Are helmets a wasted opportunity or hopeless?

I find in RPGs I mostly prefer to play where helmets are off all the time.  I like that feature in DAI where you can make them invisible.  IMO in RPGs I've played, most helmets are distracting and many just silly looking, with DAI being no exception.  There may be a couple in a game that find tolerable or perhaps for funniness value.  My read on the DAI helmets is that BioWare gave up early, didn't put in a lot of effort on that and focused on other things.  Not sure that was a bad move.  But I have to wonder if it is possible in an RPG to have helmets that are aesthetically appealing, and not so distracting that you want your PC/NPCs to wear them all the time.  Or is it a hopeless cause, effectively relegated to a "free slot" for some extra armor and effects?

The helms in DAI are mostly brutal especially on rogues and mages. I always set them to off, everything just looks better and not like a graphical glitchy mess.

The problem Bioware has with some of the helms they created is that they don't always cover the full head, so they have to accomodate every hair style, and they simply cannot... so they were poorly designed. They should have in a clever way only included helms that covered up all hair and made them all look actually good.

But... REALISM!

Now that I got that out of my system... I doubt it. Helmets by their very nature need to cover a large part of your character's head. They can doubtlessly be made aesthetically pleasing, but would you really want your character to wear them all the time?

I personally curse any game that doesn't have a helmet toggle. How many games have I played that actually had a helmet slot, but that I deliberately left empty, taking the stat hit (... or crit immunity >.>) in stride, just so my character would be able to show off her gorgeous hair. Which is not really a problem in DA:I any more because there simply is no gorgeous hair...

I still would like magic-imbued diadems etc. -- they seemed to work well enough for Meredith and Flemeth, so why can't we have any?

I kept helmets off till I got the helm of the Inquisitor. Which immediately turned me into a supervillain. Solas is now the Charles to my Magneto.

The helm does not even fit properly its like 10 sizes too big. Bioware sucks at head gear, or people forget mage head things in origins.

If only the helmet actually showed in cinematics/conversations....

Y'know, just like in the trailers.

Well, I just got a idea : Would you find it fine if your characters doesn't wear the helmet during exploration and had the animation where he put the helmet on his head at the beginning of the battle, at the same time he draw out his/her weapon. During exploration time, the helmet will stay at the belt.

After all, real life warriors during troubled times doesn't wear the helmets all the time and only put it to fight!

Just think about it : you see a group of enemies. "Time to fight!" Everybody put the helmets on, draw their weapons and run at the enemies. Huuum. Lovely.

Helms in most games are horrible. Worst helm Ive ever seen though was one that looked like a flower pot with a flower in it in Lord of the Rings Online. My friend had a dwarf in that game (all dwarfs in LoTR look male) and that helm and her armor transmogged into a red dress. Was quit stunning.

My Femquisitor uses her unhelmeted hair as a means of psychological warfare.

There are several helmets which were a miss but there are also several pieces of headgear that I thought looked fine. Sometimes it's just a matter of them not fitting the kind of style I'm going for with my Inquisitor. The simple battlemage cowl was my favourite though, because a hood just works with pretty much everything. Like others I'm also a bit narked that there was no option to have them remain on during conversations.

I understanded the meaning of psychological warfare when my unhelmed femshepard buttheaded a Krogan in ME2...

Even with its sizing problems, the Inquisitor's Helm looks pretty striking.  I do think that the Helm should provide more coverage for the back of the skull instead of stopping halfway down the head in favor of chainmail.  As it is, the back of the Helm reminds me of a WWI-era infantry helmet:

when I think I would have preferred something more like Alan Lee's rendition of The Dragon Helm of Dor-lomin, from The Silmarillion, which they probably used as inspiration anyway:

I'm also a little disappointed that there aren't more hood options.  There's an Inquisitor's Hat (classified as mage gear) and the Inquisitor's Helm (classified as warrior gear), but no Inquisitor's Cowl / Hood.  I know all classes can wear the "Inquisitor"-themed headgear, but it seems like the rogues were forgotten.  I'd take a reskin of Leliana's hood, or the blue hoods worn by some of the Grey Wardens.  Hell, even the Avaar warriors in the Fallow Mire had some nice-looking hoods with fur lining, I think.  I'd love the option to wear one of those.

Also, I miss the hell out of the Thane's Helmet from Origins.

Save for Vivenne's helmets, I don't care for any of them. A lot of them just look awkward.

I usually switch Viv between her default helmet and a mage cowl.  She looks deadly in the Warden mage gear and a hood.

I think it's just a question of preference. BioWare gave people the option, which I think is the right call.

But... REALISM!

I'm sure you say that without much sarcasm, but one has to wonder, did people who used helmets wear them constantly? Swords are sheathed, shields are packed, heavy armor was only used before battle... etc.

I don't see it as realistic at all, running around in full armor and even less realistic doing it with a helmet on. Logically one would don the helmet before combat, and remove it after combat.

But RPGs generally and Bioware specifically are terrible at making things feel authentic in the swords and sorcery universe. They do much better with that in scienece fiction. But I digress.

A helmet toggle makes sense. For realism ;)

I was looking forward to having complete armor sets.

Seeing how helmets were worn in DA3 broke immersion.

The elves' ears stick through solid helmets not meant for ear protrusion.

This turned me away from using them.

You realize you're asking this of the same company that doesn't do weapon sheaths, right? God I got so spoiled in Skyrim because of those. I used lower tier swords just because I liked the way the sheath looked. Gah, so frustrating.

I would like to see circlets added as opposed to the bulky heavy helmets.  A circlet can be worn bu all classes and leaves the face open as well as most of the head.  They can be customized to improve certain skills like adding certain gemstones can increase efficacy of certain magic attacks or certain metals can increase armor rating and overall defense.

The hair sucks so bad that I would rather wear the helmets.  Couldn't find a decent tier 3 schematic for a heavy helm, though

I have a thing for full face masks, so was not amused that bioware saw fit to provide orlesian battlemages with that awesome Dr Doom-esque hooded mask from DA2, but only allowed me to wear the robe. The next best thing, the Free Marches helmet, was also a lost cause because they decided not to give me a schematic to build a proper version with (cheers guys).

The Warden helmet looks great, but basically demands I wear Warden Heavy Armour on my Mage. Ok, that's cool I can work with that.... Until I find the only material I can use is in an area with minimum recommended level of 16.

Seriously, bioware, will someone *please* think of the helmets!
