Does that mean that people will come at me with pitchforks and fiery sticks? I chose him over Iron Bull and Sera. Iron Bull is always getting low health (and he only uses potions to regenerate) and Sera seems to love getting up close with a bow. Varric has the most fun abilities - imagine rigging Elemental Mines with confetti - and he also manages to stay out of melee range with Stealth. Plus, seeing a dwarf use Leaping Shot is amazing. Also, I like to think of Bianca as a shotgun.

Varric: You guys are getting a little too close to me. Bianca won't like that.

****** Mook: Who is Bianca

Varric: SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND

*leaping shot*

also if elemental mines had the option to cost no stamina and just shot confetti

ID STILL USE THEM

they must also include the various party noises like the party horns

hell if elemental mines did the viva pinata YAY if someone stpped on them ID ****** USE THEM AS **** ALL THE TIME

THROW EVERYTHING

Now I made Sera the most overpowered bow and I feel like a I should play with here. So I am, and it's effective, but not as fun as Varric...

No pitchforks here. I bring Varric everywhere. Hey, he's badass enough. And I like him.

Same here, he's awesome. I like the squad-wide buffs too.

His banter with Cassandra is hilarious.

Varric: 'I spy with my little eye...'
Cass: 'NO'
Varric: 'oh come on, you don't even know what I was-'
Cass: 'NO'

:)

Varric is my favorite companion so far in Dragon Age. I bring him everywhere. Even on playthroughts where I'm trying to bring some of the companions I don't normally bring with me much, I end up bringing Varric with me more often than not. Varric is awesome!

Same, Varric  all the way as I don't like Sera or cole. He doesn't need a romance either, he has Bianca....sounds kinky and painful I know but there you go.

There was a scene from Scarface that was parodied by Varric in DA2 (The scene where he enters his brother's estate)

Varric is THE most popular companion in both DA2 and DA:I. Why would you think people would come at you with pitchforks? Now, if you said you liked using Tallis (DA2) or Vivienne, people might start a lynch mob.

Contrary to what others may have one believe, Varric is still a monster in a fight if you know how to make use of him.

For me as part of a crit focused party with Bull and Solas, bringing Varric was the equivalent of bringing a machine gun to a sword fight.

Varric is which me everywhere I go... partially because he's my favorite character and partially because I wish I was romancing him and not Sera xD I bring it up maybe a little too often in my Let's Play. And I agree, watching a dwarf use Leaping Shot is kind of amazing.

I like having Varric around, because he usually says what I'm thinking, and he'd be someone I'd hang out with in RL. I like pairing him with Cassandra of course, because Cassandra is a beast and their banter is pretty funny.

As long as you upgrade Bianca as often as you get a chance, and make sure he has good Stealth stuff in there (with Poison weapons), he's good to go anywhere and won't die unless you bite off way more than you can chew. He outlasts Cassandra in those situations believe it or not. Not by much but still.

I love using Varric. In DA2 he went everywhere because he was Hawke's best bro. In DA:I he's still coming almost everywhere BECAUSE HE'S MY BEST BRO, TOO, OKAY ;) But no seriously, he's just a great character, I love having him around, and the first time I saw him use Leaping Shot I knew I couldn't go back.

From my experience, Varric is very good vs Dragons, spamming his Leaping Shot with his Artificer passives. When added Hidden Blades, he is a DPS machine vs big targets, especially when using his cloning focus ability.

I love Varric! Whenever I take a rogue with me, it's Varric. I just love how he interacts with other party members (especially Solas)

I always feel like such a hipster for actually liking these characters. Hell, Viv's my favourite character in the entire series.

Recently, on my tank character, I switched back from Cole to Varric. The party now consists of Varric, Vivienne, and somehow, Cassandra. Cassandra is on there because I was testing out her Sulevin Blade and Templar abilities for my Lincoln-Templar character. Turns out she's op. Anyways, gave Varric some Legion of the Dead Heavy Armor, and gave it a silver, gold and yellow finish.

It comes to me that my party members are always Cassandra, Vivienne, and someone random. Hopefully, Solas can replace Vivienne, despite my love for the character. So now it seems that I will be back to the original party members.

Poop.

Oh, and by the way, should I pick Fallback Plan or Elemental Mines for Varric? The FP's teleport is really useful, but EM gives me some crowd bombardiering... that how you say it?

I would say out of those two, might as well get the mines. Leaping shot is probably better for groups anyways (or use a mage) but I find that Fallback Plan might be better for dual wield rogues, as they are more likely to get hurt often enough to find it useful.

For Varric, I actually prefer using him as DW since it puts him up close, which is where he needs to be for maximal DPS from his traps. Also, my ability to consistently find good Bianca upgrades is at odds with finding daggers in everything, and dropped by everyone. Its like this game is raining purple daggers T.T  ... Here's my build:

Rogue - Double Daggers

Set his Stamina threshold high (90%) so that he gets the most out of elemental mines when he uses them. Aside from that the benefit of this build is increased survivability by having him fading in/out of combat and setting up combos/running interference with knockout powder.

Varric is a badass for sure, but Vivienne can solo almost the entire game on nightmare by starting with this build:

Mage - Knight Enchanter

Frost step into combat, swing the blade 3x, decloaking blast, swing 3x and you'll be able to frost step again. Since she'll gain barrier with DPS, and be too maneuverable to effectively hit, she's almost invincible... The AI will not do this for you though :P

For barrier and general support, Vivienne is still the best, IMO. Most of a barrier's presence is lost to attrition. Since she is the only mage with access to the 35% slower barrier decay, she provides the strongest barriers. Additionally, since most barrier batteries end up targeting away from them they're rather squishy. Since she can generate barrier w/ her DPS she has much greater sirvivability than the others.

Disable any offensive spells but static cage and she'll drop the cage, cast barrier, then she'll keep attacking and hastening her barrier cooldown while keeping a healthy reserve of mana for any instance that she needs to rez, or whenever barrier comes off cooldown. Will gimp her slightly offensively, but you'll have a really consistent barrier presence, occasional paralysis effects and a reliable rez.

You could run with Solas and focus on his rift spells (weakening combos ftw :D ), have Varric throwing bombs and putting people to sleep, and Vivienne for barriers and paralysis effects, you'd have a very solid base to be a 2handed warrior using whirlwind for AoE combo detonation ;)

I'm the archer in my party, so I don't bring any other rogues with me..... Vivienne and Dorian are my crutch members, both have a good balance between support and offense. As for my last party member, I use Blackwall because I need a tank (I previously used Cassandra, but she became Divine and stole my gear >.>). Blackwall is near invincible, which just makes him perfect for the role.
