!

Elder Scrolls? A crpg?
I had to take time away from crafting my iron daggers to post that...hope you´re happy...
Yes it is. It actually lets you roleplay, make moral choices, and create your very own character.

You mean those two games EA dished out after they forced a take over of Origin Systems? They are doing the same thing to DA now. More action, less rpg.
The original CRPGs never had herb gathering or crafting. They also didn't have action mechanics. I might try an experiment with the next game I GM. I'll ask my players to fetch 10 herbs and build something. Should be funny as most of them are powergamers and have rarely invested a single point in survival or craft (anything). I may also "modernise" the game by throwing dice at them to simulate hits by monsters.
Please upload the video. ![]()

Yep. The moving platform 'puzzles' in U8 said it all.
Crying shame how that series ended up.
I still think U7:TBG is one of the true classic masterpieces. So far ahead of its time. Night/day cycles, changing weather, NPC schedules, populated towns/villages. I could go on, I won't, but I could.
If ever a game deserved the enhanced edition treatment for modern systems, it's that.

Ultima 5 got remade using the dungeon siege engine. Came out a few years ago. Stunning game.

You have a whole ecosystem of kickstarter + unity engine and you are wondering if a single rpg that doesn't conform to this genre might destroy everything as a whole? There is room for everything. I played divinity and this and enjoyed them both
Actually Ultima 6 got remade using the same engine too. Also very very great.

I might have to check it out some time. I did play the original U5 & U6 that came in the the U1-6 collectors box.
Considering the devs didn't have gigabytes of disk space to work with and had to be conscious of how many disks the game shipped on, they did well to produce the type of in depth games they did.

...and shadowrun, wastelands...the market is actually a lot better than it was 10 years ago...but again, you are ruining the overdramatic essence of doom at the hands of electronic arts that is being pursued here...

shadowrun is so good! This year has actually been good for crpgs. Oh wait I should let them continue with their impending doom. I am kind of messing up the thread.
Carry on gentlemen!
it's how this world works.
we had Hitman, where you have to plan your strategy, learn exits, kill your target and only your target , then we got another part when you could march in with ak47 and be as successful by executing every single NPC on the map, not only your target.
we had opportunistic Thief where enemy patrol paths seemed to be randomly generated, your footsteps could alert enemies if you weren't careful. and then the last part came out - batman protagonist who tries to save the city, a "game" with absolutely no gameplay
we had cRPGs in which you didn't have to fight to progress the story, you could roll a low int thug and the game allowed you to RP such char simply by limiting dialogue options to unintelligible grunts. and now we have open worlds with MMO content and shitty gameplay, with pro-social content
we need to adapt or grow up

I think a lot of us are holding hope for PoE.
I'll give Divinity another run when they release the final patch for it. Not quite sure when that's expected to happen.
Will have to continue my Shadowrun play throughs as well.
It's just the end of BW making cRPGs. But BW has been moving from it for a long time. There are still a lot of publishers doing it. This year we got Divinity:OS and Shadowrun: Dragonfall (which are both better games than DA:I imo) and I'm sure some others I didn't play. None of BW's latest creations were true to cRPG roots. DA:O seemed like a step back to the roots but they continued to evolve it in the opposite direction.
What I'm dissatisfied with now is the weird marriage of aRPG and cRPG mechanics that we got in DA:I. It's never gonna be good if you try to please everyone. Just make if a full action rpg where you can actually roll, jump, block etc without using clunky abilities and be done with it. Atm it's like the worst of both worlds.
If your still looking for proper crpgs in Bioware then stop, they made it evidently clear that its a thing of the past concerning them. Instead look forward to Torment tides of Numenera and Pillars of Eternity. An for actual RPGS wait for Fallout 4 and the next Elder Scroll.
Bethesda stopped making "proper" RPGs after Morrowind. Like almost all AAA RPGs, Fallout and Skyrim are action games with diluted RPG mechanics. If you want "proper" RPGs you'll have to go Indie. I wish people would stop saying "BOO Bioware, you stopped making proper RPGs, how dare you! I will now spend my time playing The Witcher 2/The Witcher 3 or Skyrim instead."
On the bright side there's been many, many Indie RPGs released recently.
I am truly worried that DA:I spells the death of the CRPG.
Just because Bioware won't make any RPGs anymore doesn't mean that the genre is doomed. We have Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Divinity: Original Sin, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Blackguards, Lords of Xulima, Might and Magic X: Legacy, The Legend of Grimrock and so on. ![]()
That said, back SHADOWRUN: HONG KONG on Kickstarter! NAO!!! Like, right now! :3
Yes it is. It actually lets you roleplay, make moral choices, and create your very own character.
So does Tiger Woods Golf (apart from the moral choices bit.) And before you say something about it being an RPG hybrid, it isn't. It's a sim. They can also come with stats.
The thing about TW games is that while being in the same boat with other AAA RPGs in terms of combat mechanics (and actually being more of an aRPG than DA:I) is that it still offers more choice in terms of roleplaying and decision making, even though it's limited to a single protagonist. TW2 had two quite different playthroughs depending on your choice for instance, not counting lots and lots of minor choices. So at least they're good at this aspect of RPGs. DA is more and more about: you get these four dialogue options, but none of them matter and all have the same outcome anyway. But who knows, maybe TW3 will have the dialogue wheel too (shrugs).

As much as I hate the thought of never seeing another solid cRPG from BioWare, I agree.
While I enjoyed console port RPGs from BioWare such as KOTOR and the ME series, I wish they hadn't converted DA to action RPG with the PC as an afterthought.

Yeah, they had Jade empire as their action RPG.
Don't know how Dragon Age got picked for the 'Action' treatment.
Whilst Origins wasn't perfect, that was the platform to build off, somehow the platform get torn down and completely changed.

Moneymaking. Simple as that. That's also why all their games have multiplayer these days. Selling ingame items for real world money is a rather nice cashcow.

Actually this brings up an interesting point, look at the new sport games with own player and career. I will go on to say they have better stats, attributes, changes and rpg system than the so called AAA rpgs these days.
