Howdy folks. I'm making a mod and I want to have animals available for characters to interact with. I've never had characters like this myself (except a PP DD druid who had speak with animals and animal friendship to create killer little spies--but that's impossible in NWN2 (I think (I'd actually like to do that in my mod))). So for those of you who are into this sort of thing, what in God's name do you do with them? Is it a conversation? Cheers, George.

Conversations, they are npcs like any other except you don't get lines of actual conversation unless you have some druid or ranger levels.

Pet the cat.

You can use them as spies if you can actually talk with them, you just need to script them running off and coming back later. In Crimmor, a mouse is a witness to a murder mystery you are tasked with solving, if you can talk with animals you can speak with the mouse and get some clues. In Path of Evil a deer will clue you in to some stuff left behind in an area by a traveler through the area, it turns out to be a bit of treasure (which is useless to the deer of course). If you can talk with they can be excellent resources because they can observe things without causing alarm in the observed. Baldur's Gate 2 had the chicken who swallowed a gemstone... Maybe you could convince some animals to help you fight some baddies. You could feed some guard dogs some meat to get past them.

Of course most animals aren't exactly smart either, you probably shouldn't make a deep discussion with a mouse unless it's really a polymorphed person or it's the philosophy of cheese. ;)

Yeah, basically any creature will talk to you as long as there's a conversation attached to it and it's not hostile.  Just do a check for feats or class levels if you only want druids or rangers to be able to talk to them.  I believe if you have a conversation whose only starting nodes require such checks, then if anyone else clicks on them, they'll behave the same as if they didn't have a conversation attached.

I see I've reached that part of the forums again.

Those are great plot items. Isn't there a player subset who wants to have their ranger (or whatever) do serious interactions with animals in order to get gratification out of a dungeon?

- i think it's a great idea for a specialized Druid/Ranger mod/campaign.

where the humanoid NPCs want to 'pave the earth' or otherwise pursue vainglory, and the animals become the really sincere characters.

(no irony intended but I'm sure there's plenty to go 'round )

! :mellow:_~

Totally! The mod could be called: "Animal Farm: The Reckoning" I just want an animal-petting/fondling dealeo to be one of many elements in my dungeon. I want something for everyone in my mod, also including opportunities for thieves. I don't want it to be specialized--merely inclusive.

I tend to offer 'Animal Empathy' conversation options to any party member who has the animal companion feat (druids, rangers, or clerics with the animal domain). I mostly use it for animal-based encounters on the overland map, although giving non-hostile domestic animals a secret conversation is an interesting idea. Anyone who doesn't have an animal companion might simply trigger an empty [End Dialog] barkstring, making it no different to any neutral creature that didn't have a conversation at all.

You mean until I test my mod? I sure hope not. I'm not stuck on anything. I haven't finished the first area yet. I like to go slow and methodical, like when I write a program.
