It's not really the attack speed, imo - it's that staffs have the lowest damage in the game and mage damage is balanced around that.  A 69 damage staff can still do around 7,000 crit with Fire Mine + Chaotic Focus, in an AOE every 10-12 seconds.  The tonic is flat damage increase, so percentage-wise, it would be...a lot more.

In my personal experience, early game is the hardest part of Nightmare. After the trebuchet fight things will get easier.

My first run was with a mage, probably the hardest class for early game, especially if you sided with the mages. I'm using Sword and Shield warrior now, tanking for my team, early game's been pretty easy.

Easiest class to play nightmare with is definitely Rogue Tempest, though. Archer will make the early game easier but DW will give you a better damage output. Last night I was just messing around killing the last 3 dragons in Emprise du Lion using my mage, Sera, Solas and Cassandra. I used rift pull + double electric cage (upgraded, one from my mage and one from Solas) + thousand cuts with Sera, dropped the lvl 23 dragon to like 40% health. I was playing her as Archer, so I'm guessing a DW Tempest would make anything past skyhold super easy.

It depends on how you play.  If you love the tactical camera and micro-managing the whole fight you get a ton of mileage out of a DW Rogue; if you set up combos properly you can do obscene damage even before specializations and Tier3 schematics.

If you hate the tactical camera and just want to control your character and play the game like and ARPG the best bet is a Sword and Shield Warrior.  Keeping enemies taunted and the tank alive are the 2 most important functions in your party, and you don't want those responsibilities left solely in the hands of the AI.  Just make sure the rest of your party is ranged, do your job as tank and the party will work reasonably well.

I think these are the 2 best classed for Nightmare because they let you control the fight.  DW Rogue lets you control the fight by taking out threats quickly with careful planning, while a SnS Warrior lets you control it by keeping everyone else safe and buying the rest of your group enough safety and time to do their job.

It personally drives me nuts when party members waste their good abilities and take unnecessary damage, so I end up micromanaging the whole group through all but the simplest fights.  DW Rogue is what I went with.

From what I can tell, the game is easier when you have control of classes that don't operate as well using A.I.  For this reason, a S&S warrior can be put on auto pilot and work well.  A rogue can be a very effective class, but makes the most tactical choices of all the classes.  If you are controlling him/her, either as your own character or the NPC, your game will be much more successful.  Mages, the best thing to do with them is set them to use barrier and another good elemental spell, then turn the others off.  Keep your stamina reserve at 50% so you have something ready to go when you need it.

Some people slag the KE subclass of mage, but I loved it.  If you abuse the abilities, it can seem too easy, but for the most fun, just play the class according to the situation and you'll have a lot of fun.  Use casting when appropriate, and if you get mobbed, switch to melee.  Remember, the KE mage is the ONLY class in the game that allows for both ranged AND melee combat on the fly (unlike the rogue, which has both, but must be respecced, or at least have weapon swaps).  For this reason, I found it to be the most fun.

With the right build, the Archer can be a juggernaut as well (watch the videos of people soloing dragons with that class).  You're looking for lots of criticals and perks that reduce your cooldowns.  It's possible to have a build where you almost never have cooldown or stamina shortage.

Dagger rogues can grab Throwing Blades and Hidden Blades to have ranged options, and an archer can use Shadow Strike.

None of those have the low cooldown of Spirit Blade, but you definitely can play long and short range in the same fight. Very useful when fighting an enemy that can go berserk.

I've always been curious about this...does the animation use daggers as a weapon, or is it still the bow?

As far as I can tell, the rogue just uppercuts the foe with their mighty fist. If done from stealth, they wear a giant powerglove when they do it. :D

You can roll an assassin as their only flaw is the focus ability, a tank warrior and never control him to have more flexibility in party composition or knight enchanter to cheese the game.
