I am currently doing a new run with a Qunari archer on nightmare difficulty. I've just commenced the new game and I am still in the Hinterland, on level 5.

Today, I encountered one of the rifts; and boy, these bloody spider-slender-men are downright nuisance. Our team are on the same level as these demons, yet they completely decimated my team, for Maker-knows-how-many-times! I've been utilizing the tactical camera to fight, yet the attempts were forlorn. Despite the fact that Cassandra managed to taunt them off, some they could neglect that and still kept pursuing my long-ranged squad mates. I don't know about you but their dig-dug-pop attack is undoubtedly one of the most annoying mechanics in the game. Likewise, its counterparts such as Envy Demon and Demon Commander on MP.

Any tips on counteracting their dig-dug-pop farce?

Anything that will knock them over works best. Shield bash, Bull Charge, Mighty Blow ... before they start doing their scream. Plus the longer you can chain that, the less often they will be porting around.

Just be glad it isn't bears.

You can cast leaping shot while being knocked down. So, the moment the demon pops out and you get knocked down, use leaping shot and your archer won't take any damage. Upgraded, you can turn the table and knock him down and finish him.

Freeze them, paralyze them, whatever CC you have on hand (except fear, obviously) will work on terrors. If you time it right, you can avoid their burrow attack entirely.

Once they're CC'd, kill them to death. They're very fragile. :D

(escape abilities like Evade and Fade Step also help)

Get Dispel on your mage if you want to make rift fights easier.

Terror demons are I think the most annoying enemy in the game on nightmare. Just wait til you get to the fallow mire. My only advice is to get the range characters at the edge of the rift but not out of range and have them stay there with your tank in the middle. If you have any crowd control abilities use those- if not try to get 2 mages with barrier in your party and have them spam that.

Otherwise- just avoid the rifts until you are a higher level? I've kind of avoided the rifts I have the most difficulty with for now just because I find them annoying, boring and repetitive anyway.
