Is there any reliable place to farm great bear hides? I've found one in the Emerald Greaves but only once. I haven't explored much of the area yet though. Do the bears only spawn once in the same spots? I'm trying to farm them for mats because I like the color it adds to my armors. Is there any spot where they spawn consistently?

After you capture Suleidin Keep, there's a recurring war table mission called "gather leather".  If you use Leliana, she'll return with 6 great bear hides each time.

In my experience great bears will always spawn at the worst possible time, and proceed to kill your entire party and everyone else in the local area.

Emerald Graves and the Orlesian Lion area are my top spots for gathering these pelts.

I think the keep is still a bit head for me but not sure. Is there a specific area in Emerald Greaves where it's known to spawn?

They're pretty much everywhere in there but especially around the ruin area that belongs to the giants. At least in my game.

Well the keep is in Emprise du Lion.  So if you can do the graves, you can do the keep.  Plus, it has the funniest boss in the game.

 

P.S.

Please tell me you aren't farming Great Bear hides to give to the Dalish.  No ones favor is worth that much.

You can't find them because you're looking for them. Stop looking for them and just go about your business. You'll be attacked by a couple of them soon enough. The moment you forget about them and let your guard down.

I've had a fairly hard time finding them in both of my pkaythroughs too.  Came across one almost as soon as I started exploring EG the first time and thought that they'd be common.  I personally only see them in the Southern half of the area, but haven't found one spot where they usually are.  Personally looking for hides to make armor.

Right along the creek bordering the south (lower level) and the north (Higher level, dragon, and Giants)

Re: Emprise du Lion - There is at least one that can be found near the iced lake to the North. And I met several in the wooded areas between encampments while looking for imprisoned slaves. Also found many packs of wolves, so be prepared for co-op canine/ bruin assaults.

I came out of the Sister Costeau boss fight, only to run into a Great Bear at the entrance. Luckily, Vivienne is a Knight Enchanter.
