Though technically necroing, this is a top google hit for me, and I feel that a good additional tip is to use Steam's inbuilt screenshot utility. You can use this even when the game is not normally a Steam game by going to the Steam library, clicking add game in the bottom left corner, and then running the game through steam. The default screenshot button then is F12. This will result in an easier to use format than the previously mentioned method.

If your on Steam HIT F12 if your on cd FRAPS is good, And FRAPS does work on steam games also :0) Happy Gaming All :0)

This is still an issue, F-11 doesn't take screens in ME1 or ME2.

In linux (Mint 14), it's easy. In ME1, I had a choice, F11 (the game's default) and in either ME1 or ME2, I could use PrntScrn, which created the screenshots in .png format at the resolution of my screen and put them in my "Pictures" directory. Since I launch the game through Steam, I could use F12, but that tends to make the game more 'flakey' because the Steam overlay is not as solid when emulated.
