I didn't buy SWTOR, I just watched the stories on youtube. The MMO scene isn't for me.

MMO's are the worst piece of s-h-i-t that has ever struck the rpg industry. Once a franchise goes MMO, it dies a sudden death with no hint of salvation.

I don't think anybody with a job and life responsibilities likes to play MMO's against a bunch of kids armed with daddy's credit card and all kinds of time to power level all day.

I also don't think it makes much sense to compare DA games to MMO's.  All of the DA games share some gameplay traits with MMO's common to their time of release.  So it renders meaningful debates on gameplay differences difficult to comprehend.

Though I do miss the co op style multiplayer from NWN 1.  That was awesome.

I have a job and life responsibilities and I love MMO's.  (Well, some of them)  You're right, though, I don't like to play with spoiled kids shouting "lern2play newb!!111".  This is why I solo through MMO's or join a guild full of mature adults.  More relaxing, less taxing.

I don't understand why the gaming industry has gone so ass backwards as far as innovation through out the years. All most c rpg players have ever wanted is a way to play coop the way baldurs gate had it with a bud so that they can explore and play with a friend or 2. A couple of relatives recently bought da I so that we could play mp coop and the first question that they asked is if we could all do the campaign together. To which I replied no that was only a feature in old games all of our new technology won't allow that.

Imagine how much better a game like skyrim would be with a bud.

The wow guild Im in consists of goofy adults, probably wouldn't be playing the game atm if it wasn't for all the laughs .

Anyhow, I would not approve of a DA mmo, for a game series where story is the focus that would be a terrible idea. Tweak the current direction we have with Inquisition and we'll have a glorious future for the franchise :)

Well put! That is exactly why I'm a bit dubious of a Dragon Age MMO.

I hope they go bankrupt.  I hope they get sued for every last cent they have for false advertising and instead of giving us what was promised in DAI, they gave a shitty single player MMO beta.  They can shove their mmo idea and the 10,000 fetch quests and shove it up their corn hole.

I would be rather disappointed if the next game were an MMORPG, as I am whenever I discover that an interesting-sounding premise for a game turns out to be a MMORPG.

The problem I have with MMORPGs is twofold, and neither one is easily surmountable: first, that almost any plot whatsoever that you put forth will instantly become strange when you have hundreds or thousands of characters running through it at differing stages at any given time (but you can't exactly have the game just end, because that's bad for new players); second, that nobody actually bothers to roleplay in them, thus, why even bother with having it be an RPG at all.

I'm not particularly fond of most MMORPG gameplay conventions either, but that bothers me far less than the above two complaints. I can deal with poor gameplay in an RPG and still enjoy it. I can't deal with a complete disconnect about the plot versus the number of people running around, or a bunch of characters running around shouting random out-of-character stuff with names that aren't even trying to make sense in-world.

I guess it depends.   However, it would likely not do terribly well.   I will use the Elder Scrolls as a perfect example.   I played Arena for 6 months straight, I played Daggerfall for 2 years straight, Morrowind for 2 years straight, Oblivion for a month, Skyrim has 1200 hours logged.

I played ESO for about 2 months and left kind of disgusted with it.   So much so that I won't likely return even when they add new content.

A great single-player franchise doesn't necessarily translate well to a multiplayer media.   MMOs also get hamstrung by the fact that now people have to deal with annoying people all the time too.   Between the gold sellers and the spawn farmers, it makes the game more of a time-killing exercise rather than an immersive RPG environment.   People like MMOs to socialize with their friends rather than going to them because they are good games.

You mean what the devs described as Kotor 3 to 12?

I don't see the point, Bioware already has an MMO and Dragon Age isn't popular enough to deserve an MMO. They'd have a much better chance with a Mass Effect MMO.

EA wants their own WoW, they have been trying desperately for years. The will keep at it until they get it.

No, look, look...I'm fine they failed on it being THAT great, but ok...they failed, it was bad, but okay...but...they kept going on about 5 pillars (regular stuff + story)...about story mattering...personal, class stories..and then class stories were abandoned and only regular end game content got developed in expansions, no more class stories and chapters..

If you go "I'll do what most mmos  do + story" and then "ooops, no more story" then why should I stay?

I left.

Disappointed. I had hopes for swtor.

NO!

I really dislike MMO's.

But especially when it comes to RPG's it is singleplayer all the way for me.

And it would most certainly kill the franchise for good!

I agree! I love DA but if they went the MMO route then I would not buy the game, MMOs are just not my thing at all.

Don't be shy, tell us how you really feel!

I started playing The Realm in 1995 because I wanted to immerse myself in a fantasy world that had other living people in it.  From there I went to UO and then DAoC.  I really hated the competitiveness of DAoC, but I really loved the lore and the world they had crafted for it.

