To upload your Mass effect 1 save game files, use the game luancher before heading into the game, There is a configure option button, Click this. (For steam users right click mass effect in the game panel, and click Mass effect luancher)
After you have the configure panel open, on the left options buttons go to "save games" button.
Press copy Mass effect 1 Save games.

This works for steam and retail copies
My Documents ---> Bioware ---> Mass effect ----> Save.
click save folder and your done

Extended guide if your still lost.

You are given a Browser folder, from here navigate to
My documents expand this folder, Find bioware expand again and just double click on the save folder.
There is no indication that anything has happened but save the settings as you exit.
Start up the game and your imports are there.

If you do not have ME2 at STEAM. How should I do then?

I have looked into the Confiq - save games and then I get to choose which folder. I have tried the whole ME2 folder but it did´nt work. I have even looked at any savegame folder but I do not see any.

You need to tell the launcher where your ME1 savegames are located so it can import the data.  It doesn't need to know where the ME2 folders are.  When you choose the folder just give it the filepath for your ME1 savegames and it should work for you.

Whenever I do that the launcher crashes so  i just end up moving the files manually.

New Question. I have just re-installed Mass Effect 2, i kept my save files from when i finished ME2 last time and want to replay them from the start with all the gear i unlocked. But i don't know how i can do that, what folders do i need and where for my completed ME2 saves to reuse them. Don't want to have to finish it all over again to just find this out :D

Dark_Ninja: I know that your post is 7 months old, but anyhow. Just copy your save file to the bioware folder in "my documents". If you copied the whole folder where the save folder is it should work; I just did it my self :)

What if I haven't got ME1 installed, only ME2? I've downloaded ME1 save files after I played through ME2 four times, so I could feel the difference. I downloaded a variety of saves from masseffectsaves.com (http://www.masseffectsaves.com/). I've saved them in the \\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save\\ME folder, and used that directory link when choosing save files in "configure" from the load menu, but it still doesn't work. What do I do?
