I've seen a few videos where the player casts Barrier on the ground, like a trap, whith noone standing in it. I've tried it as well, but nothing happens. I thought it might trigger or something but no. I DO know that casting barrier on your party members encloses them, but I can't see the reason to cast it on the ground away from your party.

 

Also - the barrier upgrade: does it trigger when the barrier is destroyed by damage or does it have to expire "unharmed"?

If they cast it on the ground they missed.

 

If barrier expires (on anyone) for any reason, damage or time out, it reduces the cooldown.  IE cast it on you and Blackwall, and Blackwall gets punched in the face so hard his barrier expires, even if you have your barrier still active, the cooldown is reduced.

heh! Believe that these Players mistakenly thought barriers worked liked Glyphs. I know one that mentioned this humorously in their comment section.

The Barrier upgrade allows for shorter cooldowns. But one may cast a Barrier upon themselves before the first wears off, if that helps.