Then came WoW, and for the first year or so I really loved it because, again, the world was so finely crafted.  Then I realized that the lore was LORELOL and the game was about nothing but raiding, loot, gear, perfect spec... and ugh, that was it for me.

LOTRO is the only MMO I play now, because it brings me back to the first reason I started playing MMOs -- the world, the lore, the nice people living in it.  And LOTRO has the best, most mature community ever.  I'll be sad when they shut it down, but I'll be there until the last light bulb goes out.

Dragon Age's lore simply does not have the chops to be an immersive MMO.  If they turned it into another loot, gear, epeen grind that would break my heart.

Dragon Age MMO? Yes, please!

I will make a fortune by writing about this legendarily dreadful brand management.

You are correct - I should have said "Dragon Age Inquisition is a single player element which happens to share all the worst issues of MMO games" (for example, massive areas filled with "kill 20 damage sponge bears" copy pasted quests or crafting recipes that will require hours of farming respawning enemies since MMOs are basically an exercise in stalling the player because the developer gets money for every month the player hasn't finished the game yet)

I figured that my phrasing was shorter, and instead ended up making a statement which could be construed to be technically incorrect.

I will be so damn pissed if Dragon Age turns into an mmo.

If a separate team makes an MMO but they still make single player games to advance the plot I'll be fine. In fact I'd enjoy trying it out. But keep it separate from advancing the plot of the core series.

I can't begin to describe how pissed off I was that KOTOR ended up as an MMO.  The second game screamed for a sequel yet they forced us to continue the story at 15 bucks a month?  Hell no.

In theory I wouldn't be against the idea, but MMOs have such a woeful success rate and Bioware has negligible experience in running them that I wouldn't be confident that they could create a sustainable MMO product (or that there is a big enough audience to justify it; DA doesn't have anywhere near the profile of TES).

Besides which, I think the era of the MMO is passing into history, as player tastes move away from time sink games like MMOs to less time consuming games like MOBAs and other forms of competitive multiplayer. Recent AAA MMO launches have include ArcheAge, ESO, and Wildstar, and they have all pretty much flopped; even the mighty WoW is starting to seriously creak with age. The only ones (other than WoW) that seem to be doing okay financially are the ones that were free to play from the outset or are buy to play (like GW2). I honestly don't know why anyone would pour millions of dollars into developing an MMO at this stage, you might as well just open a window and shovel your money out of it.

Yeah, you are absolutely correct!

But publishers do not care about reality anymore when it comes to "theoretical income"!

They all get an enormous - monsterous really - boner just from the thought that consumers might be willing to treat a VG like a $5 slot-machine for the rest of their natural lifes  If you put that thought alone in the head of a publisher he or she will not be able to think straight anymore for at least a couple of month or even years !!!

These concepts of "VG-addicts who love to throw their hard earned cash out of the window for trash-content and commit to one franchise religiously" stick in the brains of publishers like industrial grade power-glue in the pelt of a donkey ...

These people really HATE when they have to WORK for their money! They all studied economics to get rich fast! Not to work for their income ...

And since this kind of is what I honestly believe, I also believe that we will have to suffer these stupid concepts ...

(like F2P >>> pay tripple and centuple to get to play woeful and repetitive game-content)

... trying to invade perfectly healthy and perfectly solid franchises and game-conepts in the foreseeable future.

As sad as that is.

What publishers really want is this:

Charge 100 dollars for a pre-order, make a monthly subscription fee mandatory (for the game they sold heavily overpriced and riddled with bugs to us already), produce DLC's instead of patches and on top of that include infinite pay-to-win options and infinite pay-to-progress-further options for people who like a "premium-experience"! THAT is what they really want. All they need now are really rich clients who are easily turned into addicts!

You are SOOOOO right ... <3 <3 <3 ... They are designed to make money and nothing else!

These games have absolutely nothing to do with the mere concept of RPG's

Not because they can not pull it of - but because they are not ment to, these days!

They are just too lucrative to focus on anything else than revenue! They attract too many casual gamers to resist the temptation to turn them into a money-trap. It is very sad for every honest gamer who just loves to play MMO's with his or her friends. But the MMO-market is too lucrative for any other developements. F2P-microtransactions and subscription-fees are exactly what some devs and publishers are thinking about first - when designing the very concept of their titles - everything else is just "tagged-on", afterwards!

The exception proves the rule, here!

It's a "present" straight from hell to f*uck with AAA-game-players and RPG-fans in general. We have to vote with our wallets. And anybody who does not make this a habbit will have to face the consequences of his or her reckless behavior. Suit yourself, my dear gamers!

Why would EA try to reenter that tough market instead of just riding out SW:TOR? It seems like a lot of risk when they've turned around the company by investing in other areas that have been quite lucrative for them.
