Well as expected it's a nightmare. I am a low level Mage right now but please tell me it gets a little easier because right now...woof. I've heard that the early on in nightmare with a Mage is rough.

The game becomes much easier as your understanding of its mechanics grows. Use your party members in combat to gain understanding of their classes, watch the enemies and learn their patterns, and ensure you are crafting the highest tier gear available to you.

The hardest fight  in the game is (for me at least) the Haven one at the trebuchet. After you level a bit, get to Skyhold and unlock specializations there is a significant decrease in difficulty.

There's only lol mode for me, I've made a mistake picking Knight Enchanter for my Mage.

But anyway, early on, it might be a bit difficult, but that's what makes this limited game so intersting. You just need to have a bit of every CC at the start, although I've personally went heavy on fire for damage and panic, and I've kept adding/respecing frost/lightning as needed to stun/freeze panic immune targets. In a hindsights, I should've gone all out ice for survivability and basic powers for damage.

But yeah, anyway, it gets retardedly easy once you get profession, so long as it isn't necro. So cherish the hardship while it lasts, that's the most interesting part of the game by far.

opening several areas of forbidden oasis seems important because there you find paragons luster, a tier 2 metal for your staff. You get the schematic in Val Royeaux. The paragon luster is also used in your team's gear. Tier 2 leather is from bears (oh my), Accomplishing just the gear will give you several levels tho

disabling your spells will ensure you have the right spells on cool down, but then you wont have any auto play

I don't know about other people but I add the third potion slot first and throw fire into rift corners, bees are more deadly but who can fault a conflagration

It gets WAY easier after you unlock the specialization. This is even more obvious with mages, if you pick the Knight Enchanter.

As the rest have said, once you get Skyhold it gets easier cuz you get the Knight Enchanter specialization and you get access to Emprise du Lion, and Hissing Wastes which you can farm T3 schematics.

I'm currently doing a nightmare PT and since I've gotten the Knight Enchanter specialization and sum T3 schematics (with T3 materials) it is a breeze, I actually had to pause a few times and check to see if it was still on nightmare.

But I'll admit, FF is off and I've kinda been exploiting some glitches (duping mostly) :\

The first 10 levels on nightmare was harsh and discouraging but hang in there, get knight enchanter, and use T3 schematics and materials as much as possible. Its doable.

Playing as a [rift] mage on nightmare was easier than a [tempest] archer on normal. It is just a grind if you do not atleast have one mage in your party that does not have dispel. Barrier.. I have not needed it once. Dispel is needed because of the mobs with 50,000 health and 150,000 barrier. (NOTE: Numbers are an exaggeration)

I've solo'd the game with a mage on nightmare and it was quite difficult pre-specializations. The main way I did it was to lean hard on Wall of Fire+Immolate+Energy Barrage+Static Cage. Wall of Fire makes any melee enemy (minus terror demons and rogues) trivial, Mages you can beat by just avoiding their attacks. Archers are the hardest, so you have to use the terrain and wall of fire. Abusing the engage range of AI's helps too.

for a mage you can cheese the haven fight.

even SOLO

make sure to have wall of ice and another mage with wall of ice.

keep putting up barriers and walls of ice as you turn the trebuchet

I actually brought solas dorian and vivienne for this

all with barrier hold postion and wall of ice + ice armor

i cheesed it :3

on solo knightmare it's alot trickier but can be cheesed with ice wall + ice armor + regen potions

Ice armor unnecessary, you can do the haven fight solo without taking damage. Ice wall is useful but also not mandatory, the only thing you need is fire wall and energy barrage with a good ice staff for the boss.

I had a tough time in the early going as a mage, but after getting specialization, it's much easier.  Knowing how to use the classes is important.  Rogue archers need to be "babysat" a fair bit, because they make absurd tactical decisions (like shooting at armored tanks from 3 feet away).  Crowd control is very important, so do as the others suggested and have a couple of mages.  Walls of Ice and Fire can work wonders.
